    Intrinsic distortion of a fully differential BD-modulated Class-D amplifier with analog feedback

    This paper presents a mathematical analysis of a fully differential BD-modulated Class-D amplifier with analog feedback, i.e., one having a bridge-tied-load output configuration with negative feedback and ternary PWM signal. Notwithstanding the highly nonlinear nature of the amplifier's operation, an extremely accurate closed-form expression for the audible output signal is derived and verified based on computer simulations. This expression demonstrates that there exist larger high-order intrinsic distortions (e.g., 5th-order harmonic distortion and intermodulation distortion) for BD-modulation, compared to that for AD-modulation (binary PWM signal). Furthermore, the 3rd-order harmonic distortion has a roughly parabolic response as a function of the magnitude of the input signal and reaches its peak when the modulation index of the input signal is around 0.7. Overall, the BD-modulated Class-D amplifier has a larger intrinsic distortion for small input signal but a smaller intrinsic distortion for large input signal, compared to AD-modulated designs

    Molecular beam epitaxy of highly mismatched N-rich GaNSb and InNAs alloys

    GaN materials alloyed with group V anions form the so-called highly mismatched alloys (HMAs). Recently, the authors succeeded in growing N-rich GaNAs and GaNBi alloys over a large composition range by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PA-MBE). Here, they present first results on PA-MBE growth and properties of N-rich GaNSb and InNAs alloys and compare these with GaNAs and GaNBi alloys. The enhanced incorporation of As and Sb was achieved by growing the layers at extremely low growth temperatures. Although layers become amorphous for high As, Sb, and Bi content, optical absorption measurements show a progressive shift of the optical absorption edge to lower energy. The large band gap range and controllable conduction and valence band positions of these HMAs make them promising materials for efficient solar energy conversion devices

    Relationship between traffic noise resistance and village form in China

    The aim of this study is to determine methods to reduce traffic noise levels and to enlarge quiet areas in the rural residential areas in China by controlling relative locations and urban morphological parameters. Six urban morphological parameters, including complete aspect ratio (CAR), landscape shape index of buildings (LSI_B), patch density (PD), road length fraction (RLF), road intersections fraction (RIF), and landscape shape index of roads (LSI_R), are selected and developed. The relationships of the urban morphological parameters to the spatial noise level attenuation and the size of noisy areas were subsequently determined. The effects of motorway horizontal distances and orientations are considered based on spatial traffic noise attenuation. The results indicate that the effect of distance on traffic noise level attenuation is significant and varies widely among the 60 sites studied. A distance of more than 600 m can make the acoustic environment suitable as residential areas. Changing the orientation relationship between the village and the motorway is not always effective for increasing the traffic noise resistance of villages. The results highlight the importance of using urban morphology to improve the traffic noise resistance of rural residential areas; LSI_B and LSI_ R are the most important parameters that correlate to the traffic noise attenuation of motorways

    Evolution of asexual and sexual reproduction in the aspergilli

    Aspergillus nidulans has long-been used as a model organism to gain insights into the genetic basis of asexual and sexual developmental processes both in other members of the genus Aspergillus, and filamentous fungi in general. Paradigms have been established concerning the regulatory mechanisms of conidial development. However, recent studies have shown considerable genome divergence in the fungal kingdom, questioning the general applicability of findings from Aspergillus, and certain longstanding evolutionary theories have been questioned. The phylogenetic distribution of key regulatory elements of asexual reproduction in A. nidulans was investigated in a broad taxonomic range of fungi. This revealed that some proteins were well conserved in the Pezizomycotina (e.g. AbaA, FlbA, FluG, NsdD, MedA, and some velvet proteins), suggesting similar developmental roles. However, other elements (e.g. BrlA) had a more restricted distribution solely in the Eurotiomycetes, and it appears that the genetic control of sporulation seems to be more complex in the aspergilli than in some other taxonomic groups of the Pezizomycotina. The evolution of the velvet protein family is discussed based on the history of expansion and contraction events in the early divergent fungi. Heterologous expression of the A. nidulans abaA gene in Monascus ruber failed to induce development of complete conidiophores as seen in the aspergilli, but did result in increased conidial production. The absence of many components of the asexual developmental pathway from members of the Saccharomycotina supports the hypothesis that differences in the complexity of their spore formation is due in part to the increased diversity of the sporulation machinery evident in the Pezizomycotina. Investigations were also made into the evolution of sex and sexuality in the aspergilli. MAT loci were identified from the heterothallic Aspergillus (Emericella) heterothallicus and Aspergillus (Neosartorya) fennelliae and the homothallic Aspergillus pseudoglaucus (=Eurotium repens). A consistent architecture of the MAT locus was seen in these and other heterothallic aspergilli whereas much variation was seen in the arrangement of MAT loci in homothallic aspergilli. This suggested that it is most likely that the common ancestor of the aspergilli exhibited a heterothallic breeding system. Finally, the supposed prevalence of asexuality in the aspergilli was examined. Investigations were made using A. clavatus as a representative ‘asexual’ species. It was possible to induce a sexual cycle in A. clavatus given the correct MAT1-1 and MAT1-2 partners and environmental conditions, with recombination confirmed utilising molecular markers.     Growth and properties of ferromagnetic In(1-x)Mn(x)Sb alloys

    We discuss a new narrow-gap ferromagnetic (FM) semiconductor alloy, In(1-x)Mn(x)Sb, and its growth by low-temperature molecular-beam epitaxy. The magnetic properties were investigated by direct magnetization measurements, electrical transport, magnetic circular dichroism, and the magneto-optical Kerr effect. These data clearly indicate that In(1-x)Mn(x)Sb possesses all the attributes of a system with carrier-mediated FM interactions, including well-defined hysteresis loops, a cusp in the temperature dependence of the resistivity, strong negative magnetoresistance, and a large anomalous Hall effect. The Curie temperatures in samples investigated thus far range up to 8.5 K, which are consistent with a mean-field-theory simulation of the carrier-induced ferromagnetism based on the 8-band effective band-orbital method.Comment: Invited talk at 11th International Conference on Narrow Gap Semiconductors, Buffalo, New York, U.S.A., June 16 - 20, 200

    Rail vehicle dynamic response to a nonlinear physical ‘in-service’ model of its secondary suspension hydraulic dampers

    A full nonlinear physical ‘in-service’ model was built for a rail vehicle secondary suspension hydraulic damper with shim-pack-type valves. In the modelling process, a shim pack deflection theory with an equivalent-pressure correction factor was proposed, and a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) approach was applied. Bench test results validated the damper model over its full velocity range and thus also proved that the proposed shim pack deflection theory and the FEA-based parameter identification approach are effective. The validated full damper model was subsequently incorporated into a detailed vehicle dynamics simulation to study how its key in-service parameter variations influence the secondary-suspension-related vehicle system dynamics. The obtained nonlinear physical in-service damper model and the vehicle dynamic response characteristics in this study could be used in the product design optimization and nonlinear optimal specifications of high-speed rail hydraulic dampers

    Fast and Scalable Solvers for the Fluid Pressure Equations with Separating Solid Boundary Conditions

Specifically, we present a policy iteration method, a penalty method, and a modified multigrid method, and demonstrate that each is able to properly handle the desired boundary conditions. Moreover, we compare our proposed methods against existing approaches and show that our solvers are more efficient and exhibit better scaling behavior; that is, the number of iterations required for convergence is essentially independent of grid resolution, and thus they are faster at larger grid resolutions. For example, on a 2563 grid our multigrid method was 30 times faster than the prior multigrid method in the literature

    Superconducting proximity effect in clean ferromagnetic layers

    We investigate superconducting proximity effect in clean ferromagnetic layers with rough boundaries. The subgap density of states is formed by Andreev bound states at energies which depend on trajectory length and the ferromagnetic exchange field. At energies above the gap, the spectrum is governed by resonant scattering states. The resulting density of states, measurable by tunneling spectroscopy, exhibits a rich structure, which allows to connect the theoretical parameters from experiments.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures (included

    Nonconstant electronic density of states tunneling inversion for A15 superconductors: Nb3Sn

    We re-examine the tunneling data on A15 superconductors by performing a generalized McMillan-Rowell tunneling inversion that incorporates a nonconstant electronic density of states obtained from band-structure calculations. For Nb3Sn, we find that the fit to the experimental data can be slightly improved by taking into account the sharp structure in the density of states, but it is likely that such an analysis alone is not enough to completely explain the superconducting tunneling characteristics of this material. Nevertheless, the extracted Eliashberg function displays a number of features expected to be present for the highest quality Nb3Sn samples.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure
