An entangled two photon source using biexciton emission of an asymmetric quantum dot in a cavity
A semiconductor based scheme has been proposed for generating entangled
photon pairs from the radiative decay of an electrically-pumped biexciton in a
quantum dot. Symmetric dots produce polarisation entanglement, but
experimentally-realised asymmetric dots produce photons entangled in both
polarisation and frequency. In this work, we investigate the possibility of
erasing the `which-path' information contained in the frequencies of the
photons produced by asymmetric quantum dots to recover polarisation-entangled
photons. We consider a biexciton with non-degenerate intermediate excitonic
states in a leaky optical cavity with pairs of degenerate cavity modes close to
the non-degenerate exciton transition frequencies. An open quantum system
approach is used to compute the polarisation entanglement of the two-photon
state after it escapes from the cavity, measured by the visibility of
two-photon interference fringes. We explicitly relate the two-photon visibility
to the degree of Bell-inequality violation, deriving a threshold at which
Bell-inequality violations will be observed. Our results show that an ideal
cavity will produce maximally polarisation-entangled photon pairs, and even a
non-ideal cavity will produce partially entangled photon pairs capable of
violating a Bell-inequality.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, submitted to PR
The role of Epstein-Barr virus in adults with bronchiectasis : A prospective cohort study
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is implicated in the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We aimed to determine whether EBV correlates with bronchiectasis severity, exacerbations, and progression. We collected induced sputum in healthy controls and spontaneous sputum at 3-6-month intervals and onset of exacerbations in bronchiectasis patients between March 2017 and October 2018. EBV DNA was detected with quantitative polymerase chain reaction. We collected 442 sputum samples from 108 bronchiectasis patients and 50 induced sputum samples from 50 healthy controls. When stable, bronchiectasis patients yielded higher detection rates of EBV DNA (48.1% vs 20.0%; P =.001), but not viral loads (mean log load, 4.45 vs 4.76; P =.266), compared with controls; 64.9% of patients yielded consistent detection status between 2 consecutive stable visits. Neither detection rate (40.8% vs 48.1%; P =.393) nor load (mean log load, 4.34 vs 4.45; P =.580) differed between the onset of exacerbations and stable visits, nor between exacerbations and convalescence. Neither detection status nor viral loads correlated with bronchiectasis severity. EBV loads correlated negatively with sputum interleukin-1β (P =.002), CXC motif chemokine-8 (P =.008), and tumor necrosis factor-α levels (P =.005). Patients initially detected with, or repeatedly detected with, EBV DNA had significantly faster lung function decline and shorter time to next exacerbations (both P .05). The EBV strains detected in bronchiectasis patients were phylogenetically homologous. Patients with detection of EBV DNA have a shorter time to bronchiectasis exacerbations. EBV may contribute to bronchiectasis progression
Determining the upper limit of Gamma_{ee} for the Y(4260)
By fitting the R values between 3.7 and 5.0 GeV measured by the BES
collaboration, the upper limit of the electron width of the newly discovered
resonance Y(4260) is determined to be 580 eV at 90% C.L. Together with the
BABAR measurement on the product of Gamma_{ee} and BR(Y(4260) --> pi+pi-
J/psi), this implies a large decay width of Y(4260) --> pi+pi- J/psi final
states.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Determinisitic Optical Fock State Generation
We present a scheme for the deterministic generation of N-photon Fock states
from N three-level atoms in a high-finesse optical cavity. The method applies
an external laser pulsethat generates an -photon output state while
adiabatically keeping the atom-cavity system within a subspace of optically
dark states. We present analytical estimates of the error due to amplitude
leakage from these dark states for general N, and compare it with explicit
results of numerical simulations for N \leq 5. The method is shown to provide a
robust source of N-photon states under a variety of experimental conditions and
is suitable for experimental implementation using a cloud of cold atoms
magnetically trapped in a cavity. The resulting N-photon states have potential
applications in fundamental studies of non-classical states and in quantum
information processing.Comment: 25 pages, 9 figure
Determination of the and Mixing Angle from the Pseudoscalar Transition Form Factors
The possible range of mixing angle is determined from the
transition form factors and with
the help of the present experimental data. For such purpose, the quark-flavor
mixing scheme is adopted and the pseudoscalar transition form factors are
calculated under the light-cone pQCD framework, where the transverse momentum
corrections and the contributions beyond the leading Fock state have been
carefully taken into consideration. We construct a phenomenological expression
to estimate the contributions to the form factors beyond the leading Fock state
based on their asymptotic behavior at and . By taking
the quark-flavor mixing scheme, our results lead to , where the first error coming from experimental
uncertainty and the second error coming from the uncertainties of the
wavefunction parameters. The possible intrinsic charm component in and
is discussed and our present analysis also disfavors a large portion of
intrinsic charm component in and , e.g. .Comment: 18 Pages, 3 figures. Several references added. To be published in

Computational Design and Optimisation of Pin Fin Heat Sinks with Rectangular Perforations
The benefits of using pin heat sinks (PHSs) with single, rectangular slotted or notched pin perforations, are explored computationally, using a conjugate heat transfer model. Results show that the heat transfer increases monotonically while the pressure drop decreases monotonically as the size of the rectangular perforation increases. Performance comparisons with PHSs with multiple circular perforations show favourable heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics. However, the reduced manufacturing complexity of rectangular notched pins in particular provide strong motivation for their use in practical applications. Detailed parameterisation and optimisation studies into the benefits of single rectangular notch perforations demonstrate the scope for improving heat transfer and reducing mechanical fan power consumption yet further by careful design of pin density and pin perforations in PHSs
