Fish assemblages across the Mediterranean Sea and the effects of protection from fishing = I Popolamenti ittici nel Mediterraneo e gli effetti della protezione dall’impatto della pesca

    Get PDF
Several studies have assessed the effectiveness of individual marine protected areas (MPAs) in protecting fish assemblages, but regional assessments of multiple parks are scarce. Here fish surveys using visual census were done in marine parks and fished areas at 31 locations across the Mediterranean Sea. Fish species richness, diversity and biomass (especially of top predators) were higher in MPAs compared to fished areas, and community structure differed significantly between MPAs and fished areas. Results suggest that MPAs are generally effective means to protect and recover fish populations and assemblages

Publicad

    Get PDF
Regional development is driven by several factors, one of which has to do with urbanization processes that lead to an improvement in the quality of life of citizens and enhance the competitiveness of cities. In order to finance these urban development works, local administrations have the possibility of leveraging on a mechanism that has proven to be effective throughout history, and that is the valorization contribution. Manizales has been one of the cities that has implemented this mechanism on several occasions and for specific works, which has allowed it to serve as a reference for other cities to be encouraged to implement this same financing model. In this order of ideas, this research was carried out with the purpose of determining the factors associated with the development of infrastructure works through the valorization system in the municipality of Manizales and its impact on the development of the city. For this purpose, a qualitative, descriptive research approach was chosen, using techniques such as semi-structured interviews and documentary review for the collection, systematization and analysis of the information. The findings showed that the experience of the city of Manizales in the management of the valorization mechanism has been positive, as it has demonstrated that large-scale works can be executed with an efficient and transparent use of financial resources for the improvement of the city's infrastructure, which results in a better quality of life for its citizens, favors regional development and makes it a more competitive city in the national context

Economic Impact of Distribution Grid Operation Scenarios for the Integration of Electric Vehicles

    Get PDF
The paper lists the drivers and the barriers for a widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), describes the different stakeholders involved in the electro-mobility ecosystem and summarises the main issues for the integration of EVs in distribution grids. Then, it presents some outcomes of the PlanGridEV Project, including the proposed new grid planning criteria, the envisaged future scenarios for EV integration, the expected services to be provided by EVs to distribution system operators and the ICT requirements linked to those services.Electric Vehicles (EVs) will become an important part of the transport system in Europe and can thus create a number of benefits in term of oil dependence reduction, air quality improvement and trade balance enhancement. However, they can also become a burden for distribution system operator (DSOs) if they charge in an uncontrolled way. In addition, the increasing deployment of renewable energy sources (RES) and other distributed energy resources (DER) are making the distribution grid planning more complicated than in the past, when consumers were considered to be passive elements and grid was dimensioned to meet peak demand. PlanGridEV project proposes new planning procedures, which take into account the possibility to manage consumers’ electricity demand, including the charging process of EVs, both to better integrate DER and to more efficiently plan the investments in the distribution grid. The planning rules will be validated by carrying out four test beds, which will serve as an input for assessing the economic performance of four scenarios, representing four theoretical alternatives for distribution grid planning. Different services that EVs can provide to DSOs and other actors in the e-mobility ecosystem will be analysed in each scenario. Then, a grid planning tool will be developed to help DSOs consider EVs and demand and other demand response (DR) capabilities when planning distribution grid extension.European Commission's FP

OpenFlowMon: a fully distributed monitoring framework for virtualized environments

    Get PDF
Proceedings of: 2021 IEEE Conference on Network Function Virtualization and Software Defined Networks (NFV-SDN), 9 November 2021, Heraklion, Greece.Network monitoring allows a continuous assessment on the health and performance of the network infrastructure. With the significant change on how networks are deployed and operated, mainly due to the advent of virtualization technologies, alternative monitoring approaches are emerging to provide a finer-grained flow monitoring to complement already existing mechanisms and capabilities. In this paper, we proposed and developed an Open-Source Flow Monitoring Framework (OpenFlowMon), a fully distributed monitoring framework implemented solely with open-source solutions. This framework is used to assess the performance and the overhead introduced by two different flow monitoring approaches: (i) switch level and (ii) compute node level monitoring. Results show that monitoring at compute node level not only reduces the overhead but also mitigates a potential complex post-processing in east-to-west traffic. This work has been (partially) funded by H2020 EU/TW 5G-DIVE (Grant 859881) and H2020 5Growth (Grant 856709)

Influence of magnetic ordering on structural instabilities in insulating perovskites

We propose a general model, based on Anderson superexchange and the pseudo Jahn-Teller effect, to explain why ferroelectric and octahedral tilting distortions are favored by ferromagnetic ordering when compared to antiferromagnetic tilting distortions in ABX3 (A = alkali, alkaline-earth ion, f-filling rare earth; B = magnetic transition-metal ion; X = O2−, F−) perovskite crystals. Ab initio calculations are used to check the model under a wide range of pressures for oxides and fluorides, with the latter displaying an enhancement of the ferroelectric distortion when pressure is increased. The support by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología under Project FIS2009-07083 and computational time in both the Altamira Supercomputing node and Calderon HPC cluster in Universidad de Cantabria is acknowledged. Phenotypic, Molecular and Symbiotic Characterization of the Rhizobial Symbionts of Desmanthus paspalaceus (Lindm.) Burkart That Grow in the Province of Santa Fe, Argentina

Desmanthus paspalaceus (Lindm.) Burkart belongs to the D. virgatus complex, subfamily Mimosoidae. The known potential as livestock fodder of several of these legumes prompted us to undertake a phenotypic, molecular, and symbiotic characterization of the D. paspalaceus symbionts in the Santa Fe province, Argentina. The rhizobia collected—containing isolates with different abiotic-stress tolerances—showed a remarkable genetic diversity by PCR fingerprinting, with 11 different amplification profiles present among 20 isolates. In selected isolates 16S-rDNA sequencing detected mesorhizobia (60%) and rhizobia (40%) within the collection, in contrast to the genus of the original inoculant strain CB3126—previously isolated from Leucaena leucocephala—that we typified here through its 16S rDNA as Sinorhizobium terangae. The results revealed the establishment by diverse bacterial genera -rhizobia, sinorhizobia, and mesorhizobia- of full N2-fixing symbiotic associations with D. paspalaceus. This diversity was paralleled by the presence of at least two different nodC allelic variants. The identical nodC alleles of the Mesorhizobia sp. 10.L.4.2 and 10.L.5.3 notably failed to group within any of the currently described rhizo-/brady-/azorhizobial nodC clades. Interestingly, the nodC from S. terangae CB3126 clustered close to homologs from common bean nodulating rhizobia, but not with the nodC from S. terangae WSM1721 that nodulates Acacia. No previous data were available on nod-gene phylogeny for Desmanthus symbionts. A field assay indicated that inoculation of D. paspalaceus with the local Rhizobium sp. 10L.11.4 produced higher aerial-plant dry weights compared to S. teranga CB3126–inoculated plants. Neither the mesorhizobia 10.L.4.2 or 10.L.5.3 nor the rhizobium 10L.11.4 induced root nodules in L. leucocephala or P. vulgaris. The results show that some of the local isolates have remarkable tolerances to several abiotic stresses including acidity, salt, and temperature; while exhibiting prominent N2 fixation; thus indicating suitability as candidates for inoculation of D. paspalaceus.Fil: Fornasero, Laura Viviana. The school climate is one of the keys to the efficiency, quality and improvement of the school. For this reason, numerous studies have highlighted the importance of evaluating this construct. However, there is still no measure in Spanish that evaluates the most relevant aspects of school climate in a valid and reliable way. This paper has two main objectives that try to overcome this limitation: (1) to analyse the internal structure and internal consistency reliability of the Students’ Perception of School Climate scale (escala Percepción del Alumnado sobre el Clima Escolar—PACE-33); and (2) examine its measurement and structural invariance across men and women. This study involved 1180 adolescents (mean age, Mage = 15.37 years; standard deviation, SD = 1.90) selected by means of incidental sampling. The results obtained show that, among the models tested, the one corresponding to nine correlated factors shows the best adjustment to the data; furthermore, they note that it presents adequate internal consistency indices. The results also prove that this model is equivalent in men and women. These data support that the PACE-33 is a valid and reliable measure to assess the adolescents’ perception of the main aspects of the school climateThis research was funded by the consolidated research group IT1217-19 of the Basque University System, and of the project EDU2017-83949-P of the State Subprogram of Knowledge Generation of the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness of Spain.
