    Community Norms and Organizational Practices: The Legitimization of Wage Arrears in Russia, 1992-1999

    What role do community norms play in the diffusion and persistence of new organizational practices? We explore this question through an examination of the widespread practice of wage arrears, the late and nonpayment of wages, in Russia during the 1990s. Existing research on wage arrears most often examines this practice as a means of flexible wage adjustment under difficult economic conditions. We develop an alternative theory that explains wage arrears through their acceptance as a legitimate form of organizational behavior within local communities. Our empirical analysis finds some support for the neoclassical position that wage arrears reflect adjustment to negative shocks, but this perspective fails to account for a number of important facts, including a high level of arrears among apparently successful firms. In contrast, our results find strong support for the institutional perspective. The statistical analysis demonstrates powerful and robust community effects both in firm adoption of this practice, controlling for firm performance, liquidity, and fixed firm effects, and in workers' reaction to arrears, through their quit (exit) and strike (voice) behavior.institutions, norms, legitimacy, arrears, organizational practices, sociology, Russia

    HeartCV: a tool for transferrable, automated measurement of heart rate and heart rate variability in transparent animals.

    Heart function is a key component of whole-organismal physiology. Bioimaging is commonly, but not exclusively, used for quantifying heart function in transparent individuals, including early developmental stages of aquatic animals, many of which are transparent. However, a central limitation of many imaging-related methods is the lack of transferability between species, life-history stages and experimental approaches. Furthermore, locating the heart in mobile individuals remains challenging. Here, we present HeartCV: an open-source Python package for automated measurement of heart rate and heart rate variability that integrates automated localization and is transferrable across a wide range of species. We demonstrate the efficacy of HeartCV by comparing its outputs with measurements made manually for a number of very different species with contrasting heart morphologies. Lastly, we demonstrate the applicability of the software to different experimental approaches and to different dataset types, such as those corresponding to longitudinal studies

    Some of the universal characteristics of pre-agricultural hominin diets are strikingly different from the modern human diet. Hominin dietary choices were limited to wild plant and wild animal foods, while the modern diet includes more than 70 % of energy consumed from refined sugars, refined vegetable oils, and highly processed cereals and dairy products. The modern diet, with higher intake of fat has also resulted in a higher ratio of omega-6 (n-6) to omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), contributing to low-grade chronic inflammation (LGCI) and thus promoting the development of many chronic diseases, including obesity and osteoporosis. In this review, we describe the changes in modern diet, focusing on the kind and amount of consumed fat; explain the shortcomings of the modern diet with regard to inflammatory processes; and delineate the reciprocity between adiposity and inflammatory processes, with inflammation being a common link between obesity and osteoporosis. We present the evidence that overconsumption of n-6 PUFA coupled with under-consumption of n-3 PUFA results in LGCI and, along with the increased presence of reactive oxygen species, leads to a shift in mesenchymal stem cells (precursors for both osteoblasts and adipocytes) lineage commitment toward increased adipogenesis and suppressed osteoblastogenesis. In turn, high n-6 to n-3 PUFA ratios in the modern diet, coupled with increased synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines due to adiposity, propagate obesity and osteoporosis by increasing or maintaining LGCI.Pojedina univerzalna svojstva prehrane hominina prije pojave poljodjelstva izrazito se razlikuju od suvremene prehrane. Prehrambene navike hominina vjerojatno su bile ograničene na plodove divljeg bilja i lovinu; više od 70 % moderne prehrane odnosi se na konzumaciju rafiniranih šećera, biljnih ulja, žitarica i mliječnih prerađevina. Moderna je prehrana s višim unosom masti također dovela do nepovoljnijeg omjera omega-6 i omega-3 višestruko nezasićenih masnih kiselina (engl. krat. PUFA), koji pridonosi održavanju kronične upale niskoga stupnja, a time i nastanku mnogih kroničnih bolesti, uključujući pretilost i osteoporozu. U ovom se preglednom članku opisuju promjene uslijed modernog načina prehrane, s posebnim osvrtom na vrste i količine konzumirane masti. Također se objašnjavaju nedostatci moderne prehrane s obzirom na upalne procese te međusobna povezanost između pretilosti i upalnih procesa, koji su usto i poveznica između pretilosti i osteoporoze. U članku se iznose saznanja o tome da pretjerana konzumacija omega-6 masnih kiselina uz nedostatnu konzumaciju omega-3 masnih kiselina dovodi do kronične upale niskoga stupnja i povišenih vrijednosti reaktivnih kisikovih čestica (ROS), a time i do pomaka u mezenhimskih matičnih stanica (prekursora osteoblasta i adipocita) prema povećanoj adipogenezi i smanjenoj osteoblastogenezi. Uz povećanu sintezu upalnih citokina zbog pretilosti, moderna prehrana s nepovoljnim omjerom omega-6 i omega-3 kiselina u korist prvih nastavlja poticati pretilost i osteoporozu jer održava i pogoršava kroničnu upalu

    HOX transcription factors are potential targets and markers in malignant mesothelioma

    YesBackground The HOX genes are a family of homeodomain-containing transcription factors that determine cellular identity during development and which are dys-regulated in some cancers. In this study we examined the expression and oncogenic function of HOX genes in mesothelioma, a cancer arising from the pleura or peritoneum which is associated with exposure to asbestos. Methods We tested the sensitivity of the mesothelioma-derived lines MSTO-211H, NCI-H28, NCI-H2052, and NCI-H226 to HXR9, a peptide antagonist of HOX protein binding to its PBX co-factor. Apoptosis was measured using a FACS-based assay with Annexin, and HOX gene expression profiles were established using RT-QPCR on RNA extracted from cell lines and primary mesotheliomas. The in vivo efficacy of HXR9 was tested in a mouse MSTO-211H flank tumor xenograft model. Results We show that HOX genes are significantly dysregulated in malignant mesothelioma. Targeting HOX genes with HXR9 caused apoptotic cell death in all of the mesothelioma-derived cell lines, and prevented the growth of mesothelioma tumors in a mouse xenograft model. Furthermore, the sensitivity of these lines to HXR9 correlated with the relative expression of HOX genes that have either an oncogenic or tumor suppressive function in cancer. The analysis of HOX expression in primary mesothelioma tumors indicated that these cells could also be sensitive to the disruption of HOX activity by HXR9, and that the expression of HOXB4 is strongly associated with overall survival. Conclusion HOX genes are a potential therapeutic target in mesothelioma, and HOXB4 expression correlates with overall survival.The authors gratefully acknowledge the support of the British Lung Foundation, grant number ICAPPG10-1.     Photoemission studies of high temperature superconductors

    Photoemission studies have been performed on all classes of high temperature superconductors except the Tl‐related compounds. Particular attention was paid to the surface cleanliness. Comparison with band calculation shows that the one‐electron picture cannot adequately explain the electronic structure of this type of materials. Most important, Cu satellites were observed both in the valence band and the Cu 2p core level for all the samples studied, signaling the importance of the d‐d correlation effects. the Cu 3d character of these satellites in the valence band was verified using resonance photoemission. The results have been interpreted in terms of a cluster model derived from the two band Anderson Hamiltonian, which in the past has been used successfully to describe the electronic structure of highly correlated systems. No clear satellite structure was observed in the O 1s core spectrum, which is consistent with the band‐like nature of the oxygen states. Examples of changes in the electronic structure, which could be related to Tc, (such as substituting Y by Pr in the Y‐Ba‐Cu‐O system and altering the number of Cu‐O layers in the Bi‐Ca‐Sr‐Cu‐O system), are also discussed.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/87348/2/330_1.pd

    Spectral phenotyping of embryonic development reveals integrative thermodynamic responses

    Abstract Background Energy proxy traits (EPTs) are a novel approach to high dimensional organismal phenotyping that quantify the spectrum of energy levels within different temporal frequencies associated with mean pixel value fluctuations from video. They offer significant potential in addressing the phenotyping bottleneck in biology and are effective at identifying lethal endpoints and measuring specific functional traits, but the extent to which they might contribute additional understanding of the phenotype remains unknown. Consequently, here we test the biological significance of EPTs and their responses relative to fundamental thermodynamic principles. We achieve this using the entire embryonic development of Radix balthica, a freshwater pond snail, at different temperatures (20, 25 &amp; 30 °C) and comparing responses against predictions from Arrhenius’ equation (Q10 = 2). Results We find that EPTs are thermally sensitive and their spectra of frequency response enable effective high-dimensional treatment clustering throughout organismal development. Temperature-specific deviation in EPTs from thermodynamic predictions were evident and indicative of physiological mitigation, although they differed markedly in their responses from manual measures. The EPT spectrum was effective in capturing aspects of the phenotype predictive of biological outcomes, and suggest that EPTs themselves may reflect levels of energy turnover. Conclusions Whole-organismal biology is incredibly complex, and this contributes to the challenge of developing universal phenotyping approaches. Here, we demonstrate the biological relevance of a new holistic approach to phenotyping that is not constrained by preconceived notions of biological importance. Furthermore, we find that EPTs are an effective approach to measuring even the most dynamic life history stages. </jats:sec

    Soft X-ray analysis of a loop flare on the Sun

    We present the results of an analysis of soft X-ray images for a solar flare which occurred on 1992 July 11. This flare, as seen in Yohkoh Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) images was of comparatively simple geometry, consisting of two bright footpoints early in the flare with a bright loop seen later in the flare. We examine how closely this flare compares with the supposed paradigm of a confined simple-loop flare. Closer examination of the SXT images reveals that the flare structure consisted of at least two adjacent loops, one much fainter than the other. We examine the brighter of the two soft X-ray loops. The SXT images reveal an apparent slow, northward motion of this loop (roughly transverse to its major axis). Examination of derived emission measure and temperature images also indicate an apparent northward motion. In addition, we find an increase in the cross-sectional width at the top of the loop with time. Emission measure maps derived from the SXT images also indicates an apparent broadening of the loop-top region. We infer that the apparent northward motion and the apparent broadening of the soft X-ray emission can be explained in a reconnection scenario where successive magnetic field structures do not lie in a plane but are tilted to the south of the line of sight but with successively brightening loops oriented at less tilted angles. Halpha images for this flare reveal an evolution from a few brilliant points to a short two- ribbon-like appearance. Comparison of the SXT images with the Halpha images shows that the Halpha patches are aligned with the footpoints of the soft X-ray loops, suggesting the presence of a small arcade structure. There is no clear evidence for an eruptive signature in our observations nor in reports from other observations. The lack of an eruptive signature could suggest that the flare may have been a confined simple-loop flare, but this is not compelling due to a gap in the coronal observations prior to and early in the event. Analysis of our observations indicate that the flare exhibited characteristics suggesting that it may be better understood as a mini-arcade flare. These results casts doubt on the validity of the supposed paradigm of a confined simple-loop flare, at least for this flare. They indicate that even an apparently simple-loop flare may be considered to be a variety of arcade flare. We also find an effect which, to our knowledge, has not been reported before: the hot flaring regions later become cooler than the surrounding quiescent corona. That is, the flare loops do not evolve into bright active region loops, but into cooler loops. This may indicate an increase in the efficiency of the cooling mechanism or a transformed equilibrium state within the flaring loops
