Enhancing the corrosion resistance of reinforcing steel under aggressive operational conditions using behentrimonium chloride

Aggressive operational conditions e.g. saline media and acidic gases, e.g., CO2 can increase the corrosion rate of reinforcing steel. Accordingly, the necessity to protect the steel under the above conditions without affecting the mechanical properties of the concrete is growing. Herein, the inhibition efficiency of a new corrosion inhibitor, behentrimonium chloride (BTC, C25H54ClN), is explored in a simulated-concrete pore solution (SCP) with 3.5 wt.% NaCl at different pH using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization methods. Using only a 50 ?mol L?1 of BTC, we are able to measure an inhibition efficiency of 91, 79, and 71% in SCP solution with 3.5% NaCl at pH of 12.5, 10 and 7, respectively without showing any effect on the mechanical properties on the cured mortars. Temkin isotherm is used to describe the physisorption of BTC inhibitor on the steel surface. Also, the adsorption and influence of the inhibitor on the metal surface are characterized using the scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In conclusion, this new inhibitor shows high corrosion inhibition efficiencies under different aggressive conditions and can be used in concrete to reduce the corrosion rate of reinforcing steel without decreasing the mechanical properties of the concrete. - 2019, The Author(s).The publication of this article was funded by the Qatar National Library.Scopu

Cancer detection using an electronic nose: A preliminary study on detection and discrimination of cancerous cells

Lack of effective tools to diagnose lung cancer at an early stage has caused high mortality in cancer patients especially in lung cancer patients. Electronic nose (E-Nose) technology is believed to offer non-invasive, rapid and reliable analytic approach by measuring the odour released from cancer to assist medical diagnosis. In this work, using a commercial E-nose (Cyranose-320), we aimed to detect the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by different types of cancerous cells. The lung cancer cell (A549) and breast cancer cell (MCF-7) were used for this study. Both cells were cultured using Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle’s Medium (DMEM) with 10% of Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) and incubated for three days. The static headspace of cell cultures and blank medium were directly sniffed by Cyranose-320. The preliminary results from this study showed that, the E-nose is able to detect and distinguish the presence of VOCs in cancerous cells with accuracy of 100% using LDA. To this end, the VOCs emitted from cancerous cells can potentially used as biomarker

Protocol for developing a core outcome set for male infertility research:an international consensus development study

Abstract STUDY QUESTION We aim to develop, disseminate and implement a minimum data set, known as a core outcome set, for future male infertility research. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Research into male infertility can be challenging to design, conduct and report. Evidence from randomized trials can be difficult to interpret and of limited ability to inform clinical practice for numerous reasons. These may include complex issues, such as variation in outcome measures and outcome reporting bias, as well as failure to consider the perspectives of men and their partners with lived experience of fertility problems. Previously, the Core Outcome Measure for Infertility Trials (COMMIT) initiative, an international consortium of researchers, healthcare professionals and people with fertility problems, has developed a core outcome set for general infertility research. Now, a bespoke core outcome set for male infertility is required to address the unique challenges pertinent to male infertility research. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION Stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, allied healthcare professionals, scientists, researchers and people with fertility problems, will be invited to participate. Formal consensus science methods will be used, including the modified Delphi method, modified Nominal Group Technique and the National Institutes of Health’s consensus development conference. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS An international steering group, including the relevant stakeholders outlined above, has been established to guide the development of this core outcome set. Possible core outcomes will be identified by undertaking a systematic review of randomized controlled trials evaluating potential treatments for male factor infertility. These outcomes will be entered into a modified Delphi method. Repeated reflection and re-scoring should promote convergence towards consensus outcomes, which will be prioritized during a consensus development meeting to identify a final core outcome set. We will establish standardized definitions and recommend high-quality measurement instruments for individual core outcomes. The ever-increasing cost of animal protein coupled with poor standard living in terms of per capital income in developing nation has necessitated the search for alternative sources of dietary protein. Two local varieties of calabash seeds were extracted using soxhlet method and n-hexane as refluxing solvent. The defatted cakes were subjected to Isoelectric precipitation to obtain protein concentrate which was characterized by analysing their moisture, ash, crude protein, crude fibre, available carbohydrate, water absorption capacity, oil absorption capacity, Foam capacity and stability and Bulk density. The results of the analysis revealed high amount of protein (69-70%) and also high water and Oil absorption capacities (84.6-134.1%) and (87.2-129.8%) respectively
