World-view, the hope for a success, and social competencies in adolescents training the sport dance The aim of this study was to compare selected aspects of psychosocial functioning of young people training dancing and high school students that do not practice any sport, especially value system, social competences and sense of effi cacy. Questionnaire methods were used to analyzed the psychosocial profi les of young dancers. The obtained outcome indicate signifi cant differences between young people that train dancing and the ones who do not practice any sport. These differences are related to different hierarchy of values in both groups, higher results achieved by the dancers in the sense of efficacy and social competence

Rozwój prenatalny, okołoporodowy i niemowlęcy a możliwość wystąpienia dysfunkcji przetwarzania sensorycznego – wypowiedzi matek

Sensory processing disorders occur at about 5–15% of children causing a serious trouble in development. Due to therapeutic possibilities of early intervention, risk factors and symptoms of the disorder appearing in the early stages of a child’s development are under ongoing studies. Using the document analysis method, 305 interview questionnaires and diagnosis reports concerning children diagnosed with sensory integration dysfunction have been studied. The article presents the frequency of occurrence of pre-, peri- and postnatal factors in the study group and compares them with reports from foreign studies. The convergence of the indicators noticed in the study group with the existing knowledge on the etiology of sensory examination disorders has been demonstrated, and possible further research directions have been indicated.Zaburzenia przetwarzania sensorycznego występują u ok. 5–15% dzieci niewykazujących innych trudności w rozwoju. Ze względu na możliwe do uzyskania efekty terapii, jakie daje wczesna interwencja, wciąż badane są czynniki ryzyka oraz symptomy zaburzenia pojawiające się we wczesnym etapie rozwoju dziecka. Posługując się metodą analizy dokumentów, przestudiowano 305 kwestionariuszy wywiadów oraz arkuszy diagnoz dzieci z rozpoznaniem dysfunkcji integracji sensorycznej. W artykule przedstawiono częstotliwość występowania czynników pre-, peri- i postnatalnych w badanej grupie oraz porównano je z doniesieniami z badań zagranicznych. Wykazano zbieżność wskaźników wyróżniających się w badanej grupie z dotychczasową wiedzą na temat etiologii zaburzeń przetwarzania sensorycznego oraz wskazano możliwe dalsze kierunki badań

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are zinc-dependent endopeptidases, responsible for the integrity of the basement membrane (BM) via degradation of extracellular matrix and BM components. These enzymes are presented in central and peripheral nervous system. They are considered to be involved in the pathogenesis of several neurological diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS is a motor neuron disease, leading to muscle atrophy, paralysis and death within 3–5 years from diagnosis. Currently, there is no treatment that can substantially prolong life of ALS patients. Despite the fact that MMPs are not specific for ALS, there is also strong evidence that these enzymes are involved in the pathology of ALS. MMPs are able to exert direct neurotoxic effects, or may cause cell death by degrading matrix proteins. The objective of this paper is to provide an updated and comprehensive review concerning the role of MMPs and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) in the pathology of ALS with an emphasis on the significance of MMP-2 and MMP-9 as well as their tissue inhibitors as potential biomarkers of ALS. Numerous hypotheses have been proposed regarding the role of selected MMPs and TIMPs in ALS pathogenesis. Moreover, selective MMPs’ inhibitors might be potential targets for therapeutic strategies for patients with ALS. However, future investigations are necessary before some of those non-specific for ALS enzymes could finally be used as biomarkers of this disease

Effect of Rhizobium inoculation of seeds and foliar fertilization on productivity of Pisum sativum L.

Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is the second most important grain legume crop in the world which has a wide array of uses for human food and fodder. One of the major factors that determines the use of field pea is the yield potential of cultivars. Presently, pre-sowing inoculation of pea seeds and foliar application of microelement fertilizers are prospective solutions and may be reasonable agrotechnical options. This research was undertaken because of the potentially high productivity of the 'afila' morphotype in good wheat complex soils. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of vaccination with Rhizobium and foliar micronutrient fertilization on yield of the afila pea variety. The research was based on a two-year (2009–2010) controlled field experiment, conducted in four replicates and carried out on the experimental field of the Bayer company located in Modzurów, Silesian region. experimental field soil was Umbrisol – slightly degraded chernozem, formed from loess. Nitragina inoculant, as a source of symbiotic bacteria, was applied before sowing seeds. Green area index (GAI) of the canopy, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were determined at characteristic growth stages. The presented results of this study on symbiotic nitrogen fixation by leguminous plants show that the combined application of Nitragina and Photrel was the best combination for productivity. Remote measurements of the pea canopy indexes indicated the formation of the optimum leaf area which effectively used photosynthetically active radiation. The use of Nitragina as a donor of effective Rhizobium for pea plants resulted in slightly higher GAI values and the optimization of PAR and NDVI. It is not recommended to use foliar fertilizers or Nitragina separately due to the slowing of pea productivity
