Advanced Silicon-on-Insulator: Crystalline Silicon on Atomic Layer Deposited Beryllium Oxide
Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology improves the performance of devices by reducing parasitic capacitance. Devices based on SOI or silicon-on-sapphire technology are primarily used in high-performance radio frequency (RF) and radiation sensitive applications as well as for reducing the short channel effects in microelectronic devices. Despite their advantages, the high substrate cost and overheating problems associated with complexities in substrate fabrication as well as the low thermal conductivity of silicon oxide prevent broad applications of this technology. To overcome these challenges, we describe a new approach of using beryllium oxide (BeO). The use of atomic layer deposition (ALD) for producing this material results in lowering the SOI wafer production cost. Furthermore, the use of BeO exhibiting a high thermal conductivity might minimize the self-heating issues. We show that crystalline Si can be grown on ALD BeO and the resultant devices exhibit potential for use in advanced SOI technology applications
A stochastic model for heart rate fluctuations
Normal human heart rate shows complex fluctuations in time, which is natural,
since heart rate is controlled by a large number of different feedback control
loops. These unpredictable fluctuations have been shown to display fractal
dynamics, long-term correlations, and 1/f noise. These characterizations are
statistical and they have been widely studied and used, but much less is known
about the detailed time evolution (dynamics) of the heart rate control
mechanism. Here we show that a simple one-dimensional Langevin-type stochastic
difference equation can accurately model the heart rate fluctuations in a time
scale from minutes to hours. The model consists of a deterministic nonlinear
part and a stochastic part typical to Gaussian noise, and both parts can be
directly determined from the measured heart rate data. Studies of 27 healthy
subjects reveal that in most cases the deterministic part has a form typically
seen in bistable systems: there are two stable fixed points and one unstable

Optimization of distyryl-Bodipy chromophores for efficient panchromatic sensitization in dye sensitized solar cells
Cataloged from PDF version of article.Versatility of Bodipy (4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a, 4a-diaza-s-indacene) dyes was further expanded in recent dye-sensitized solar cell applications. Here we report a series of derivatives designed to address earlier problems in Bodipy sensitized solar cells. In the best case example, an overall efficiency of a modest 2.46% was achieved, but panchromatic nature of the dyes is quite impressive. This is the best reported efficiency in liquid electrolyte solar cells with Bodipy dyes as photosensitizers
Section Extension from Hyperbolic Geometry of Punctured Disk and Holomorphic Family of Flat Bundles
The construction of sections of bundles with prescribed jet values plays a
fundamental role in problems of algebraic and complex geometry. When the jet
values are prescribed on a positive dimensional subvariety, it is handled by
theorems of Ohsawa-Takegoshi type which give extension of line bundle valued
square-integrable top-degree holomorphic forms from the fiber at the origin of
a family of complex manifolds over the open unit 1-disk when the curvature of
the metric of line bundle is semipositive. We prove here an extension result
when the curvature of the line bundle is only semipositive on each fiber with
negativity on the total space assumed bounded from below and the connection of
the metric locally bounded, if a square-integrable extension is known to be
possible over a double point at the origin. It is a Hensel-lemma-type result
analogous to Artin's application of the generalized implicit function theorem
to the theory of obstruction in deformation theory. The motivation is the need
in the abundance conjecture to construct pluricanonical sections from flatly
twisted pluricanonical sections. We also give here a new approach to the
original theorem of Ohsawa-Takegoshi by using the hyperbolic geometry of the
punctured open unit 1-disk to reduce the original theorem of Ohsawa-Takegoshi
to a simple application of the standard method of constructing holomorphic
functions by solving the d-bar equation with cut-off functions and additional
blowup weight functions

Confucius computer: a philosophical digital agent for intergenerational philosophical play
Confucianism is commonly defined as “... a system of philosophical, ethical and political thought based on the teachings of Confucius,” which originated through the teachings of Confucius during the sixth-century BCE. It is a way of life or a philosophy of human nature that considers human relationships as the foundation of the society. Confucius teachings had highly influenced the development of several cultures in Asia, making Confucianism an intangible cultural heritage. In this paper, we are re-acquainting users with an intangible heritage that is part of their everyday, by developing a system that permits experiencing Confucius teachings virtually and interactively. The system can measure philosophical intent of the human and generate meaningful philosophical answers. It is also aimed for intergenerational sharing of Confucius heritage through a simple interactive process with the virtual sage making the experience enjoyable and entertaining. Previous research in natural language processing (NLP) mainly focused on the understanding and delivering of human natural language accurately. In this research, we explored how to apply NLP to model the knowledge and teachings of Confucius, through the natural conversation between human and computer. This virtual Confucius, a chat agent that generates outputs based on Confucius teachings, using a series of algorithms and techniques to improve the matching accuracy between user input and computer output, introduces a novel way of interacting with intangible cultures. Our user evaluation results revealed that there is a positive correlation between relevance and enjoyment, finding their experiences interacting with virtual Confucius very encouraging. Adults who participated in experiencing the virtual Confucius together with their children believed that this system has the potential to improve intergenerational interactions through shared play

Characteristics of cloud-nucleating aerosols in the Indian Ocean region
During the Indian Ocean Experiment (INDOEX), cloud droplets were collected and evaporated using a counterflow virtual impactor (CVI). The nonvolatile residual particles were then analyzed by various instruments. Physical and chemical properties of the below-cloud aerosol to evaluate which aerosol particles act as cloud nuclei in different environments, and their effects on cloud microphysics. Four cases, ranging from clean Southern Hemispheric clouds to heavily polluted clouds near India, were analyzed. For the cleaner clouds, droplet concentrations were much higher fraction of the available particle concentrations than for polluted clouds, but entertainment apparently acted to reduce droplet number concentrations in both regimes. For clean clouds the median critical supersaturation and size of the ambient particles and droplets residual particles were similar. In polluted clouds there were stringer differences between ambient and droplet residual distributions, and particles with lower critical supersaturations were favored as nuclei. Simple model calculations were used to show that polluted clouds are expected to achieve lower water supersaturations than clean clouds; thus only particles with relatively low critical supersaturations are likely to affect clouds in polluted regions. Soluble fractions for the ambient aerosol inferred from the size and cloud in polluted regions. Soluble fractions for the ambient aerosol inferred from the size and cloud condensation nuclei measurements were in general agreement with another study in the region. Droplet residual particles did not necessarily have higher soluble fractions than the ambient aerosol, but did tend to have higher total amounts of soluble per particle, particularly in the polluted cases
Leptin and Amylin Act in an Additive Manner to Activate Overlapping Signaling Pathways in Peripheral Tissues: In vitro and ex vivo studies in humans
OBJECTIVE: Amylin interacts with leptin to alter metabolism. We evaluated, for the first time, amylin- and/or leptin-activated signaling pathways in human peripheral tissues (hPTs). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Leptin and amylin signaling studies were performed in vitro in human primary adipocytes (hPAs) and human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (hPBMCs) and ex vivo in human adipose tissue (hAT) from male versus female subjects, obese versus lean subjects, and subjects with subcutaneous versus omental adipose tissue. RESULTS: The long form of leptin receptor was expressed in human tissues and cells studied in ex vivo and in vitro, respectively. Leptin and amylin alone and in combination activate signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), AMP-activated protein kinase, Akt, and extracellular signal-regulated kinase signaling pathways in hAT ex vivo and hPAs and hPBMCs in vitro; all phosphorylation events were saturable at leptin and amylin concentrations of ∼50 and ∼20 ng/ml, respectively. The effects of leptin and amylin on STAT3 phosphorylation in hPAs and hPBMCs in vitro were totally abolished under endoplasmic reticulum stress and/or in the presence of a STAT3 inhibitor. Results similar to those in the in vitro studies were observed in hAT studied ex vivo. CONCLUSIONS: Leptin and amylin activate overlapping intracellular signaling pathways in humans and have additive, but not synergistic, effects in signaling pathways studied in hPTs in vitro and ex vivo
