    Synthesis of compact NaA zeolite membrane by microwave heating method

    A continuous and dense NaA zeolite membrane was synthesized by microwave heating method while employing a multi-step seeding LTA zeolite with the average size of 120 tun. The gas H-2/N-2 mixture separating results indicated that the mixture selectivity increased with increasing of synthesis times. In addition, selectivity of the three-step synthesis was higher than the value(3.74) expected from Kundsen diffusion

    Applying the selective Cu electroplating technique to light-emitting diodes

    [[abstract]]We successfully fabricated a predefined patterned copper (Cu) substrate for thin GaN light-emitting diodes without barriers by the selective electroplating technique. The contours of Cu bumps fabricated using different electroplating modes and parameters were measured. We observed that the average thickness diminished with increasing current density.     Monsoon versus Uplift in Southwestern China–Late Pliocene Climate in Yuanmou Basin, Yunnan

    Yuanmou Basin of Yunnan, SW China, is a famous locality with hominids, hominoids, mammals and plant fossils. Based on the published megaflora and palynoflora data from Yuanmou Basin, the climate of Late Pliocene is reconstructed using the Coexistence Approach. The results indicate a warm and humid subtropical climate with a mean annual temperature of ca. 16–17°C and a mean annual precipitation of ca. 1500–1600 mm in the Late Pliocene rather than a dry, hot climate today, which may be due to the local tectonic change and gradual intensification of India monsoon. The comparison of Late Pliocene climate in Eryuan, Yangyi, Longling, and Yuanmou Basin of Yunnan Province suggests that the mean annual temperatures generally show a latitudinal gradient and fit well with their geographic position, while the mean annual precipitations seem to be related to the different geometries of the valleys under the same monsoon system

    A RAC/CDC-42–Independent GIT/PIX/PAK Signaling Pathway Mediates Cell Migration in C. elegans

    P21 activated kinase (PAK), PAK interacting exchange factor (PIX), and G protein coupled receptor kinase interactor (GIT) compose a highly conserved signaling module controlling cell migrations, immune system signaling, and the formation of the mammalian nervous system. Traditionally, this signaling module is thought to facilitate the function of RAC and CDC-42 GTPases by allowing for the recruitment of a GTPase effector (PAK), a GTPase activator (PIX), and a scaffolding protein (GIT) as a regulated signaling unit to specific subcellular locations. Instead, we report here that this signaling module functions independently of RAC/CDC-42 GTPases in vivo to control the cell shape and migration of the distal tip cells (DTCs) during morphogenesis of the Caenorhabditis elegans gonad. In addition, this RAC/CDC-42–independent PAK pathway functions in parallel to a classical GTPase/PAK pathway to control the guidance aspect of DTC migration. Among the C. elegans PAKs, only PAK-1 functions in the GIT/PIX/PAK pathway independently of RAC/CDC42 GTPases, while both PAK-1 and MAX-2 are redundantly utilized in the GTPase/PAK pathway. Both RAC/CDC42–dependent and –independent PAK pathways function with the integrin receptors, suggesting that signaling through integrins can control the morphology, movement, and guidance of DTC through discrete pathways. Collectively, our results define a new signaling capacity for the GIT/PIX/PAK module that is likely to be conserved in vertebrates and demonstrate that PAK family members, which are redundantly utilized as GTPase effectors, can act non-redundantly in pathways independent of these GTPases

    Imperfection works: Survival, transmission and persistence in the system of Heliothis virescens ascovirus 3h (HvAV-3h), Microplitis similis and Spodoptera exigua

    Ascoviruses are insect-specific large DNA viruses that mainly infect noctuid larvae, and are transmitted by parasitoids in the fields. Heliothis virescens ascovirus 3h (HvAV-3h) has been recently isolated from Spodoptera exigua, without parasitoid vector identified previously. Here we report that Microplitis similis, a solitary endoparasitoid wasp, could transmit HvAV-3h between S. exigua larvae in the laboratory. When the female parasitoid wasp acquired the virus and served as a vector, the period of virion viability on the ovipositor was 4.1 ± 1.4 days. Infected host larvae were still acceptable for egg laying by parasitoids, and the parasitoids thereafter transmitted virus to healthy hosts. Virus acquisition occurred only from donor hosts between 3 and 9 days post infection. The peak of virus acquisition (80.9 ± 6.3%) was found when M. similis wasps oviposited in larvae that had been inoculated with the virus 7 days previously. When virus infection of the host took place during the life cycle of the parasitoid wasp, it caused 1- to 4-day-old immature parasitoids death in the host, whilst a small proportion of 5- to 6-day-old and the majority of 7-day-old parasitoids larvae survived from the virus-infected hosts. Viral contamination did not reduce the life span or fecundity of female M. similis

    Synthesis of compact ZSM-5 zeolite membrane by adding the promoter NaCl

    The compact ZSM-5 membranes was synthesized on porous alumina substrates by pre-coating narrosized ZSM-5 seeds and then employing the twice hydrothermal synthesis with adding the promoter NaCl. Effect of Na+ concentration on the formation of membrane was investigated in this work, indicating that adding a certain mount of NaCl can boost the growth of zeolite crystals on the substrates, thus forming the compact membrane consisted of highly intergrown crystals. The separating performance of zeolite membranes indicated that using a mixture with a composition of Al2O3: 84SiO(2): 10Na(2)O: 100NaCl: 15TPABr: 3500H(2)O as synthesis gel, the ideal selectivity of H-2/C3H8 could reach a maximum value of 23.7 at room temperature and pressure difference of 0.1 MPa, and the permselectivity decreased to 9.4 at testing temperature of 200 degreesC, which is still higher than the corresponding Knudsen diffusion value (4.69), suggesting that the membrane synthesized by this method was defect-free

    Influence of adding multiwalled carbon nanotubes on the adhesive strength of composite epoxy/sol–gel materials

    The tensile shear strength of a composite epoxy/sol–gel system modified with different ratios of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was evaluated using a mechanical testing machine. The experimental results showed that the shear strength increased when lower than ~0.07 wt% of MWCNTs were added in the composite solution. The increase of the shear strength was attributed to both the mechanical load transfer from the matrix to the MWCNTs and the high specific surface area of this material that increased the degree of crosslinking with other inorganic fillers in the formulation. However, a decrease in the adhesive shear strength was observed after more than ~0.07 wt% MWCNTs were added to the composite. The reason for this may be related to the high concentration of MWCNTs within the matrix leading to excessively high viscosity, dewetting of the substrate surfaces, and reduced bonding of MWCNTs with the matrix, thereby limiting the strength. SEM observation of the fracture surfaces for composite epoxy/sol–gel adhesive materials with 0.01 wt% MWCNTs showed a mixed interfacial/cohesive fracture mode. This fracture mode indicated strong links at the adhesive/substrate interface, and interaction between CNTs and the matrix was achieved; therefore, adhesion performance of the composite epoxy/sol–gel material to the substrate was improved. An increase of a strong peak related to the C–O bond at ~1733 cm-1 in the FTIR spectra was observed. This peak represented crosslinking between the CNT surface and the organosilica nanoparticles in the MWCNTs-doped composite adhesive. Raman spectroscopy was also used to identify MWCNTs within the adhesive material. The Raman spectra exhibit peaks at ~1275 cm-1 and in the range of ~1549–1590 cm-1. The former is the graphite G-band, while the latter is the diamond D-band. The D-band and G-band represent the C–C single bond and C=C double bond in carbon nanotubes, respectively

    Genetic variations in APPL2 are associated with overweight and obesity in a Chinese population with normal glucose tolerance

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>APPL1 and APPL2 are two adaptor proteins, which can mediate adiponectin signaling via binding to N terminus of adiponectin receptors in muscle cells. Genes encoding adiponectin and adiponectin receptors contribute to insulin resistance and the risk of obesity, and genetic variants of <it>APPL1 </it>are associated with body fat distribution. However, the association between genetic variations of <it>APPL2 </it>and metabolic traits remains unknown. In the current study, we aimed to test the impacts of <it>APPL2 </it>genetic variants on obesity in a Chinese population with normal glucose tolerance.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We genotyped six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in <it>APPL2 </it>in 1,808 non-diabetic subjects. Overweight and obesity were defined by body mass index (BMI). Obesity-related anthropometric parameters were measured, including height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference. BMI and waist-hip ratio (WHR) were calculated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found significant evidence of association with overweight/obesity for rs2272495 and rs1107756. rs2272495 C allele and rs1107756 T allele both conferred a higher risk of being overweight and obese (OR 1.218, 95% CI 1.047-1.416, <it>p </it>= 0.011 for rs2272495; OR 1.166, 95% CI 1.014-1.341, <it>p </it>= 0.031 for rs1107756). After adjusting multiple comparisons, only the effect of rs2272495 on overweight/obesity remained to be significant (empirical <it>p </it>= 0.043). Moreover, we investigated the effects of these SNPs on obesity-related quantitative traits in all participants. rs2272495 was associated with BMI (<it>p </it>= 0.015), waist circumference (<it>p </it>= 0.006), hip circumference (<it>p </it>= 0.025) as well as WHR (<it>p </it>= 0.047) under a recessive model. Similar associations were found for rs1107756 except for WHR.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study suggests that genetic variations in <it>APPL2 </it>are associated with overweight and obesity in Chinese population with normal glucose tolerance.</p
