    Effective Capacity Analysis over Generalized Composite Fading Channels

    A performance analysis of the effective capacity in two recently proposed generalized composite fading channels, namely \kappa - \mu /inverse gamma and \eta - \mu /inverse gamma composite fading channels, is conducted. To this end, accurate analytic expressions for the effective capacity are derived along with simple tight bound representations. Additionally, simple approximate expressions at the high average signal-to-noise ratio regime are also provided. The effective capacity is then analyzed for different delay constraint, multipath fading and shadowing conditions. The numerical results show that the achievable spectral efficiency lessens as the multipath fading and shadowing parameters decrease (i.e., severe multipath fading and heavy shadowing become prevalent) or the delay constraint increases. The accuracy and tightness of the proposed bounds is demonstrated and approximate representations are also provided to verify their usefulness. Furthermore, our numerical results are validated through a careful comparison with the simulated results.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

    Transepithelial Phototherapeutic Keratectomy Using a 213-nm Solid-State Laser System Followed by Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking with Riboflavin and UVA Irradiation

    Purpose. To present a case of a keratoconic patient who underwent epithelial removal with transepithelial phototherapeutic keratectomy (t-PTK) using a 213-nm solid-state laser system followed by corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) with riboflavin and ultraviolet-A (UVA) irradiation. Methods. Case report. Results. A twenty-four-year-old male with keratoconus underwent CXL treatment after epithelial removal with t-PTK using a solid-state laser system. No intra- or early postoperative complications were found. One month postoperatively, uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) improved from 20/63 to 20/32 while best spectacle- corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) improved from 20/40 to 20/25. Corneal topography revealed a significant improvement which remained stable during the six-month followup period. Conclusions. Epithelial removal with t-PTK before CXL could improve patient's visual outcome

    The interaction of dark traits with the perceptions of apprehension

    This paper integrates dark personality traits with the economics of crime and rational choice theories to identify the role that the Dark Triad and thrill-seeking have on the perceptions of being caught engaging in violating privacy laws. Psychopathy and thrill-seeking had a moderate negative effect on the perceptions of the probability of being apprehended for distributing illegally obtained healthcare information. The implication is that individuals scoring high on the psychopathy and thrill-seeking scales will need less money or monetary incentives to violate HIPAA laws. We also found additional support that white hat hackers score high on the Machiavellian, psychopathy and thrill-seeking scales. We also validated a previous finding that a white hat hacker might drift towards grey hat and black hat hacking

    The κ− μ / Inverse Gamma Fading Model

    Statistical distributions have been extensively used in modeling fading effects in conventional and modern wireless communications. In the present work, we propose a novel κ − µ composite shadowed fading model, which is based on the valid assumption that the mean signal power follows the inverse gamma distribution instead of the lognormal or commonly used gamma distributions. This distribution has a simple relationship with the gamma distribution, but most importantly, its semi heavy-tailed characteristics constitute it suitable for applications relating to modeling of shadowed fading. Furthermore, the derived probability density function of the κ − µ / inverse gamma composite distribution admits a rather simple algebraic representation that renders it convenient to handle both analytically and numerically. The validity and utility of this fading model are demonstrated by means of modeling the fading effects encountered in body centric communications channels, which have been known to be susceptible to the shadowing effect. To this end, extensive comparisons are provided between theoretical and respective real-time measurement results. It is shown that these comparisons exhibit accurate fitting of the new model for various measurement set ups that correspond to realistic communication scenarios

    The η − µ / Inverse Gamma Composite Fading Model

    © 2015 IEEE. In this paper we propose a new composite fading model which assumes that the mean signal power of an η - μ signal envelope follows an inverse gamma distribution. The inverse gamma distribution has a simple relationship with the gamma distribution and can be used to model shadowed fading due to its semi heavy-tailed characteristics. To demonstrate the utility of the new η - μ / inverse gamma composite fading model, we investigate the characteristics of the shadowed fading behavior observed in body centric communications channels which are known to be susceptible to shadowing effects, particularly generated by the human body. It is shown that the η - μ / inverse gamma composite fading model provided an excellent fit to the measurement data. Moreover, using Kullback-Leibler divergence, the η - μ / inverse gamma composite fading model was found to provide a better fit to the measured data than the k - μ / inverse gamma composite fading model, for the communication scenarios considered here

    Customized pachymetric guided epithelial debridement for corneal collagen cross linking

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Backround</p> <p>We describe a modified method for deepitheliazation prior to corneal cross linking (CXL). The technique may overcome the current corneal pachymetric limitation parameter (over 400 microns) that is necessary for the safety of the procedure without affecting the overall benefits.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In a series of two patients, with inferior topographic steepening and regional thinning (less than 400 microns corresponding to the area of corneal steepening), CXL after customized epithelial removal was performed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were no intra- or postoperative adverse events seen by the nine month follow up examination. Stabilization of the corneal ectasia was observed up to nine months post-costumized pachymetric-guided epithelial removal.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The technique of customized pachymetric-guided epithelial removal is easy to perform and may overcome the limitations of the preoperative corneal pachymetry expanding the application of the procedure in patients with regional corneal thinning.</p
