    Perennial ryegrass pastures, which are the mainstay of dairy feeding systems in southern Australia, are characterised by strong spring growth, little summer/autumn growth, and poor persistence. These limitations impose costs to farm businesses through the purchase of additional fodder to fill feed gaps, and regular re-sowing of pastures. The objective of the research reported here was to investigate the potential for alternative pasture types with different seasonal growth characteristics to improve the seasonal distribution of feed supply and overcome some of the limitations associated with perennial ryegrass

    Development of a life cycle assessment tool for the assessment of food production systems within the energy, water and food nexus

    © 2015 The Institution of Chemical Engineers.As the demand for services and products continues to increase in light of rapid population growth, the question of energy, water and food (EWF) security is of increasing importance. The systems representing the three resources are intrinsically connected and, as such, there is a need to develop assessment tools that consider their interdependences. Specifically when evaluating the environmental performance of a food production system, it is necessary to understand its life cycle. The objective of this paper is to introduce an integrated energy, water and food life cycle assessment tool that integrates EWF resources in one robust model and at an appropriate resolution. The nexus modelling tool developed is capable of providing an environmental assessment for food production systems utilising a holistic systems approach as described by a series of subsystems that constitute each of the EWF resources. A case study set in Qatar and characterised by an agriculture sub-system, which includes the production and application of fertilisers and the raising of livestock, a water sub-system represented by mechanical and thermal desalination processes and an energy sub-system, which includes fossil fuel in the form of combined cycle natural gas based energy production and solar renewable energy is used to illustrate the model function. For the nexus system analysed it is demonstrated that the food system is the largest contributor to global warming. The GWP can be reduced by up to 30% through the utilisation of solar energy to substitute fossil fuels, which, however, comes with a significant requirement for land investment

    Evidence from Ab Initio and Transport Modeling for Diffusion-Driven Zirconium Isotopic Fractionation in Igneous Rocks

    We use density functional theory to calculate the equilibrium isotopic fractionation factors of zirconium (Zr) in a variety of minerals including zircon, baddeleyite, Ca-catapleiite, ilmenite, geikielite, magnetite, apatite, K-feldspar, quartz, olivine, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, amphibole, and garnet. We also report equilibrium isotopic fractionation factors for Hf in zircons, Ca-catapleiite, and ilmenite. These calculations show that coordination environment is an important control on Zr and Hf isotopic fractionation, with minerals with Zr and Hf in low coordinations predicted to be enriched in the heavy isotopes of Zr and Hf, relative to those with Zr and Hf in high coordinations. At equilibrium, zircon, which hosts Zr and Hf in 8-fold coordination, is predicted to have low 94Zr/90Zr and 179Hf/177Hf ratios compared to silicate melt, which hosts Zr and Hf in 6-fold coordination. However, our modeling results indicate that little equilibrium isotopic fractionation for Zr is expected during magmatic differentiation and zircon crystallization. We show through isotopic transport modeling that the Zr isotopic variations that were documented in igneous rocks are likely due to diffusion-driven kinetic isotopic fractionation. The two settings where this could take place are (i) diffusion-limited crystallization of zircon (DLC model) and (ii) diffusion-triggered crystallization of zircon (DTC model) in the boundary layer created by the growth of Zr-poor minerals. Fractional crystallization of zircons enriched in light Zr isotopes by diffusion can drive residual magmas toward heavy Zr isotopic compositions. Our diffusive transport model gives the framework to interpret Zr isotope data and gain new insights into the cooling history of igneous rocks and the setting of zircon crystallization

    The growth rate of traditional perennial ryegrass-based pastures commonly fails to meet herd feed requirements through winter and summer in non-irrigated dairy systems in southern Australia. Alternative pasture species can improve seasonal feed supply in this region (Tharmaraj & Chapman, 2005). However, the feeding value and milk production of these pastures must at least match perennial ryegrass if they are to be adopted successfully on dairy farms.     Infected Cell Killing by HIV-1 Protease Promotes NF-ÎşB Dependent HIV-1 Replication

    Acute HIV-1 infection of CD4 T cells often results in apoptotic death of infected cells, yet it is unclear what evolutionary advantage this offers to HIV-1. Given the independent observations that acute T cell HIV-1 infection results in (1) NF-ÎşB activation, (2) caspase 8 dependent apoptosis, and that (3) caspase 8 directly activates NF-ÎşB, we questioned whether these three events might be interrelated. We first show that HIV-1 infected T cell apoptosis, NF-ÎşB activation, and caspase 8 cleavage by HIV-1 protease are coincident. Next we show that HIV-1 protease not only cleaves procaspase 8, producing Casp8p41, but also independently stimulates NF-ÎşB activity. Finally, we demonstrate that the HIV protease cleavage of caspase 8 is necessary for optimal NF-ÎşB activation and that the HIV-1 protease specific cleavage fragment Casp8p41 is sufficient to stimulate HIV-1 replication through NF-ÎşB dependent HIV-LTR activation both in vitro as well as in cells from HIV infected donors. Consequently, the molecular events which promote death of HIV-1 infected T cells function dually to promote HIV-1 replication, thereby favoring the propagation and survival of HIV-1

    The SDSS-IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: selecting emission line galaxies using the Fisher discriminant

    We present a new selection technique of producing spectroscopic target catalogues for massive spectroscopic surveys for cosmology. This work was conducted in the context of the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), which will use ~200 000 emission line galaxies (ELGs) at 0.6<zspec<1.0 to obtain a precise baryon acoustic oscillation measurement. Our proposed selection technique is based on optical and near-infrared broad-band filter photometry. We used a training sample to define a quantity, the Fisher discriminant (linear combination of colours), which correlates best with the desired properties of the target: redshift and [OII] flux. The proposed selections are simply done by applying a cut on magnitudes and this Fisher discriminant. We used public data and dedicated SDSS spectroscopy to quantify the redshift distribution and [OII] flux of our ELG target selections. We demonstrate that two of our selections fulfil the initial eBOSS/ELG redshift requirements: for a target density of 180 deg^2, ~70% of the selected objects have 0.6<zspec<1.0 and only ~1% of those galaxies in the range 0.6<zspec<1.0 are expected to have a catastrophic zspec estimate. Additionally, the stacked spectra and stacked deep images for those two selections show characteristic features of star-forming galaxies. The proposed approach using the Fisher discriminant could, however, be used to efficiently select other galaxy populations, based on multi-band photometry, providing that spectroscopic information is available. This technique could thus be useful for other future massive spectroscopic surveys such as PFS, DESI, and 4MOST.Comment: Version published in A&

    Highly effective liquid and solid phase extraction methods to concentrate radioiodine isotopes for radioiodination chemistry

    Radioactive iodine isotopes play a pivotal role in radiopharmaceuticals. Large-scale production of multi-patient dose of radioiodinated nuclear medicines requires high concentration of radioiodine. We demonstrate that tetrabutylammonium chloride and methyltrioctylamonium chloride are effective phase transfer reagents to concentrate iodide-124, iodide-125 and iodide-131 from the corresponding commercial water solutions. The resulting concentrated radioiodide, in the presence of either phase transfer reagent, does not hamper the chemical reactivity of aqueous radioiodide in the copper (II)-mediated one-pot three-component click chemistry to produce radioiodinated iodotriazoles
