Anomalous radiative transitions

Anomalous transitions involving photons derived by many-body interaction of the form, μGμ\partial_{\mu} G^{\mu}, in the standard model are studied. This does not affect the equation of motion in the bulk, but makes wave functions modified, and causes the unusual transition characterized by the time-independent probability. In the transition probability at a time-interval TT expressed generally in the form P=TΓ0+P(d)P=T \Gamma_0 +P^{(d)}, now with P(d)0 P^{(d)} \neq 0 . The diffractive term P(d)P^{(d)} has the origin in the overlap of waves of the initial and final states, and reveals the characteristics of waves. In particular, the processes of the neutrino-photon interaction ordinarily forbidden by Landau-Yang's theorem (Γ0=0\Gamma_0=0) manifests itself through the boundary interaction. The new term leads to physical processes over a wide energy range to have finite probabilities. New methods of detecting neutrinos using laser are proposed that are based on this difractive term, which enhance the detectability of neutrinos by many orders of magnitude.Comment: 47 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, typos correcte

    Coffee-induced Hypokalaemia

Taking an excess amount of caffeine (e.g. overdrinking caffeinated beverages) sometimes causes hypokalaemia. Although the detailed mechanism has not been clarified yet, an increased loss of potassium via the urine stream caused by the diuretic action of caffeine is proposed as one of the possibilities. We report the case of a 50-year-old female outpatient who rapidly developed severe generalized muscle weakness and fatigue. Her symptoms were considered to be principally due to hypokalaemia. Since her blood urea nitrogen concentration decreased greatly, it was suggested that she had massive polyuria due to overhydration (i.e. dilution of her body fluids). Initially, we considered that a urinary tract infection might have caused her illness. However, we found that she was a heavy coffee drinker and had constantly experienced massive diuresis. After a course of oral antibiotics, potassium replacement and stopping coffee (caffeine) ingestion, her symptoms resolved quickly. In conclusion, it was considered that overdrinking coffee (caffeine) induced her hypokalaemia. Probably, loss of potassium via the urine stream with secondary aldosteronism was the main cause of the hypokalaemia

Effects of the Zero-Mode Landau Level on Inter-Layer Magnetoresistance in Multilayer Massless Dirac Fermion Systems

We report on the experimental results of interlayer magnetoresistance in multilayer massless Dirac fermion system α\alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2_2I3_3 under hydrostatic pressure and its interpretation. We succeeded in detecting the zero-mode Landau level (n=0 Landau level) that is epected to appear at the contact points of Dirac cones in the magnetic field normal to the two-dimensional plane. The characteristic feature of zero-mode Landau carriers including the Zeeman effect is clearly seen in the interlayer magnetoresistance.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figure

Construction of a simple biocatalyst using psychrophilic bacterial cells and its application for efficient 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde production from glycerol

    Get PDF
Most whole cell biocatalysts have some problems with yields and productivities because of various metabolites produced as byproducts and limitations of substrate uptake. We propose a psychrophile-based simple biocatalyst for efficient bio-production using mesophilic enzymes expressed in psychrophilic Shewanella livingstonensis Ac10 cells whose basic metabolism was inactivated by heat treatment. The 45°C heat-treated cells expressing lacZ showed maximum beta-galactosidase activity as well as chloroform/SDS-treated cells to increase membrane permeability. The fluorescent dye 5-cyano-2,3-ditolyl-tetrazolium chloride staining indicated that most basic metabolism of Ac10 was lost by heat treatment at 45˚C for 10 min. The simple biocatalyst was applied for 3-HPA production by using Klebsiella pneumoniae dhaB genes. 3-HPA was stoichiometrically produced with the complete consumption of glycerol at a high production rate of 8.85 mmol 3-HPA/g dry cell/h. The amount of 3-HPA production increased by increasing the concentrations of biocatalyst and glycerol. Furthermore, it could convert biodiesel-derived crude glycerol to 3-HPA.We thank Professor Tatsuo Kurihara in Kyoto University for providing S. livingstonenesis Ac10-Rifr

The principal crop in Japan is rice and the early detection of disease is very important. However, because the leaves of the rice plant are very thin, it is extremely difficult to detect symptoms in an automatic diagnosis for plant disease. This study examined techniques for detecting rice blast, which causes serious damage to rice. Specifically, a virtual rice field was constructed and images were acquired first. Next an automatic generation technique for parameters that distinguish between recognized background and rice blast was developed. Genetic programming (GP) that combines shape features was introduced into this technique, and improvement and performance evaluation of the algorithm were carried out

Abstract

Background

To respond to the rapid surge in the incidence of suicide in Japan, which appears to be an ongoing trend, the Japanese Multimodal Intervention Trials for Suicide Prevention (J-MISP) have launched a multimodal community-based suicide prevention program, NOCOMIT-J. The primary aim of this study is to examine whether NOCOMIT-J is effective in reducing suicidal behavior in the community.

Methods/DesignThis study is a community intervention trial involving seven intervention regions with accompanying control regions, all with populations of statistically sufficient size. The program focuses on building social support networks in the public health system for suicide prevention and mental health promotion, intending to reinforce human relationships in the community. The intervention program components includes a primary prevention measures of awareness campaign for the public and key personnel, secondary prevention measures for screening of, and assisting, high-risk individuals, after-care for individuals bereaved by suicide, and other measures. The intervention started in July 2006, and will continue for 3.5 years. Participants are Japanese and foreign residents living in the intervention and control regions (a total of population of 2,120,000 individuals).

Discussion

The present study is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the community-based suicide prevention program in the seven participating areas.

Trial registration

UMIN Clinical Trials Registry (UMIN-CTR) UMIN000000460.</p

Formation of Zwitterionic Fullerodendron Using a New DBN-Focal Dendron

A new poly(amidoamine) dendron having 1,5-diazabicyclo[4.3.0]non-5-ene (DBN) at the focal point was synthesized. Interestingly, formation of zwitterionic fullerodendrons (λmax = 930 nm for C60 and 795 nm for C70) were observed by Vis-NIR spectroscopy upon the reaction of C60 or C70 with the DBN-focal dendron. In particular, the C70 anion was effectively stabilized by the site isolation effect of the dendritic wedge. The half-life of fullerodendron 12b having C70 anion at the focal point reaches 7,345 min, which is 20 times longer than that of complex between C60 and pristine DBN. Furthermore, in order to confirm the structure of the zwitterionic complex, fullerodendron 12a was reprecipitated from benzonitrile/1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, and was observed using IR spectroscopy and APPI-MS
