    A study on few biochemical parameters of clinically suspected and laboratory confirmed Leptospirosis cases

    A study on biochemical parameters in clinically suspected and laboratory- confirmed leptospirosis cases was conducted in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Out of 50 clinically suspected samples of leptospirosis, 38% were positive from both ELISA IgM and rapid card test. In the present study, liver markers such as bilirubin, Serum Glutamate Oxalo acetic Transaminase (SGOT) and Serum Glutamate Pyruvic Transaminase (SGPT) encountered elevation 68%, 100% and 89% respectively in leptospiosis positive patent while 89% and 48 %of positive patients showed elevation in kidney marker, creatinine and blood urea. On the basis of liver and renal functions, a hospital can develop its own clinical algorithm to suspect the case of leptospirosis

    A study on dog bite incidence in Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli, India

    The injuries caused by dog bites have grown to such epidemic proportions that they are now considered a major public health concern. The epidemiology of dog bites in the UT of Dadra & Nagar Haveli has been evaluated, for the year 2012. This assessment included victims age, sex, biting site and season of the year. During the study, a total of 938 dog bites, were reported from aforesaid place. Of all the dog bites reported, 39.6% victim belonged to age group upto 0-15 year (children) and 60.4% were more than 15 years old (adults). The majority of the incidents 40.8% occurred during the pre monsoon period (1-20 weeks). There was no case of rabies. There is a need to educate the public about the magnitude of dog-bite problems, enforce leash laws and impound stray dogs as an integral part of prevention programs

    We calculate the temperature dependence of the weak localization correction in a two dimensional system at arbitrary relation between temperature, TT and the elastic mean free time. We describe the crossover in the dephasing time τϕ(T){\tau_\phi(T)} between the high temperature, 1/τϕT2lnT1/\tau_\phi \simeq T^2 \ln T, and the low temperature 1/τϕT1/\tau_\phi \simeq T behaviors. The prefactors in these dependences are not universal, but are determined by the Fermi liquid constant characterising the spin exchange interaction.Comment: 4 pages, to appear in PRB, minor errors corrected, added reference

    Ayurveda is a Science and art of appropriate living which helps to achieve longevity. Panchakarma present a unique approach of Ayurveda to therapy with specially designed five procedures of internal purification of the body. One of the Panchakarma, the Nasyakarma is considered the best and the most specific procedure for disease of Urdhvajatrugatarogas like Pratishyay, Shirahshoola etc. It is also useful in other systemic diseases like Ardita, Kampavata. According to Ayurveda, the nose is the gate way to Shirah. So, systemically performed Nasyakarma cures almost all the diseases of Urdhvajatrugata rogas. Other procedures of Panchakarma are also very effective in numerous diseases according to condition but Nasya Karma is very easy to perform and there are no many strict regimens to follow during Nasya Karma but it will give effectual results in loads of diseases due to direct contact with nerve terminals by the nasal mucosa. So, it is demand of time to know about Nasyakarma and its importance. In this direction, to evaluate the actual efficacy of different Ayurveda treatment modalities; few works on Nasya Karma are compiled here. In current attempt, it has been planned to review as such works done on Nasyakarma. By this Present study it can be stated that in various diseases Nasya Karma is found to be significantly effective. It proved to be a better therapy as compared to only oral drug because it provides affect for longer duration than oral drug

    Role of glipizide therapy on oxidative stress parameters in the patient with Type-II diabetes mellitus

    Background: Oxidative stress has an important role in the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus (DM) Type-II. Oxidative stress has an important role in the progression of DM Type-II and its related complications such as retinopathy, neuropathy and many others. The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of glipizide therapy on oxidative stress parameters in Type-II DM.Methods: Thirty newly diagnosed diabetes patients were given glipizide therapy on 1st day and continue for 3 months. 30 non-diabetic healthy volunteers served as a control. Plasma malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase levels were measured at the time of enrollment and at the end of 3 months of glipizide treatment.Result: Theresults are analyzed using paired t-test. Plasma MDA was significantly increased, whereas SOD and catalase were significantly reduced in newly diagnosed diabetic patients as compared to control. After 3 months of glipizide therapy, plasma MDA was significantly reduced, whereas SOD and catalase were significantly increased.Conclusion: Glipizide therapy significantly reduced oxidative free radicals and increased antioxidant mechanism, which reduced oxidative stress, progression DM-II and its related complication

    Effect of atenolol on hemoglobin level in mild to moderate hypertension

    Background: Hypertension is the most common cardiovascular disease and a major cardiovascular risk factor that causes significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Most common type is primary (essential) hypertension and is genetically determined. It affects many systems of the body and can also alter various hematological parameters. The study was undertaken to check the effect of atenolol on hemoglobin (Hb) level in mild to moderate hypertension.Methods: The study was prospective and non-randomized. Thirty newly diagnosed hypertensives selected for atenolol therapy by medicine personnel were enrolled in the study based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients were divided into pre-treatment (before starting atenolol therapy) and post-treatment group. Red blood cell (RBC) count, Hb, packed cell volume (PCV) and red cell indices were measured at the time of enrolment and then monthly after starting atenolol for next 3 months.Result: Results were analyzed by repeated measure analysis of variance. Atenolol treatment was found to increase Hb and PCV significantly, whereas no significant change in RBC count and red cell indices.Conclusions: Treatment with atenolol for mild to moderate hypertension has shown a significant increase in Hb and PCV level. This positive effect may be because of the decrease in sodium and water reabsorption by decrease in sympathetic overactivity and excretion of sodium and water by improvement in kidney functions. Atenolol has no any direct effect on Hb synthesis and erythropoiesis

    Pantoea: A Versatile bacterial Candidate of Agricultural Importance

    Genus Pantoea is a diverse group of the family Enterobacteriaceae which inhabit various ecological niches. Various species of Pantoea are found associated with a diverse host range that include plants, animals, insects and humans. Besides this Pantoea spp. has been widely distributed in nature including water, soil, dairy products, meat and fish. It is commonly associated with plants as epiphyte or pathogen. Pantoea was first recognized as a genus about 25 years ago, but since then, approximately 20 species with a wide range of characteristics have been discovered. Identification of plant-pathogenic Pantoea species is difficult, due to the high degree of phenotypic similarity between species of this genus and related Enterobacteriaceae. Pantoea species are typically characterized based on colony morphology, physiological and biochemical tests, and in some cases, fatty acid analysis or quinone composition. These have a wide range of plant hosts where they live as nonpathogenic endophytes as well as epiphytes that colonize the leaves, stems and roots. In this perspective, some Pantoea strains can be beneficial to the plant host by providing growth promoting substances such as the plant-growth hormone indole-acetic acid (IAA), phosphate solubilization or nitrogen fixation. Number of Pantoea species are also involved in bioremediation of various pesticides and organic chemical compounds. This indicates the potential to degrade some recalcitrant and xenobiotic compounds. Some Pantoea strains also provide effective protection to plants against various bacterial and fungal diseases and post-harvest fruit rots. On the other hand, some of the species are recognized as a human pathogen and has led to controversy as limited documented cases of P. agglomerans bacteremia and infections have been reported. Most of the cases reported among immunocompromised patients or the pediatric population. Thus, Pantoea is a multifaceted bacterium that plays a significant role in agriculture as a plant growth promoter by producing hormone like IAA, inorganic pollutant degradation by producing potent enzymes and also protects some plants against pathogens by producing antibacterial and antifungal compounds. In some cases, these also cause diseases in human beings. Therefore, this genus is very important for studies. In this review, the industrial, agricultural as well as ecological significance of the genus Pantoea is emphasized
