    USING BREWER’S YEAST AND GINGER IN THE MANAGEMENT OF CONSTIPATION-PREDOMINANT IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME: A RANDOMIZED DOUBLE-BLIND PLACEBO-CONTROLLED TRIAL

    Objective: The objective of the present study is to confirm and/or prove the beneficial outcomes from using Brewer’s yeast and Ginger in constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C) subjects compared to placebo. Methods: A total of 45 patients suffering from IBS-C were enrolled in a double-blind placebo-controlled study as defined by Rome III criteria. Parallel groups were randomly assigned in this study: A placebo group, Brewer’s yeast group, and ginger group, taken daily for 20 days. IBS severity scale and visual analog scale for IBS (VAS-IBS) were used to assess the severity of pain, abdominal distention, and constipation (IBS-C) subjects. The data were measured at 3 times: At 0 time (T0), after 10 days of treatment (T10), and after 20 days of treatment (T20) for the three treatment groups. Results: Intragroup analysis showed a clinically significant reduction in the symptoms of abdominal pain, distention, and constipation, in the Brewer’s yeast group compared to placebo after the 20 days of the study. There was also a significant reduction of abdominal distention and constipation symptoms in the ginger group throughout the study. Conclusion: This study reveals the beneficial effects of Brewer’s yeast and ginger in reducing troublesome gastrointestinal symptoms in subjects with IBS-C and holds the promise to use them in IBS-C patient

    Ammonium Fluoride as a Hydrogen-disordering Agent for Ice

    The removal of residual hydrogen disorder from various phases of ice with acid or base dopants at low temperatures has been a focus of intense research for many decades. As an antipode to these efforts, we now show using neutron diffraction that ammonium fluoride (NH4F) is a hydrogen-disordering agent for the hydrogen-ordered ice VIII. Cooling its hydrogen-disordered counterpart ice VII doped with 2.5 mol% ND4F under pressure leads to a hydrogen-disordered ice VIII with ~31% residual hydrogen disorder illustrating the long-range hydrogen-disordering effect of ND4F. The doped ice VII could be supercooled by ~20 K with respect to the hydrogen-ordering temperature of pure ice VII after which the hydrogen-ordering took place slowly over a ~60 K temperature window. These findings demonstrate that ND4F-doping slows down the hydrogen-ordering kinetics quite substantially. The partial hydrogen order of the doped sample is consistent with the antiferroelectric ordering of pure ice VIII. Yet, we argue that local ferroelectric domains must exist between ionic point defects of opposite charge. In addition to the long-range effect of NH4F-doping on hydrogen-ordered water structures, the design principle of using topological charges should be applicable to a wide range of other 'ice-rule' systems including spin ices and related polar materials.Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures, 2 table

    Death Penalty for Drugs Dealers and Traffickers From the Perspective of Islamic Law

    This article examines the Islamic legal perspective on the application of capital punishment against drug dealers/traffickers. The aim is to find out whether these provisions are in accordance with the rules of Islamic law or not. This study uses a normative juridical approach which is carried out by examining legal norms or norms related to the object of discussion. This study finds out that Islamic law does not explicitly regulate drug crime, including determining sanctions for the dealers/traffickers. Islamic law only regulates the crime of liquor (khamer). Therefore, this criminal act can be included in the category of jarîmah ta\u27zîr which its legal sanctions are left to the authorities policy. Although this crime can be classified as a common crime, it is reasonable that the dealers/traffickers of the illicit goods are given severe punishment, even until sentenced to death, as this crime has a tremendously adverse effect not only for individuals but also for society and the nation as a whole. The sanction is in accordance with the principles of ushûl fiqh

    The Cytotoxic Effect of 2-Deoxy-D-Glucose Combination with 5-Fluorourasil and NO-Aspirin on Mammary Adenocacinoma Cell Line

    2-deoxy-D-glucose (2DG) and NO-Aspirin (NO-ASA) are new anticancer agents that are under intense clinical investigation for their remarkable cytotoxic activity. Combining 2DG, which targets glucose metabolism, with other agents mainly the DNA- and the mitochondrial-damaging agents represent a promising chemotherapeutic strategy.  In this study, we investigated the cytotoxic effects of 2DG, 5-fluorourasil (5FU), and NO-ASA on AMN3 breast cancer model, in addition to the cytotoxic effects of 2DG combination with 5FU and NO-ASA on the same cells. The cytotoxic activity of 2DG, 5FU, and NO-ASA was measured by using the MTT assay at 24, 48, and 72 hr. Then 2DG was combined with 5FU and NO-ASA in a constant concentration ratio based on their corresponding IC50s and the inhibition of cell growth was measured by MTT assay at 72hr. Median effect analysis was conducted to determine the cytotoxic activity of the combinations. 2DG, 5FU, and NO-ASA were found to exert a significant dose- and time-dependant growth inhibition on AMN3 cells. The mean combination index values reveal an additive effect for both combinations. This study demonstrated that 2DG and NO-ASA are capable of inhibiting the breast tumor growth effectively. It also shows that 2DG/5FU and 2DG/NO-ASA combinations result in mean additive effects with good dose reduction index values that have the advantages of reducing the toxicity, adverse effects, and the drug resistance in cancer patients.     Performance evaluation of wireless MEMS accelerometer for reciprocating compressor condition monitoring

    With recent development in wireless communication and Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology, it becomes easier to monitor rotating machinery conditions by mounting compact wireless MEMS accelerometers directly on the rotor. This has the potential to provide more accurate dynamic characteristics of the rotating machine and hence achieving high monitoring performance. In this paper, a tiny MEMS accelerometer together with a battery powered microcontroller is mounted on the flywheel to acquire the on-rotor accelerations of a two-stage reciprocating compressor. The measured acceleration data is streamed to a host computer wirelessly via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) module. The true tangential acceleration is reconstructed by combining two orthogonal outputs of the sensor, which contain gravitational accelerations. To evaluate the performance of the wireless sensor, three different fault conditions including intercooler leakage, second stage discharge valve leakage and asymmetric stator winding of the motor driver are simulated individually on the compressor test rig. To confirm the wireless sensor performance, an incremental optical encoder was installed on the compressor flywheel to acquire the Instantaneous Angular Speed (IAS) signal for comparison with signals from the wireless sensor. The experimental results show that the running status of the compressor can be remotely monitored, allowing different leakages and motor faults to be diagnosed based on the tangential acceleration reconstructed from a wireless on-rotor MEMS accelerometer

    Structural and Stratigraphic 3D Seismic Study of NahrUmr and Zubair Formations in Kifl oil field _ center of Iraq

    This research is a reflection seismic study (structural and stratigraphic) of a 268.7 km2 area located in the central Iraq within the Karbala province (Kifl area). The study area was interpreted by using 3-D seismic data from Oil Exploration Company. Synthetic traces are prepared by using available data of the four wells (Kf-1), (Kf-2), (Kf-3) and (Kf-4), in order to define and piking the reflector on seismic section, These reflector are: (NahrUmr, Shuaiba, Zubair and Ratawi Formations) which are deposited during the lower cretaceous age. Faults were picked using instantaneous phase attribute of seismic section across 3D seismic volume of the studied reflectors. The study area affected by a major fault and minor normal faults, Two faults system has been observed in the study area; the major normal fault of (NW-SE) trending and minor normal faults of (NE-SW) trending, with a small displacement are influenced the studied reflectors. The time slices were studied across 3D seismic volume of the studied reflector, they proved the presence the structural anticline at lower cretaceous reflection level. Time, velocity and depth maps are prepared depending on the structural interpretation of the picked reflectors, the structural interpretation of these reflectors shows a structural anticline extending in NW-SE trend and plunges to the south east, and the general dip towards the east. Using seismic attribute techniques including (instantaneous frequency, RMS amplitude maps and reflection strength section), these attributes showed decreasing in frequency, amplitude and strength values. These reflect rocks of low velocity and indicate the presence of hydrocarbon accumulation area. The study of seismic facies of the picked reflectors distinction parallel seismic configuration. The results shows the Zubair and NahrUmrfacies are clastic depositional system deposited on delta platform, Zubair represents delta platform facies consisting of shallow- water, high-energy marine (delta sandstone, channel-fill sandstones).Pinch out are picked and interpreted by using cosine instantaneous phase attributes, these phenomena can be regarded as Pinch out stratigraphical traps. It's the main factor to explain the difference in thickness of the oil column between well Kf-4 and well Kf-1. Mound and Flat spot phenomenon has been observed within Zubair reflector by using the seismic composite attributes (Band bass filter on an instantaneousphase attributes, as mound stratigraphic traps and flat spot which is represent of Direct Hydrocarbon Indicators (DHI) that refers to the presence of hydrocarbons. Where the use of this techniques has helped to identify the (DHI) for hydrocarbon accumulation and have not been previously identified.Finally 3D seismic model for Kifl field show the extension of structural anticline and its plunge and the distribution of hydrocarbons accumulations in the Kifl field

    If current inhibitor ivabradine in patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy: Impact on the exercise tolerance and quality of life

    Background: Evidence supported a beneficial effect of ivabradine on clinical outcome of patients with systolic heart failure, and a sinus heart rate (HR) ≥ 70 bpm. We explored the effect of ivabradine, vs. placebo, added to evidence-based treatment on exercise tolerance and quality of life in patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. Methods: We enrolled 43 consecutive patients with dilated cardiomyopathy of no apparent cause, a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) < 40%, New York Heart Association class ≥ II, sinus HR ≥ 70 bpm, and background evidence-based anti-failure medications. Ischemic heart disease was ruled out. Patients were randomized (1:1) to receive ivabradine or placebo. Ivabradine was titrated up gradually till 7.5 mg twice daily, or a HR < 60 bpm, and continued for 3 months. Symptom-limited exercise tolerance test was performed, and quality of life was assessed by the Minnesota Living With Heart Failure Questionnaire at 0, and 3 months. Results: Forty-three patients were randomized to ivabradine (n = 20), or placebo (n = 23). Mean age was 50.8 ± 14.5 years (53.5% males). Mean HR was 85 ± 12 bpm, and mean LVEF was 32 ± 6%. Mean dose of carvedilol was 31.2% of the target dose. Baseline HR, blood pressure, exercise tolerance, Minnesota questionnaire score, and left ventricular systolic function were comparable between the two groups (p > 0.05 for all). At 3 months, mean dose of ivabradine was 6.8 mg bid. Ivabradine-treated patients had a lower HR, and improved left ventricular dimensions and systolic function, versus placebo-treated ones (p < 0.05 for all). HR dropped by a mean of 14 bpm in the ivabradine group, corrected for placebo. Both exercise tolerance, and Minnesota questionnaire score were better in the ivabradine group (p < 0.05 both). Ivabradine was well-tolerated. Conclusions: In symptomatic patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, the addition of ivabradine, vs. placebo, to evidence-based treatment, reduced HR, and improved functional capacity, at short-term follow-up
