    Rational Expectation and Education Rewarding: The Case of Chinese Off-Farm Wage Employment

    This study establishes a life-cycle model that a representative agent chooses optimal time of education to maximize his/her life earning, which implies that there may exist nonlinear relation between education and earning. Using the data of Chinese off-farm wage employment, we find that the duration of schooling years will increase by 1.7 years with 1 percent increase in rate of return to education.     First-order reversal curve analysis of magnetoactive elastomers

    The first magnetization loop and the first stress–strain cycle of magnetoactive elastomers (MAEs) in a magnetic field differ considerably from the following loops and cycles, possibly due to the internal restructuring of the magnetic filler particles and the matrix polymer chains. In the present study, the irreversible magnetization processes during the first magnetization of MAEs with different filler compositions and tensile moduli of the matrix are studied by first-order reversal curve (FORC) measurements. For MAEs with mixed magnetic NdFeB/Fe fillers the FORC distributions and magnetization distributions of the first major loop reveal a complex irreversible magnetization behavior at interaction fields Hu 600 kA m−1

    Mapping Impervious Surface Using Phenology-Integrated and Fisher Transformed Linear Spectral Mixture Analysis

    The impervious surface area (ISA) is a key indicator of urbanization, which brings out serious adverse environmental and ecological consequences. The ISA is often estimated from remotely sensed data via spectral mixture analysis (SMA). However, accurate extraction of ISA using SMA is compromised by two major factors, endmember spectral variability and plant phenology. This study developed a novel approach that incorporates phenology with Fisher transformation into a conventional linear spectral mixture analysis (PF-LSMA) to address these challenges. Four endmembers, high albedo, low albedo, evergreen vegetation, and seasonally exposed soil (H-L-EV-SS) were identified for PF-LSMA, considering the phenological characteristic of Shanghai. Our study demonstrated that the PF-LSMA effectively reduced the within-endmember spectral signature variation and accounted for the endmember phenology effects, and thus well-discriminated impervious surface from seasonally exposed soil, enhancing the accuracy of ISA extraction. The ISA fraction map produced by PF-LSMA (RMSE = 0.1112) outperforms the single-date image Fisher transformed unmixing method (F-LSMA) (RMSE = 0.1327) and the other existing major global ISA products. The PF-LSMA was implemented on the Google Earth Engine platform and thus can be easily adapted to extract ISA in other places with similar climate conditions.Peer Reviewe

    Advancements and future prospects of adeno-associated virus-mediated gene therapy for sensorineural hearing loss

    Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), a highly prevalent sensory impairment, results from a multifaceted interaction of genetic and environmental factors. As we continually gain insights into the molecular basis of auditory development and the growing compendium of deafness genes identified, research on gene therapy for SNHL has significantly deepened. Adeno-associated virus (AAV), considered a relatively secure vector for gene therapy in clinical trials, can deliver various transgenes based on gene therapy strategies such as gene replacement, gene silencing, gene editing, or gene addition to alleviate diverse types of SNHL. This review delved into the preclinical advances in AAV-based gene therapy for SNHL, spanning hereditary and acquired types. Particular focus is placed on the dual-AAV construction method and its application, the vector delivery route of mouse inner ear models (local, systemic, fetal, and cerebrospinal fluid administration), and the significant considerations in transforming from AAV-based animal model inner ear gene therapy to clinical implementation

    Sharpening Low-Energy, Standard-Model Tests via Correlation Coefficients in Neutron Beta-Decay

    The correlation coefficients a, A, and B in neutron beta-decay are proportional to the ratio of the axial-vector to vector weak coupling constants, g_A/g_V, to leading recoil order. With the advent of the next generation of neutron decay experiments, the recoil-order corrections to these expressions become experimentally accessible, admitting a plurality of Standard Model (SM) tests. The measurement of both a and A, e.g., allows one to test the conserved-vector-current (CVC) hypothesis and to search for second-class currents (SCC) independently. The anticipated precision of these measurements suggests that the bounds on CVC violation and SCC from studies of nuclear beta-decay can be qualitatively bettered.     Randomized Comparison of a Polymer-Free Sirolimus-Eluting Stent Versus a Polymer-Based Paclitaxel-Eluting Stent in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus The LIPSIA Yukon Trial

    ObjectivesThe objective of the study was to assess noninferiority of the polymer-free sirolimus-eluting Yukon Choice stent (Translumina GmbH, Hechingen, Germany) compared with the polymer-based Taxus Liberté stent (Boston Scientific, Natick, Massachusetts) with regard to the primary endpoint, in-stent late lumen loss, at 9 months in patients with diabetes mellitus.BackgroundThe Yukon Choice stent has been evaluated in several randomized controlled trials before, albeit to date, there has been no trial that exclusively enrolled patients with diabetes mellitus.MethodsPatients with diabetes mellitus undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention for clinically significant de novo coronary artery stenosis were randomized 1:1 to receive either the polymer-free sirolimus-eluting Yukon Choice stent or the polymer-based paclitaxel-eluting Taxus Liberté stent.ResultsA total of 240 patients were randomized. Quantitative coronary angiography was available for 79% of patients. Mean in-stent late lumen loss was 0.63 ± 0.62 mm for the Yukon Choice stent and 0.45 ± 0.60 mm for the Taxus Liberté stent. Based on the pre-specified margin, the Yukon Choice stent failed to show noninferiority for the primary endpoint. During follow-up, there were no significant differences between groups regarding death, myocardial infarction, stent thrombosis, target lesion revascularization, target vessel revascularization, or nontarget vessel revascularization.ConclusionsCompared with the Taxus Liberté stent, the polymer-free sirolimus-eluting Yukon Choice stent failed to show noninferiority with regard to the primary endpoint, in-stent late lumen loss, in patients with diabetes mellitus after 9-month follow-up.
