    Theoretical Study of the Pseudomonic and Monic Acids

    The drug Mupirocin has shown positive effects against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria with varying levels of success. It has been shown to be effective against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureas (MRSA) as a topical treatment in high concentrations. Mupirocin is comprised of pseudomonic acids. The monic acids are structurally similar to the pseudomonic acids and thus function as a good model to better understand the chemical characteristics of the drug. This work presents results of DFT (B3LYP) calculations with an accurate basis set on monic acid A and related species with focus on internal rotation barriers, optimal geometries, IR and Raman spectra, and electrostatic potentials to identify the differences between the monic and pseudomonic acids with an eye towards potential antibacterial treatments

    Wear and friction of TiAlN/VN coatings against Al2O3 in air at room and elevated temperatures

    TiAlN/VN multilayer coatings exhibit excellent dry sliding wear resistance and low friction coefficient, reported to be associated with the formation of self-lubricating V2O5. To investigate this hypothesis, dry sliding ball-on-disc wear tests of TiAlN/VN coatings on flat stainless steel substrates were undertaken against Al2O3 at 25 C, 300 C and 635 C in air. The coating exhibited increased wear rate with temperature. The friction coefficient was 0.53 at 25 C, which increased to 1.03 at 300 C and decreased to 0.46 at 635 C. Detailed investigation of the worn surfaces was undertaken using site-specific transmission electron microscopy (TEM) via focused ion beam (FIB) microscopy, along with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. Microstructure and tribo-induced chemical reactions at these temperatures were correlated with the coating’s wear and friction behaviour. The friction behaviour at room temperature is attributed to the presence of a thin hydrated tribofilm and the presence of V2O5 at high temperature

    No Far-Infrared-Spectroscopic Gap in Clean and Dirty High-TC_C Superconductors

    We report far infrared transmission measurements on single crystal samples derived from Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CaCu2_{2}O8_{8}. The impurity scattering rate of the samples was varied by electron-beam irradiation, 50MeV 16^{16}O+6^{+6} ion irradiation, heat treatment in vacuum, and Y doping. Although substantial changes in the infrared spectra were produced, in no case was a feature observed that could be associated with the superconducting energy gap. These results all but rule out ``clean limit'' explanations for the absence of the spectroscopic gap in this material, and provide evidence that the superconductivity in Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CaCu2_{2}O8_{8} is gapless.Comment: 4 pages and 3 postscript figures attached.     Observational evidence of spin-induced precession in active galactic nuclei

    We show that it is possible to explain the physical origin of jet precession in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) through the misalignment between the rotation axes of the accretion disk and of the Kerr black hole. We apply this scenario to quasars, Seyfert galaxies and also to the Galactic Center black hole Sgr A*, for which signatures of either jet or disk precession have been found. The formalism adopted is parameterized by the ratio of the precession period to the black hole mass and can be used to put constraints to the physical properties of the accretion disk as well as to the black hole spin in those systems.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

    Chandra Multiwavelength Project: Normal Galaxies at Intermediate Redshift

    (abridged) We have investigated 136 Chandra extragalactic sources without broad optical emission lines, including 93 galaxies with narrow emission lines (NELG) and 43 with only absorption lines (ALG). Based on fx/fo, Lx, X-ray spectral hardness and optical emission line diagnostics, we have conservatively classified 36 normal galaxies (20 spirals and 16 ellipticals) and 71 AGNs. We found no statistically significant evolution in Lx/LB, within the limited z range. We have built log(N)-log(S), after correcting for completeness based on a series of simulations. The best-fit slope is -1.5 for both S and B energy bands, which is considerably steeper than that of the AGN-dominated cosmic background sources, but slightly flatter than the previous estimate, indicating normal galaxies will not exceed the AGN population until fx ~ 2 x 10-18 erg s-1 cm-2 (a factor of ~5 lower than the previous estimate). A group of NELGs appear to be heavily obscured in X-rays, i.e., a typical type 2 AGN. After correcting for intrinsic absorption, their X-ray luminosities could be Lx > 10^44 erg s-1, making them type 2 quasar candidates. While most X-ray luminous ALGs (XBONG - X-ray bright, optically normal galaxy candidates) do not appear to be significantly absorbed, we found two heavily obscured objects, which could be as luminous as an unobscured broad-line quasar. Among 43 ALGs, we found two E+A galaxy candidates with strong Balmer absorption lines, but no [OII] line. The X-ray spectra of both galaxies are soft and one of them has a nearby close companion galaxy, supporting the merger/interaction scenario rather than the dusty starburst hypothesis.Comment: 31 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ (20 June 2006, v644), replaced with minor correction

    Thermal stability study of AlGaN/GaN MOS-HEMTs using Gd2O3 as gate dielectric

    Thermal stability of AlGaN/GaN MOS-HEMTs and -diodes using Gd_(2)O_(3) are investigated by means of different thermal cycles and storage tests up to 500ºC for one week. IV DC and pulsed characteristics of the devices before and after the processes are evaluated and compared with conventional HEMTs. Results show that the devices with Gd_(2)O_(3) dielectric layer have lower leakage current and a more stable behavior during thermal treatment processes compared with conventional devices. In fact, an excellent on/off ratio of about 108 and a stable V_(t) is observed after storage at high temperature. The beneficial effects of Gd_(2)O_(3) on trapping effects of MOS-HEMTs are also dis-cussed

    An R- and I-Band Photometric Variability Survey of the Cygnus OB2 Association

    We present a catalog of photometrically variable stars discovered within two 21'.3 X 21'.3 fields centered on the Cygnus OB2 association. There have hitherto been no deep optical variability studies of Cyg OB2 despite it being replete with early-type massive stars, perhaps due to the high and variable extinction (up to A_V ~ 20) that permeates much of the region. Here we provide results of the first variability study with this combination of spatial coverage (~ 0.5 deg) and photometric depth (R ~ 21 mag). We find 121 stars to be variable in both R- and I-band, 116 of them newly discovered. Of the 121 variables, we identify 27 eclipsing binaries (EBs) and eclipsing binary candidates, 20 potential Herbig Ae/Be stars, and 52 pulsating variables. Confirming both the status and the cluster membership of the Herbig Ae/Be stars would address the uncertainty regarding the age and star formation history of Cyg OB2. We match our catalog to known variables and binaries in the region, 2MASS near-IR (NIR) data, and Chandra X-ray observations to find counterparts to new variables in other wavelengths.Comment: 34 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Ap
