    Age Dating Stellar Populations in the Near Infrared: An absolute age indicator from the presence/absence of red supergiants

    The determination of age is a critical component in the study of a population of stellar clusters. In this letter we present a new absolute age indicator for young massive star clusters based on J-H colour. This novel method identifies clusters as older or younger than 5.7 +/- 0.8 Myr based on the appearance of the first population of red supergiant stars. We test the technique on the stellar cluster population of the nearby spiral galaxy, M83, finding good agreement with the theoretical predictions. The localisation of this technique to the near-IR promises that it may be used well into the future with space-- and ground--based missions optimised for near-IR observations.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures.     Quantum dynamics of the avian compass

    The ability of migratory birds to orient relative to the Earth's magnetic field is believed to involve a coherent superposition of two spin states of a radical electron pair. However, the mechanism by which this coherence can be maintained in the face of strong interactions with the cellular environment has remained unclear. This Letter addresses the problem of decoherence between two electron spins due to hyperfine interaction with a bath of spin 1/2 nuclei. Dynamics of the radical pair density matrix are derived and shown to yield a simple mechanism for sensing magnetic field orientation. Rates of dephasing and decoherence are calculated ab initio and found to yield millisecond coherence times, consistent with behavioral experiments

    Fast algorithm for detecting community structure in networks

    It has been found that many networks display community structure -- groups of vertices within which connections are dense but between which they are sparser -- and highly sensitive computer algorithms have in recent years been developed for detecting such structure. These algorithms however are computationally demanding, which limits their application to small networks. Here we describe a new algorithm which gives excellent results when tested on both computer-generated and real-world networks and is much faster, typically thousands of times faster than previous algorithms. We give several example applications, including one to a collaboration network of more than 50000 physicists.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Stimulated Muscle Contractions Regulate Membrane-Bound and Soluble TLR4 to Prevent LPS-Induced Signaling and Myotube Atrophy in Skeletal Muscle Cells

    Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) activation by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) contributes to chronic inflammation and causes upregulation of muscle atrophy signaling pathways. Exercise can suppress LPS/TLR4 axis activation by reducing the expression of TLR4 on immune cells. It is unknown how this regulation occurs, and it is not clear how exercise affects TLR4 on skeletal muscle. PURPOSE: To uncover the nature and mechanisms by which exercise affects TLR4 expression and intracellular signaling using cell culture models and human experiments. METHODS: C2C12 myotubes were subjected to electrical pulse stimulation (EPS) with and without subsequent treatment with 500 ng/mL lipopolysaccharide (LPS) along with corresponding control conditions. To investigate the effect of muscle contraction on the regulation of TLR4 in-vivo, we analyzed PBMC and serum samples from eight recreationally active men that completed 60-minutes of cycling at a moderate intensity (65% of VO2max). RESULTS: In-vitro, LPS decreased membrane-bound TLR4, increased TLR4 signaling (decreased inhibitor of κBα), and induced myotube atrophy. However, stimulated muscle contractions decreased membrane-bound TLR4, increased soluble TLR4 (sTLR4), and prevented LPS-induced signaling and myotube atrophy. In human participants, a single bout of moderate-intensity exercise decreased membrane-bound TLR4 on PBMCs and increased serum-borne sTLR4. CONCLUSION: These experiments support exercise may exert a novel anti-catabolic/ anti-inflammatory effect by increasing sTLR4 and decreasing TLR4 expressed on the muscle membrane. These results could help improve interventions for conditions associated with TLR4-mediated inflammation and muscle atrophy, such as diabetes, sarcopenia, and cancer cachexia

    Methods for sampling geographically mobile female traders in an East African market setting.

    BACKGROUND:The role of migration in the spread of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa is well-documented. Yet migration and HIV research have often focused on HIV risks to male migrants and their partners, or migrants overall, often failing to measure the risks to women via their direct involvement in migration. Inconsistent measures of mobility, gender biases in those measures, and limited data sources for sex-specific population-based estimates of mobility have contributed to a paucity of research on the HIV prevention and care needs of migrant and highly mobile women. This study addresses an urgent need for novel methods for developing probability-based, systematic samples of highly mobile women, focusing on a population of female traders operating out of one of the largest open air markets in East Africa. Our method involves three stages: 1.) identification and mapping of all market stall locations using Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates; 2.) using female market vendor stall GPS coordinates to build the sampling frame using replicates; and 3.) using maps and GPS data for recruitment of study participants. RESULTS:The location of 6,390 vendor stalls were mapped using GPS. Of these, 4,064 stalls occupied by women (63.6%) were used to draw four replicates of 128 stalls each, and a fifth replicate of 15 pre-selected random alternates for a total of 527 stalls assigned to one of five replicates. Staff visited 323 stalls from the first three replicates and from these successfully recruited 306 female vendors into the study for a participation rate of 94.7%. Mobilization strategies and involving traders association representatives in participant recruitment were critical to the study's success. CONCLUSION:The study's high participation rate suggests that this geospatial sampling method holds promise for development of probability-based samples in other settings that serve as transport hubs for highly mobile populations

    The relation between the diagonal entries and the eigenvalues of a symmetric matrix, based upon the sign pattern of its off-diagonal entries

    It is known that majorization is a complete description of the relationships between the eigenvalues and diagonal entries of real symmetric matrices. However, for large subclasses of such matrices, the diagonal entries impose much greater restrictions on the eigenvalues. Motivated by previous results about Laplacian eigenvalues, we study here the additional restrictions that come from the off-diagonal sign-pattern classes of real symmetric matrices. Each class imposes additional restrictions. Several results are given for the all nonpositive and all nonnegative classes and for the third class that appears when n = 4. We show that NPO(k)NPO(k) is well-defined and prove that the values of NPO(k)NPO(k) for k=1,2,3,4,5k=1,2,3,4,5 are 1,3,6,10,161,3,6,10,16 respectively. In addition, we prove that for all k5k \geq 5, R(k,k+1)NPO(k)>TkR(k,k+1) \ge NPO(k) > T_k, in which R(k,k+1)R(k,k+1) is the Ramsey number for kk and k+1k+1, and TkT_k is the kthk^{th} triangular number. This implies new lower bounds for eigenvalues of Laplacian matrices: the kk-th largest eigenvalue is bounded from below by the NPO(k)NPO(k)-th largest degree, which generalizes some prior results.Comment: 23 pages, 12 figure
