The Status and Perspective of Moral Education in Korea

    Get PDF
1995There seems to be no country like Korea, where moral education is so emphasized in the formal education system. Every student has to take moral education classes two hours a week during 12 years of his/her stay, from primary to senior high school. Moral education class is required for all students by the centralized curriculum of moral education. The textbooks are made and provided exclusively by the Ministry of Education. In primary schools (6 years), pupils are offered two moral education textbooks (a main textbook and a story book) every semester for 6 years. In Middle (3 years) and High (3 years) schools, all the students are provided one or three moral education textbooks every year

Measuring Emotional Intelligence: A Case in Korea

    Get PDF
1996This paper describes an exploratory attempt to establish construct validity of a test that measures emotional intelligence, Based on the existing literature, emotional intelligence is hypothesized as a multi-dimensional construct composed of five subconstructs. An instrument was developed to measure emotional intelligence. The processes of construct validation including a reliability check and a statistical analysis on the underlying dimension of the 47 items are explained. The findings confirm that emotional intelligence is a multi-dimensional construct that requires subtests to cover separate subdimension. The study also provided an empirical evidence to the argument that emotional intelligence is highly close to inter- and intra-personal intelligence, subsets of multiple intelligence

1998The Presidential Commission On Education Reform in Korea (PCER, hereafter) has presented reform proposals to the President on the four separate occasions. The proposals are being implemented by the Committee on the Education Reform Implementation: Although the Minister of Education is in charge of the implementation, Ministers of twelve departments are involved in the implementation of the reform proposals. The reform proposals are broken down into 120 (action plan) tasks, which can be categorized into four areas: Primary and secondary education (53 tasks): establishment of school council, introduction of student records, activation of after school programs, improvement in conditions of education, reform of school culture and etc. Higher education (19 tasks): encouragement of autonomy for college admission quota, implementation of a minimum credit system for college major, improvement in college admission procedures and etc. Continuing education and vocational training (25 tasks): establishing vocational education and training system (legislation of three laws on vocational training) and etc. Building up an infrastructure for education: increase in educational budget to 5% of GNP, establishment of cyber information center for academic research, establishment of educational deregulation committee and etc

A Review of Multiple Intelligences Education Programs of Interpersonal Intelligence

2001Since Howard Gardner's introduction of multiple intelligences (MI), a variety of education programs based on MI have been developed and implemented. The programs have a wide spectrum of aims, content, methods of instruction, testing and, evaluation. A review of those programs of interpersonal intelligence of MI was felt necessary in order to have clearer ideas about our position in applying multiple intelligences to education. The review was undertaken following the steps of why, what, when, where, who, and how in regards to the characteristics of the MI programs examined. The results are as follows. The objectives of educational programs of MI can be divided into two categories: Firstly, to improve the quality of teaching subject matters through or by using MI. Secondly, to improve and develop MI itself. The contents of the reviewed programs were focused either on the roles (or end-state) or the components of the interpersonal intelligence domain. Some programs used both as contents for teaching. For the better MI program, the symbol system in that domain should be considered as the content. The environment in which the programs were conducted was mostly in ordinary classrooms equipped with MI materials or MI-specific learning centers. The effects of the programs were generally better when the students were younger. The methods of instruction used in the programs focused either on providing experiences or direct teaching/training of MI using intellectual strengths. The roles of teachers of the program were mostly those of evaluators, observers or facilitators. In conclusion, the educational programs of MI reviewed here have shown a remarkable progress in both the extent and quality over a comparatively short period. However, it is worth mentioning that the programs should entail clearer and more idiosyncratic identity: They should differ from the educational programs of IQ, creativity, morality, Emotional Intelligence, or simply academic improvement. This means that the programs seem to be not entirely faithful to the authentic theory of MI and that they should henceforth seek to apply more closely authenticity of MI theory which underpin multiple intelligences

Field-induced Bose-Einstein condensation and supersolid in the two-dimensional Kondo necklace

The application of an external magnetic field of sufficient strength to a spin system composed of a localized singlet can overcome the energy gap and trigger bosonic condensation and so provide an alternative method to realize exotic phases of matter in real materials. Previous research has indicated that a spin Hamiltonian with on-site Kondo coupling may be the effective many-body Hamiltonian for Ba2NiO2(AgSe)2\text{Ba}_2\text{NiO}_2\text{(AgSe)}_2 (BNOAS) and here we study such a Hamiltonian using a tensor network ansatz in two dimensions. Our results unveil a phase diagram which indicates the underlying phases of BNOAS. We propose, in response to the possible doping-induced superconductivity of BNOAS, a fermionic model for further investigation. We hope that our discovery can bring up further interest in both theoretical and experimental researches for related nickelate compounds.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 2 table

    Pleural Epithelioid Hemangioendothelioma

    Get PDF
Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) is a rare tumor of vascular origin. While it can be found in any tissue, it is most often found in lung and liver and usually has an intermediate behavior. EHEs originating from pleural tissue have been less frequently described than those from other sites. Furthermore, to date, all of the cited pleural EHEs were described as highly aggressive. In the present report, we describe a rare case of pleural EHE extending to lung and bone in a 31-year-old woman. The histological diagnosis was confirmed by both conventional examination and immunohistochemistry. Her disease stabilized during the 4th course of adriamycin (45 mg/m2, day 1-3), dacarbazine (300 mg/m2, day 1-3) and ifosfamide (2,500 mg/m2, day 1-3) with mesna, and she survived for 10 months after the diagnosis

Comparison between Kidney and Hemoperfusion for Paraquat Elimination

    Get PDF
The mortality rate of acute paraquat (PQ) poisoning depends on the PQ concentration in the blood. It has been shown that the kidneys eliminate PQ effectively. However, early renal function deterioration is frequently observed in acute PQ intoxication. This study is designed to compare the efficacy of PQ elimination with hemoperfusion (HP) and kidneys, taking into account the functional deterioration of the kidneys. The amount of renal and HP excretion of PQ were measured during the procedure of HP in patients with acute PQ intoxication. The PQ clearance and the actual amount of PQ elimination by the HP cartridge during the HP procedure were 111±11 mL/min (range; 13.2-162.2 mL/min) and 251.4±506.3 mg (range; 4.6-1,655.7) each. While, the renal clearance and actual amount of renal elimination of PQ was 79.8±56.0 mL/min (range; 9.7-177.0) and 75.4±73.6 mg (range; 4.9-245.8). As the creatinine clearance decreased, the PQ elimination by HP was as effective as or more effective than the renal elimination. In conclusion, early HP must be provided for life saving treatment in patients with acute PQ intoxication

Association of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Gene Polymorphisms with Susceptibility and Clinicopathologic Characteristics of Colorectal Cancer

Since vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is known to be a potent pro-angiogenic factor, we evaluated the potential association of two VEGF gene polymorphisms (-634G>C and 936C>T) with the susceptibility and the clinicopathologic characteristics of colorectal cancer (CRC). The VEGF genotypes were determined using fresh colorectal tissue from 465 patients who had undergone a surgical resection and peripheral blood lymphocytes from 413 healthy controls by PCR/DHPLC assay. For the -634G>C polymorphism, the -634 GC or CC genotype was associated with a decreased risk of CRC (odds ratio [OR], 0.62; p=0.001) as a dominant model of C allele, whereas the 936 TT genotype correlated with advanced stage/ metastasis, a high serum level of CA19-9, and an higher grade in patients with CRC. In the haplotype analyses, haplotype -634C/936C and -634G/936T were associated with a decreased susceptibility of CRC (OR, 0.53 and 0.56; p<0.001, respectively). These observations imply that the VEGF gene polymorphisms may be associated with the susceptibility or clinicopathologic features of CRC. However, further studies of other VEGF sequence variants and their biological functions are needed to understand the role of the VEGF gene polymorphisms in the development and progression of CRC
