金沢大学大学院自然科学研究科生理活性物質科学金沢大学薬学部Novel 9-hydroxy-β-carboline derivatives were produced for the first time. A novel rearrangement reaction of 1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydro-9-hydroxy-β-carbolines was discovered to give 3, 3-disubstituted oxindoles, which was successfully applied to the total synthesis of (±)-coerulescine

AINTEGUMENTA homolog expression in Gnetum (gymnosperms) and implications for the evolution of ovulate axes in seed plants

金沢大学理工研究域自然システム学系The expression of GpANTL1, a homolog of AINTEGUMENTA (ANT) found in the gymnosperm Gnetum parvifolium, was analyzed by RT-PCR and in situ hybridization. GpANTL1 was expressed in the leaf primordia, root tips, and young ovules. In the ovulate axis, expression was detected as four distinct rings around the outer, middle, and inner envelope primordia as well as around the nucellar tip. This pattern of expression is similar to that of ANT in Arabidopsis thaliana. A comparison of the expression of GpANTL1 with that of PtANTL1 in the conifer Pinus thunbergii suggests that the integrated expression of PtANTL1 may have been caused by congenital fusion of the integument, ovuliferous scale, and bract. © 2008 The Author(s)

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of heat-killed Lactobacillus paracasei NFRI 7415 on kidney and bone in mice fed an ethanol-containing diet with stress. Eight-week-old Cril  :  CD1 mice were fed a control diet (CD), an alcohol diet (AD) (35.8% of total energy from ethanol), or an alcohol diet containing 20% heat-killed Lb. paracasei NFRI 7415 (107 CFU/g) (LD) for 4 weeks. Mice in the AD and LD groups also underwent restraint stress for two weeks from 13 days. The mice were placed in a 50 mL plastic tube, which had a small hole drilled around its base to allow ventilation, and restrained for 1 h every day. High final body weight was in the following order: CD, LD, and AD (p<0.05). The heat-killed Lb. paracasei NFRI 7415 lowered liver total cholesterol concentration and plasma glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) level. In addition, fecal bile acids of the LD group were higher than in the AD group (p<0.05). The glomerulus of the kidney in the AD group was observed to be more fibrotic than in the CD and LD groups with azan stain. Immunostaining confirmed that brown areas indicating the existence of mesangial cells were increased in the AD group, but not in the CD and LD groups. These results indicated that the heat-killed Lb. paracasei NFRI 7415 inhibited mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis by alcohol intake with stress

Expression patterns of class I KNOX and YABBY genes in Ruscus aculeatus (Asparagaceae) with implications for phylloclade homology

金沢大学大学院自然科学研究科生物多様性動態学金沢大学理学部STM (RaSTM) and YAB2 (RaYAB2) homologues were isolated from Ruscus aculeatus (Asparagaceae, monocots), and their expressions were analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to assess hypotheses on the evolutionary origin of the phylloclade in the Asparagaceae. In young shoot buds, RaSTM is expressed in the shoot apex, while RaYAB2 is expressed in the scale leaf subtending the shoot bud. This expression pattern is shared by other angiosperms, suggesting that the expression patterns of RaSTM and RaYAB2 are useful as molecular markers to identify the shoot and leaf, respectively. RaSTM and RaYAB2 are expressed concomitantly in phylloclade primordia. These results suggest that the phylloclade is not homologous to either the shoot or leaf, but that it has a double organ identity. © Springer-Verlag 2007

A Case of Primary Trabecular Carcinoid of the Ovary

A case of trabecular carcinoid originating in the left overy is presented. Clinically, no signs of carcinoid syndrome were noted. Various examinations including X-ray and CT, especially of gastrointestinal tracts and pelvic organs, revealed that the tumor mass is originated from the left ovary. Histologically, the resected tumor exhibited trabecular pattern of tumor cells, which contained numerous argentaffin and argyrophic granules. Immunostaining of NSE and calcitonin was strongly demonstrated in tumor cells. On ultrastructural examination, tumor cells had uniformly round shape granules, which were interpreted as neurosecretory granules. These findings clearly indicate that this neoplasm is primary trabecular carcinoid of the ovary
