Analysis of Higher Education Indicators Coherency in Central and Eastern Europe

    Get PDF
Background: Higher education has the main role in generating innovative activity in knowledge-based economies. Therefore, the efficiency of the higher education sector reflects the alignment of the higher education policy with government expenditure. However, countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE region) have been struggling with national budget optimisation, which can cause fiscal stress and thus affect the efficiency of higher education. Objectives: The main objective is to examine mutual interaction of higher education indicators, through formulating financial models that connect performance and financial indicators. Methods/Approach: A total of 4 higher education indicators were analysed and observed in the time period of 10 years in selected CEE countries. The statistical analysis was based on panel data models. Results: The main result of the paper is the analysis of coherency of selected higher education indicators in selected CEE countries in order to establish functional links between government expenditure and efficiency through formulating financial models. Conclusions: Formulated financial models can predict the behaviour of selected performance indicators, depending on financial indicators. Therefore, the obtained models can contribute to the efficient allocation of funds and comprehensive macro-level decision making assessments in higher education policy reforms

Comparison of chemical and biological wireworm control options in Serbian sunflower fields and a proposition for a refined wireworm damage assessment

Recent European Union regulations aim at reducing the use of chemical pesticides in agriculture. In sunflower production in Serbia, the use of synthetic insecticides for soil and seed treatments has become a prevailing practice for wireworm (Coleoptera: Elateridae) control. However, a number of compounds efficiently used as seed treatments have been phased out. This work aimed at assessing the potential of an environmentally friendly “Attract and Kill” strategy (A&K) for controlling wireworms in sunflower in comparison to conventional insecticides. The experiments were carried out in 2018, 2019 and 2021 involving (a) soil treatments with ATTRACAP® and a Force 1.5 G; (b) seed treatments with Sonido, Force 20 CS, Lumiposa and Buteo Start 480 FS; (c) controls (i.e., untreated seeds). The efficacy of the treatments was assessed based on the plant density and emerging plant damage (%). A damage rating scale (levels 0–5) was created, aiming for a more reliable and concrete interpretation of the results. Data were processed using binomial and multinomial regressions, followed by modelling of the damage and calculating the odds of damage occurrence, depending on the applied insecticide. In all experimental years and at all localities, the Force 20 CS and/or Force 1.5 G treatments resulted in the highest plant density and the lowest percentage of plant damage. ATTRACAP® showed good effectiveness, since plant density and percentage of damaged plants were at the same level of significance as the commonly used conventional insecticides in sunflower production (Sonido for seed treatment and Force 1.5 G for soil treatment). Thus, the A&K strategy was efficient in controlling wireworms at conditions of low abundance, based on three-year experimental results. Although the damage rating scale enabled a clear differentiation of plant damage caused by wireworms responsible for reduced plant density, more reliable models were obtained by binomial regressions, classifying plants as damaged or undamaged

    1.1. The Special Colombeau Algebra

    No full text
Abstract. Positivity and positive definiteness in algebra of generalized functions are studied. Basic definitions and notions of Colombeau algebra of generalized functions are given and some special classes of positive definite generalized functions on those algebras are introduced. Their relation to distributions is also investigated. AMS Mathematics Subject Classification (2000): Key words and phrases: Colombeau generalized functions, positive definite

The application of multimedia and its effects on teaching physics in secondary school

    No full text
The paper presents the results of the pedagogical research conducted to examine the effects of multimedia application on teaching physics compared to the traditional method of teaching. The research was carried out on the sample of 140 students of the first grade of technical school. The influence of multimedia application in teaching physics on the quantum, quality and retention of students’ knowledge was examined by the experimental method. Knowledge tests were used as research instrument. Tests questions were divided based on Bloom’s taxonomy into three basic categories: remembering, understanding and applying. It was determined that multimedia application in teaching physics had resulted in a significant increase of the quantum and quality of students’ knowledge in all categories, as well as the retention of knowledge quality in the category of applying compared to the traditional method of teaching. Research results have shown the validity of multimedia application in teaching practice with the aim of enhancing understanding of fundamental physical concepts and laws, and therefore increasing the efficiency of teaching physics

Cigarette Smoking among Medical Students from the Western Balkan

University student’s smoking is a significant public health problem. It is estimated that, globally, every fifth medical student is a smoker. So far, no research dealing with cigarette smoking among medical students has been conducted in the countries of the Western Balkans. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and risk factors of cigarette smoking among Western Balkans medical students. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 2452 students from 14 medical faculties in the Western Balkans (Republic of Slovenia, Republic of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republic of North Macedonia and Republic of Serbia). The data were gathered through an online survey. There were significantly more non-smokers than smokers among medical students. Only gender and parents smoking status were statistically significantly associated with students smoking status. The smokers were more often male students, who lived in urban areas prior their studies, and whose parents were both smokers. With the aim of monitoring and enhancing student population health, it is necessary for public health activists and health officials to continually survey the students’ smoking status in order to recognize the smoking influencing factors, and form and take on appropriate activities to improve the prevention of cigarette smoking among students, as well as motivate those who smoke to give up smoking, which would contribute to improving the health of the student population

Substituent effects on chromatographic retention data of 5-arylidene-2,4-thiazolidinediones in qsar methodology

Quantitative structure-retention relationship (QSRR) study of retention data of thirteen 5-arylidene-2,4-thiazolidinediones obtained by reversed phase HPTLC. The effect of substituents attached to aryliden ring on the properties of TZD molecule, whose retention is closely correlated to the inhibitory activity, was investigated. PCA was used to show similarities/dissimilarities among the compounds. Stepwise regression models were calculated for each mobile phase modifier used. The obtained models were characterized by good fit and predictive abilities. The descriptors included in the models are connected with both lipophilic and donor/acceptor interactions
