Emotion and language: valence and arousal affect word recognition
Emotion influences most aspects of cognition and behavior, but emotional factors are conspicuously absent from current models of word recognition. The influence of emotion on word recognition has mostly been reported in prior studies on the automatic vigilance for negative stimuli, but the precise nature of this relationship is unclear. Various models of automatic vigilance have claimed that the effect of valence on response times is categorical, an inverted U, or interactive with arousal. In the present study, we used a sample of 12,658 words and included many lexical and semantic control factors to determine the precise nature of the effects of arousal and valence on word recognition. Converging empirical patterns observed in word-level and trial-level data from lexical decision and naming indicate that valence and arousal exert independent monotonic effects: Negative words are recognized more slowly than positive words, and arousing words are recognized more slowly than calming words. Valence explained about 2% of the variance in word recognition latencies, whereas the effect of arousal was smaller. Valence and arousal do not interact, but both interact with word frequency, such that valence and arousal exert larger effects among low-frequency words than among high-frequency words. These results necessitate a new model of affective word processing whereby the degree of negativity monotonically and independently predicts the speed of responding. This research also demonstrates that incorporating emotional factors, especially valence, improves the performance of models of word recognition
A comparative study of marriage in honey bees optimisation (MBO) algorithm in multi-reservoir system optimisation
Contemporary reservoir systems often require operators to meet a variety of goals and objectives; these in turn frequently complicate water management decision-making. In addition, many reservoir objectives have non-linear relationships and are therefore difficult to implement using traditional optimisation techniques. A practical application of the marriage in honey bees optimisation (MBO) algorithm is being utilised for Karkheh multi-reservoir system, south-western Iran, where supplying irrigation water for agricultural areas and maintaining a minimum in-stream flow for environmental purposes is desired. Optimal monthly reservoir release information by MBO is highlighted and the results compared to those of other evolutionary algorithms, such as the genetic algorithm (GA), ant colony optimisation for continuous domains (ACOR), particle swarm optimisation (PSO) and elitist-mutation particle swarm optimisation (EMPSO). The results indicate the superiority of MBO over the algorithms tested. Keywords: non-linear optimisation, multi reservoir system, honey bee mating optimisation algorithm, evolutionary algorithms, meta-heuristic algorithm

The kinetics of selective oxidation of propene on bismuth vanadium molybdenum oxide catalysts
We report the results of a systematic investigation of the kinetics of propene oxidation to acrolein over Bi1-x/3V1-xMoxO4. BET isotherms were measured to determine catalyst surface area, and powder X-ray diffraction was used to characterize the bulk structure. Further characterization by X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) was used to determine the oxidation states of Bi, Mo, and V before and after exposure of the catalyst to propene at 713 K. We find that, contrary to previous discussions of the mechanism of propene oxidation on Bi1-x/3V1-xMoxO4, Bi remains in the 3+ state and only V and Mo undergo reduction and oxidation during reaction. The kinetics of propene oxidation were examined to establish the activation barrier for acrolein formation, and how the partial pressure dependences on propene and oxygen change with the value of x. The data obtained from this study were then used to propose a generalized model for the kinetics of propene oxidation over Bi1-x/3V 1-xMoxO4 that is consistent with our findings about the reducibility of the three metallic elements in the oxide. According to this model, vanadium and molybdenum are randomly distributed to form three types of sites each associated with its own rate parameters. MoV sites are found to exhibit the highest activity. The proposed model provides a good description of the experimental data for all catalyst formulations examined, for a range of propene and oxygen partial pressures, and for temperatures above 653 K. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Symbols of One-Loop Integrals From Mixed Tate Motives
We use a result on mixed Tate motives due to Goncharov
(arXiv:alg-geom/9601021) to show that the symbol of an arbitrary one-loop
2m-gon integral in 2m dimensions may be read off directly from its Feynman
parameterization. The algorithm proceeds via recursion in m seeded by the
well-known box integrals in four dimensions. As a simple application of this
method we write down the symbol of a three-mass hexagon integral in six
dimensions.Comment: 13 pages, v2: minor typos correcte
Preliminary study of online training implementation from multiple perspectives in Malaysian public sectors
In a constantly changing and evolving global and organizational environment, it is necessary to improve the skills of human resources. The innovation of information technologies nowadays has contributed to the exponential expansion in online training in Malaysia. The number employees attending online training courses have increased tremendously but very low percentage of course completion have been reported, thus raised many questions in the implementation of online training in Malaysian public sectors. This study was conducted to construct a research framework on online training implementation in Malaysian public sectors. The criteria of online training implementation are also being determined through different perception of stakeholders. Based on the literature review, the study posited four constructs adopted from Kirkpatrick’s learning theory through Multiple Perspectives Theory. The preliminary study conducted involves 3 set of interviews with respondents involved in providing online training at Malaysia’s National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN) as providers or consultants of public sectors online training. The preliminary findings showed that the criteria are applicable with the mentioned criteria in the literature review thus suitable to be mapped into the conceptual framework
Effet d'une complémentation azotée sur la pathologie de la trypanosomose animale africaine chez les moutons sahéliens
Effect of a Complementation Nitrogenized on the Pathology of Animal Trypanosomiasis at the Sahelian Sheeps.
One-point functions in massive integrable QFT with boundaries
We consider the expectation value of a local operator on a strip with
non-trivial boundaries in 1+1 dimensional massive integrable QFT. Using finite
volume regularisation in the crossed channel and extending the boundary state
formalism to the finite volume case we give a series expansion for the
one-point function in terms of the exact form factors of the theory. The
truncated series is compared with the numerical results of the truncated
conformal space approach in the scaling Lee-Yang model. We discuss the
relevance of our results to quantum quench problems.Comment: 43 pages, 20 figures, v2: typos correcte
