Inbreeding depression in castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) progenies.
The purpose of this study was to investigate inbreeding depression (DE) in castor bean. From a population derived from the Guarani cultivar, 60 mother plants were sampled. Three types of progenies were obtained from each one: from self-pollination (AU), from crosses (CR) and from open pollination (PL). Grain yield of the progenies was evaluated in two locations. There was a strong interaction of progenies x locations, which led to obtaining estimates within each location. Broad variation was observed in inbreeding depression, with mean values of 6.7% and 13.4%, comparing AU progenies with PL progenies. It was observed that the population has high potential for selecting promising inbred lines. The frequency of mother plants generating progenies with simultaneous high general combination capacity and low inbreeding depression was low. Recurrent selection will increase the occurrence of parent plants associating these two properties, which is necessary for obtaining superior synthetic varieties. Glass and glass-ceramic from basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag
A method is presented to produce glass-ceramics from a BOF slag glass containing a high amount of iron. The composition design of these unusual glasses, their melting and crystallization behavior, their crystal nucleation kinetics and the micro structures resulting from different thermal treatments are analyzed and discussed. Several compositions were tested, varying the proportions of slag, sand and Na2CO3 in the batch. A batch with a composition (in wt%) of 60 slag, 35 sand, 5 Na2O showed good vitrificability and displayed bulk crystallization after thermal treatment, and was therefore chosen for a more detailed study. Crystallized materials with nanometric microstructures were obtained using suitable treatments. Fracture strength, hardness and chemical resistance tests were performed. A product with fine volumetric crystallization, a high degree of crystallization, having marble-like appearance, improved mechanical strength and suitable chemical durability was obtained. The material may be suitable for floor and wall tile applications in the construction industry
High frequency mechanical excitation of a silicon nanostring with piezoelectric aluminum nitride layers
A strong trend for quantum based technologies and applications follows the
avenue of combining different platforms to exploit their complementary
technological and functional advantages. Micro and nano-mechanical devices are
particularly suitable for hybrid integration due to the easiness of fabrication
at multi-scales and their pervasive coupling with electrons and photons. Here,
we report on a nanomechanical technological platform where a silicon chip is
combined with an aluminum nitride layer. Exploiting the AlN piezoelectricity,
Surface Acoustic Waves are injected in the Si layer where the material has been
localy patterned and etched to form a suspended nanostring. Characterizing the
nanostring vertical displacement induced by the SAW, we found an external
excitation peak efficiency in excess of 500 pm/V at 1 GHz mechanical frequency.
Exploiting the long term expertise in silicon photonic and electronic devices
