Determination of organic acids evolution during apple cider fermentation using an improved HPLC analysis method
An efficient method for analyzing ten organic acids in food, namely citric, pyruvic, malic, lactic, succinic, formic, acetic, adipic, propionic and butyric acids, using HPLC was developed. Boric acid was added into the mobile phase to separate lactic and succinic acids, and a post-column buffer solution [5 mmol/L p-toluensulfonic acid (p-TSA) + 20 mmol/L bis (2-hydroxyethyl) iminotris (hydroxymethyl) methane (bisÂżtris) + 100 Âżmol/L sodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic (EDTA-2Na)] was used to improve the sensitivity of detection. The average spiked recoveries for the ten organic acids ranged from 82.9 to 127.9% with relative standard deviations of 1.44Âż4.71%. The linear ranges of determination were from 15 to 1,000 mg/L with correlation coefficients of 0.9995Âż0.9999. The metabolism of organic acids in cider, and the effect of nutrients including diammonium phosphate (DAP), thiamine, biotin, niacinamide and pantothenic acid on their metabolism, were studied using this method of analysis. We found that before cider brewing, additions of 200 mg/L DAP and 0.3 mg/L thiamine to apple juice concentrate results in a high quality cider
Transverse Velocity Field Measurement in High-Resolution Solar Images Based on Deep Learning
To address the problem of the low accuracy of transverse velocity field
measurements for small targets in high-resolution solar images, we proposed a
novel velocity field measurement method for high-resolution solar images based
on PWCNet. This method transforms the transverse velocity field measurements
into an optical flow field prediction problem. We evaluated the performance of
the proposed method using the Ha and TiO datasets obtained from New Vacuum
Solar Telescope (NVST) observations. The experimental results show that our
method effectively predicts the optical flow of small targets in images
compared with several typical machine- and deep-learning methods. On the Ha
dataset, the proposed method improves the image structure similarity from
0.9182 to 0.9587 and reduces the mean of residuals from 24.9931 to 15.2818; on
the TiO dataset, the proposed method improves the image structure similarity
from 0.9289 to 0.9628 and reduces the mean of residuals from 25.9908 to
17.0194. The optical flow predicted using the proposed method can provide
accurate data for the atmospheric motion information of solar images. The code
implementing the proposed method is available on

Multiwavelength observations of a partially eruptive filament on 2011 September 8
In this paper, we report our multiwavelength observations of a partial
filament eruption event in NOAA active region 11283 on 2011 September 8. A
magnetic null point and the corresponding spine and separatrix surface are
found in the active region. Beneath the null point, a sheared arcade supports
the filament along the highly complex and fragmented polarity inversion line.
After being activated, the sigmoidal filament erupted and split into two parts.
The major part rose at the speeds of 90150 km s before reaching the
maximum apparent height of 115 Mm. Afterwards, it returned to the solar
surface in a bumpy way at the speeds of 2080 km s. The rising and
falling motions were clearly observed in the extreme-ultravoilet (EUV), UV, and
H wavelengths. The failed eruption of the main part was associated with
an M6.7 flare with a single hard X-ray source. The runaway part of the
filament, however, separated from and rotated around the major part for 1
turn at the eastern leg before escaping from the corona, probably along
large-scale open magnetic field lines. The ejection of the runaway part
resulted in a very faint coronal mass ejection (CME) that propagated at an
apparent speed of 214 km s in the outer corona. The filament eruption
also triggered transverse kink-mode oscillation of the adjacent coronal loops
in the same AR. The amplitude and period of the oscillation were 1.6 Mm and 225
s. Our results are important for understanding the mechanisms of partial
filament eruptions and provide new constraints to theoretical models. The
multiwavelength observations also shed light on space weather prediction.Comment: 46 pages, 17 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in Ap

Design Principles for High-Capacity Mn-Based Cation-Disordered Rocksalt Cathodes
Mn-based Li-excess cation-disordered rocksalt (DRX) oxyfluorides are promising candidates for next-generation rechargeable battery cathodes owing to their large energy densities, the earth abundance, and low cost of Mn. In this work, we synthesized and electrochemically tested four representative compositions in the Li-Mn-O-F DRX chemical space with various Li and F content. While all compositions achieve higher than 200 mAh gâ1 initial capacity and good cyclability, we show that the Li-site distribution plays a more important role than the metal-redox capacity in determining the initial capacity, whereas the metal-redox capacity is more closely related to the cyclability of the materials. We apply these insights and generate a capacity map of the Li-Mn-O-F chemical space, LixMn2-xO2-yFy (1.167 †x †1.333, 0 †y †0.667), which predicts both accessible Li capacity and Mn-redox capacity. This map allows the design of compounds that balance high capacity with good cyclability
Use of evidential reasoning and AHP to assess regional industrial safety
Chinaâs fast economic growth contributes to the rapid development of its urbanization process, and also renders a series of industrial accidents, which often cause loss of life, damage to property and environment, thus requiring the associated risk analysis and safety control measures to be implemented in advance. However, incompleteness of historical failure data before the occurrence of accidents makes it difficult to use traditional risk analysis approaches such as probabilistic risk analysis in many cases. This paper aims to develop a new methodology capable of assessing regional industrial safety (RIS) in an uncertain environment. A hierarchical structure for modelling the risks influencing RIS is first constructed. The hybrid of evidential reasoning (ER) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is then used to assess the risks in a complementary way, in which AHP is hired to evaluate the weight of each risk factor and ER is employed to synthesise the safety evaluations of the investigated region(s) against the risk factors from the bottom to the top level in the hierarchy. The successful application of the hybrid approach in a real case analysis of RIS in several major districts of Beijing (capital of China) demonstrates its feasibility as well as provides risk analysts and safety engineers with useful insights on effective solutions to comprehensive risk assessment of RIS in metropolitan cities. The contribution of this paper is made by the findings on the comparison of risk levels of RIS at different regions against various risk factors so that best practices from the good performer(s) can be used to improve the safety of the others
Quantum proof systems for iterated exponential time, and beyond
© 2019 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). Publication rights licensed to ACM. We show that any language solvable in nondeterministic time exp(exp(· · · exp(n))), where the number of iterated exponentials is an arbitrary function R(n), can be decided by a multiprover interactive proof system with a classical polynomial-time verifier and a constant number of quantum entangled provers, with completeness 1 and soundness 1 â exp(âC exp(· · · exp(n))), where the number of iterated exponentials is R(n) â 1 and C > 0 is a universal constant. The result was previously known for R = 1 and R = 2; we obtain it for any time-constructible function R. The result is based on a compression technique for interactive proof systems with entangled provers that significantly simplifies and strengthens a protocol compression result of Ji (STOCâ17). As a separate consequence of this technique we obtain a different proof of Slofstraâs recent result on the uncomputability of the entangled value of multiprover games (Forum of Mathematics, Pi 2019). Finally, we show that even minor improvements to our compression result would yield remarkable consequences in computational complexity theory and the foundations of quantum mechanics: first, it would imply that the class MIPâ contains all computable languages; second, it would provide a negative resolution to a multipartite version of Tsirelsonâs problem on the relation between the commuting operator and tensor product models for quantum correlations
Void fraction measurement of gas-liquid two-phase flow with a 12-electrode contactless resistivity array sensor under different excitation patterns
This work focuses on the void fraction measurement of gasâliquid two-phase flow by a 12-electrode contactless resistivity array sensor. Such a sensor, which can realize different excitation patterns, is developed here. Five different excitation patterns (with 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 electrodes) and three two-phase distributions (bubble flow, stratified flow and annular flow) are investigated. Two data processing approaches, the data average method and the principal component regression (PCR) method, are used to establish models of void fraction measurement and hence to implement it. Experiments on void fraction measurement are carried out with the 12-electrode contactless resistivity array sensor. The results show that the void fraction measurement performances are different under different excitation patterns. Among the five different excitation patterns studied, the one with five electrodes has the best performance and the absolute values of void fraction measurement errors of the three two-phase distributions are all less than 5.0% (using the data average method) and 3.0% (using the PCR method). Research results indicate that the 5-electrode excitation pattern + PCR combination is a new effective way to implement void fraction measurement of gasâliquid two-phase flow with the 12-electrode contactless resistivity array sensor.<br/
