    Measuring of roundness of WPC materials after turning

    Natural fibers offer several advantages. They are renewable, inexpensive, can be used to isolate a sound and have got a low density. The disadvantages of these materials are: susceptibility to moisture, low fire resistance, and sensitivity to biodegradation. Their disadvantages are possible to eliminate by using of thermosetting and thermoplastic matrixes obtaining the plastics filled by organic fillers. Nowadays is preferred a usage of thermoplastic matrixes (especially in WPC product)

    Smart Rocks and Wireless Communication System for Real-Time Monitoring and Mitigation of Bridge Scour -- A Proof-of-Concept Study

    This study aims to integrate commercial measurement and communication components into a scour monitoring system with magnets or electronics embedded in smart rocks, and evaluate and improve its performance in laboratory and field conditions for the movement of smart rocks. Properly-designed smart rocks were found to be automatically rolled into the very bottom of a scour hole and can give critical information about the maximum scour depth and effectiveness of rip-rap mitigation strategies. Four types of smart rock technologies were investigated in this proof-of-concept phase of study, including passive with embedded magnets, active with magneto-inductive communication, active with controllable magnet rotation, and active with acoustic communication. Their performances were evaluated against three criteria: 1) movement accuracy within 0.5 m, 2) transmission distance between 5 and 30 m, and 3) at least one measurement every 15 minutes. Test results demonstrated that the proposed smart rocks are cost-effective, viable technologies for bridge scour monitoring

    Extrapolation of Multiplicity distribution in p+p(\bar(p)) collisions to LHC energies

    The multiplicity (N_ch) and pseudorapidity distribution (dN_ch/d\eta) of primary charged particles in p+p collisions at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies of \sqrt(s) = 10 and 14 TeV are obtained from extrapolation of existing measurements at lower \sqrt(s). These distributions are then compared to calculations from PYTHIA and PHOJET models. The existing \sqrt(s) measurements are unable to distinguish between a logarithmic and power law dependence of the average charged particle multiplicity () on \sqrt(s), and their extrapolation to energies accessible at LHC give very different values. Assuming a reasonably good description of inclusive charged particle multiplicity distributions by Negative Binomial Distributions (NBD) at lower \sqrt(s) to hold for LHC energies, we observe that the logarithmic \sqrt(s) dependence of are favored by the models at midrapidity. The dN_ch/d\eta versus \eta for the existing measurements are found to be reasonably well described by a function with three parameters which accounts for the basic features of the distribution, height at midrapidity, central rapidity plateau and the higher rapidity fall-off. Extrapolation of these parameters as a function of \sqrt(s) is used to predict the pseudorapidity distributions of charged particles at LHC energies. dN_ch/d\eta calculations from PYTHIA and PHOJET models are found to be lower compared to those obtained from the extrapolated dN_ch/d\eta versus \eta distributions for a broad \eta range.Comment: 11 pages and 13 figures.     Concept of complications of reproductive aging in women for anti-aging therapy. Literature review

    Modern mankind, through the development of medicine and using its scientifically grounded innovations has learned to prolong human life. In Ukraine as in the whole world there is a tendency to increase in life expectancy. Since aging is a natural physiological process, a person from time immemorial has been preoccupied with the search for the so-called “Philosophy Stone” is a substance that prevents aging. This article analyzes data from scientific publications on modern aspects of the problems associated with aging of the female body. It has been proven that aging and anti-aging processes substantiate the individualization of modern approaches to the correction of pre- and perimenopause complications. The general strategy for maintaining of women’s health in peri- and postmenopause according to the International Menopause Society includes menopausal hormone therapy, taking into accounts the therapy goals and individual risk factors. Despite all the desire to give a modern definition of aging, it is currently not possible, therefore in this literature review an attempt is made to analyze the known strategies of premature aging to develop the potential for prolonging active life. In any case, the doctor needs to correlate the benefits and risks of menopausal hormone therapy, taking into account individual risk factors and select appropriate rehabilitation methods aimed at “improving the female face” of the classic image of old age. Since the role of estrogen deficiency in the formation of perimenopausal complications and especially premature aging, is not questioned, anti-aging strategies should be considered a pathogenetically justified method of treating vasomotor, psychosomatic symptoms and sleep disorders, as well as a method of preventing metabolic syndrome. It should be remembered that hormone therapy has a number of limitations and contraindications, which is an incentive for every doctor to contribute to prolongation of the active and healthy life of women 40+ and 50+ years old. Creation of a conceptual model for overcoming the complications of reproductive aging and especially cardiovascular events, osteoporosis, cerebrovascular pathology based on the identification of risk factors will allow to develop the protective anti-aging therapy not only to prolong a woman's life, but also to improve its qualit

    Charged-Particle Multiplicity in Proton-Proton Collisions

    This article summarizes and critically reviews measurements of charged-particle multiplicity distributions and pseudorapidity densities in p+p(pbar) collisions between sqrt(s) = 23.6 GeV and sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. Related theoretical concepts are briefly introduced. Moments of multiplicity distributions are presented as a function of sqrt(s). Feynman scaling, KNO scaling, as well as the description of multiplicity distributions with a single negative binomial distribution and with combinations of two or more negative binomial distributions are discussed. Moreover, similarities between the energy dependence of charged-particle multiplicities in p+p(pbar) and e+e- collisions are studied. Finally, various predictions for pseudorapidity densities, average multiplicities in full phase space, and multiplicity distributions of charged particles in p+p(pbar) collisions at the LHC energies of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, 10 TeV, and 14 TeV are summarized and compared.Comment: Invited review for Journal of Physics G -- version 2: version after referee's comment

    Conservation of co-evolved interactions: understanding the Maculinea–Myrmica complex

The six papers in this Special Issue of Insect Conservation and Diversity are presented as a gedenkschrift honouring ground‐breaking contributions made by the late Graham Elmes towards understanding the biology of Myrmica ants and their social parasites. 2. A common theme is that each research paper contributes new knowledge applicable to the future survival of Maculinea (= Phengaris) species of butterflies, which have become flagships for insect conservation across Europe. All Maculinea species are highly specialised, with larvae that feed briefly on a specific foodplant before living underground for 11–23 months as social parasites of Myrmica colonies. 3. This introductory overview provides a brief history of the research that has led to the current collection, with emphasis on Graham Elmes' life and work. It is followed by three research papers that illustrate the diversity, socio‐biology and ecology of Myrmica ants. A fourth describes an extreme adaptation that increases the efficiency with which some populations of Maculinea larvae exploit the resources within Myrmica nests. A fifth, more theoretical, paper models the constraints that typically lead to host specificity among social parasites and explores why host switches are rare and quick

    Blogging the Virtual: New Geographies of Domination and Resistance In and Beyond Russia

    Russia’s accelerating authoritarian turn has not ignored the internet, and in recent years, the Russian state has clamped down on internet activities that diverge from the statist line, employing a variety of strategies to dominate online spaces. Nevertheless, oppositional voices flourish on the Russian internet, taking shape in independent blogs and videos. This paper explores three political bloggers through surveillant and resistance assemblages, making sense of this contestation through an interpretation of the Deleuzian virtual that underscores the emancipatory potential of online activities for producing more egalitarian configurations, but also taking stock of the ways that these technologies have increased domination. Encompassing the blurriness between digital and corporeal spaces, the paper contributes by revealing new geographies of contestation against state strategies to dominate the Russian internet. Overlapping with but not corresponding to Russian territorial boundaries, these dynamics highlight shifting spaces of power and resistance in the increasingly illiberal world

    National records of 3000 European bee and hoverfly species: A contribution to pollinator conservation

    Pollinators play a crucial role in ecosystems globally, ensuring the seed production of most flowering plants. They are threatened by global changes and knowledge of their distribution at the national and continental levels is needed to implement efficient conservation actions, but this knowledge is still fragmented and/or difficult to access. As a step forward, we provide an updated list of around 3000 European bee and hoverfly species, reflecting their current distributional status at the national level (in the form of present, absent, regionally extinct, possibly extinct or non-native). This work was attainable by incorporating both published and unpublished data, as well as knowledge from a large set of taxonomists and ecologists in both groups. After providing the first National species lists for bees and hoverflies for many countries, we examine the current distributional patterns of these species and designate the countries with highest levels of species richness. We also show that many species are recorded in a single European country, highlighting the importance of articulating European and national conservation strategies. Finally, we discuss how the data provided here can be combined with future trait and Red List data to implement research that will further advance pollinator conservation
