A 23-year-old woman with heart failure developed pressure ulcer on her sacral area due to a long-term bed rest and impaired hemodynamics. The ulcer improved only slightly after 2 months with povidone-iodine sugar ointment because of severe nausea and anorexia. Then, the nutrition support team (NST) started intervention and estimated the patient's malnutrition from her body weight (30.1 kg), body mass index (BMI) (13.9), triceps skinfold thickness (TSF) (3.5 mm), arm circumference (AC) (17.2 cm) and serum albumin (2.6 g/dl). The NST administrated an enteral nutrition formula through a nasogastric tube and tried to provide meals according to the patient's taste. Although DESIGN score improved to 7 (DESIGN: d2e1s2i1g1n0 = 7) 2 months later, severe nausea prevented the patient from taking any food perorally. However, after nasogastric decannulation, her appetite improved and 1 month later her body weight increased to 32.8 kg, her BMI to 15.2, TSF to 7.5 mm, AC to 19.7 cm and serum albumin to 4.1 g/dl, and the wound completely healed

In the Southeast Asian tropics, Arhopala lycaenid butterflies feed on Macaranga ant-plants inhabited by Crematogaster (subgenus Decacrema) ants tending Coccus-scale insects. A recent phylogenetic study showed that (1) the plants and ants have been codiversifying for the past 20-16 million years (Myr), and that (2) the tripartite symbiosis was formed 9-7 Myr ago, when the scale insects became involved in the plant-ant mutualism. To determine when the lycaenids first parasitized the Macaranga tripartite symbiosis, we constructed a molecular phylogeny of the lycaenids that feed on Macaranga by using mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data and estimated their divergence times based on the cytochrome oxidase I molecular clock. The minimum age of the lycaenids was estimated by the time-calibrated phylogeny to be 2.05 Myr, about one-tenth the age of the plant-ant association, suggesting that the lycaenids are latecomers that associated themselves with the pre-existing symbiosis of plant, ant, and scale insects.ArticleECOLOGICAL RESEARCH. 27(2):437-443 (2012)journal articl

Specially, it investigates how Gakidana, special meal for the spirits of ancestors in Bon period, has been changed and maintained in Nayaura, a fishing village located in southern Mie prefecture. By meticulous research into traditional meals and literature study on socioeconomic background of this village, the study reveals three factors that have maintained the custom of traditional meals:1) Maintenance of population supported by economic development has produced flame keepers.2) Maintenance of population of fishery industry has given inhabitants similar life structure.3) Close relationship among inhabitants results in sharing ingredients for traditional meals

A healthy eating habits is necessary for the high school student in the middle of a period of growth to bring up healthy mind and body.A healthy eating habits have influence on formation of the eating habits in the future and formation of the next generation. So, it is very important. We researched their eating habits this time. The following is the findings.1) Many students are not concerned about foods and nourishment. 36.8% of the students are careful for a balanced diet.2) 26.9% of the students don\u27t eat breakfast. The most many reasons of that is they have no time to eat breakfast.3) Almost all students who take care of daily meals eat breakfast everyday, and they exchange greetings during the meal quite often.4) About half of the students can cook, and many students can cook fried rice and curry.5) It is remarkable that 46.5% of students eat breakfast alone.6) 62.7% of students are pointed out about table manners. The most many cases to be pointed out is their eating posture.7) About half of the students hold chopsticks correctly

It is clear that children acquired knowledge through nutrition education activity. But since a surrounding adult\u27s cooperation is not obtained, children are not changing actual eating habits. Influence of a guardian or the instructor who has relation with children in everyday life is very important. Pushing in activity, the instructor understood that nutrition education was important. If an instructor wants to continue to carry out nutrition education to children or a guardian, she is highly motivated

    Nuclear-translocated Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate Dehydrogenase Promotes Poly(ADP-ribose) Polymerase-1 Activation during Oxidative/Nitrosative Stress in Stroke

peer reviewedIn addition to its role in DNA repair, nuclear poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) mediates brain damage when it is over-activated by oxidative/nitrosative stress. Nonetheless, it remains unclear how PARP-1 is activated in neuropathological contexts. Here we report that PARP-1 interacts with a pool of glyceradehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) that translocates into the nucleus under oxidative/nitrosative stress both in vitro and in vivo. A well conserved amino acid at the N terminus of GAPDH determines its protein binding with PARP-1. Wild-type (WT) but not mutant GAPDH, that lacks the ability to bind PARP-1, can promote PARP-1 activation. Importantly, disrupting this interaction significantly diminishes PARP-1 overactivation and protects against both brain damage and neurological deficits induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion in a rat stroke model. Together, these findings suggest that nuclear GAPDH is a key regulator of PARP-1 activity, and its signaling underlies the pathology of oxidative/nitrosative stress-induced brain damage including stroke
