    Mobile Game: A Multiplayer Mobile Game via Bluetooth Technology for Nokia Series 60

    The Final Year Project developed is 'Mobile Game: A Multiplayer Mobile Game via Bluetooth Technology for Nokia Series 60'. The existing mobile games are mostly a stand-alone application, which means the game can only be played by a player. Even with the availability of multiplayer mobile games in the market, the maximum number ofplayers of those games is two. The objective of this project is to study and develop a multiplayer (specifically three players) mobile game with Bluetooth technology as the connection means. The first part of this project would be the research and study pertaining to the development of multiplayer mobile game for three players using Bluetooth technology. The second part of the research pertains to the downside of Bluetooth technology and recommendations to improve the situation. The methodology used is the combination of waterfall and prototyping model. A mobile game application is produced as the end-product of this project. Meanwhile, the findings discover the details on the end-product development and also some discussion design issues and challenges as well as limitationof Bluetoothtechnology

    Architecture of a GPS-based road management system

    Malfunctioning traffic lights, potholes and roads in bad condition are only a few of the innumerable common thoroughfare problems that occasionally contribute to accidents. People tend to ignore reporting those issues as the channels for making a complaint is inconvenient. Accuracy of complaints is also at doubt as it tends to be general eg. Pothole at Ampang Road, in front of a police station. This paper presents the architecture of a Global Positioning System (GPS) based approach for reporting thoroughfare problems via Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) for road maintenance management environment. To increase accuracy and efficiency, GPS can be used as it enables the tracking and tracing of the three figures of a GPS receiver’s coordinates namely longitude, latitude and altitude. Data like location, date and time will be optimized by mapping the site of where the thoroughfare problem exists in a map, with the intention that the relevant authorities could identify the spot and have the problems resolved responsively. The proposed system will serve as a handier and convenient alternative means for road users to send complaints to the relevant authorities, in addition to the existing channels, so that these issues could be addressed in a timely manner

    Prevalence of insomnia symptoms and their associated factors in patients treated in outpatient clinics of four general hospitals in Guangzhou, China

    Background: Data on the prevalence of insomnia symptoms in medical outpatient clinics in China are lacking. This study examined the prevalence of insomnia symptoms and their socio-demographic correlates in patients treated at medical outpatient clinics affiliated with four general hospitals in Guangzhou, a large metropolis in southern China. Method: A total of 4399 patients were consecutively invited to participate in the study. Data on insomnia and its socio-demographic correlates were collected with standardized questionnaires. Results: The prevalence of any type of insomnia symptoms was 22.1% (95% confidence interval (CI): 20.9–23.3%); the prevalence of difficulty initiating sleep was 14.3%, difficulty maintaining sleep was 16.2%, and early morning awakening was 12.4%. Only 17.5% of the patients suffering from insomnia received sleeping pills. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that male gender, education level, rural residence, and being unemployed or retired were negatively associated with insomnia symptoms, while lacking health insurance, older age and more severe depressive symptoms were positively associated with insomnia symptoms. Conclusions: Insomnia symptoms are common in patients attending medical outpatient clinics in Guangzhou. Increasing awareness of sleep hygiene measures, regular screening and psychosocial and pharmacological interventions for insomnia are needed in China. Trial registration: ChiCTR-INR-16008066.     Interoceptive awareness: MBSR training alters information processing of salience network

    Mindfulness refers to a mental state of awareness of internal experience without judgment. Studies have suggested that each mindfulness practice may involve a unique mental state, but the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms remain unknown. Here we examined how distinct mindfulness practices after mindfulness-based intervention alter brain functionality. Specifically, we investigated the functional alterations of the salience network (SN) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) among the two interoceptive mindfulness practices—breathing and body scan—associated with interoceptive awareness in fixed attention and shifted attention, respectively. Long-distance functional connectivity (FC) and regional homogeneity (ReHo) approaches were applied to measure distant and local neural information processing across various mental states. We hypothesized that mindful breathing and body scan would yield a unique information processing pattern in terms of long-range and local functional connectivity (FC). A total of 18 meditation-naïve participants were enrolled in an 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program alongside a waitlist control group (n = 14), with both groups undergoing multiple fMRI sessions during breathing, body scan and resting state for comparison. We demonstrated that two mindfulness practices affect both the long-distance FCSN and the local ReHo, only apparent after the MBSR program. Three functional distinctions between the mindfulness practices and the resting state are noted: (1) distant SN connectivity to occipital regions increased during the breathing practice (fixed attention), whereas the SN increased connection with the frontal/central gyri during the body scan (shifting attention); (2) local ReHo increased only in the parietal lobe during the body scan (shifting attention); (3) distant and local connections turned into a positive correlation only during the mindfulness practices after the MBSR training, indicating a global enhancement of the SN information processing during mindfulness practices. Though with limited sample size, the functional specificity of mindfulness practices offers a potential research direction on neuroimaging of mindfulness, awaiting further studies for verification

    The Aqueous Extract of Rhizome of Gastrodia elata

    This study aims to investigate the neuroprotective effect of the rhizome of Gastrodia elata (GE) aqueous extract on beta-amyloid(Aβ)-induced toxicity in vivo and in vitro. Transgenic Drosophila mutants with Aβ-induced neurodegeneration in pan-neuron and ommatidia were used to determine the efficacy of GE. The antiapoptotic and antioxidative mechanisms of GE were also studied in Aβ-treated pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells. In vivo studies demonstrated that GE (5 mg/g Drosophila media)-treated Drosophila possessed a longer lifespan, better locomotor function, and less-degenerated ommatidia when compared with the Aβ-expressing control (all P<0.05). In vitro studies illustrated that GE increased the cell viability of Aβ-treated PC12 cells in dose-dependent manner, probably through attenuation of Aβ-induced oxidative and apoptotic stress. GE also significantly upregulated the enzymatic activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase, leading to the decrease of reactive oxidation species production and apoptotic marker caspase-3 activity. In conclusion, our current data presented the first evidence that the aqueous extract of GE was capable of reducing the Aβ-induced neurodegeneration in Drosophila, possibly through inhibition of apoptosis and reduction of oxidative stress. GE aqueous extract could be developed as a promising herbal agent for neuroprotection and novel adjuvant therapies for Alzheimer’s disease

    A population-based cohort study of 394,401 children followed for 10 years exhibits sustained effectiveness of scoliosis screening

    © 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Background context: The value of scoliosis screening has been recently shown in a multicenter randomized controlled trial. However, the long-term sustainability of the clinical effectiveness of scoliosis screening as a routine health service remains unknown. Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the sustainability of the clinical effectiveness of school scoliosis screening. Study design/setting: A large population-based cohort study with a 10-year follow-up was conducted. Patient sample: A total of 394,401 students who were in the fifth grade during the five academic years from 1995/1996 to 1999/2000 formed five consecutive annual cohorts. The students were eligible for the Hong Kong scoliosis screening program, with their screening history and medical records until their nineteenth birthdays being assessed. Outcome measures: The outcome measures considered in the study were development of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis by the 19 years of age and the Cobb angle. Methods: The clinical effectiveness of scoliosis screening was assessed by referral rate for radiographic diagnosis, sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values. Results: A total of 306,144 students (78%) participated in scoliosis screening, which used a two-tier system. The prevalence of curves of 20 or greater was 1.8% (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.7-1.8%), whereas the referral rate for radiography, the sensitivity, and the positive predictive value (PPV) for curves of 20 or greater were 4.1% (95% CI, 4.0-4.2%), 91% (95% CI, 90-92%), and 40% (95% CI, 39-41%), respectively. Across the five consecutive annual cohorts, the prevalence and sensitivity for curves of 20 or greater increased by 0.23% (95% CI, 0.21-0.25%; p<.001) and 0.76% (95% CI, 0.43-1.04%; p<.001) per year, respectively; however, the PPV was reduced by 1.71% (95% CI, 1.09-2.33%; p<.001) per year. Conclusions: This report describes the first large population-based study with a long-term follow-up indicating that a scoliosis screening program can have sustained clinical effectiveness in identifying patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis needing clinical observation. As the prevalence of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis increases, scoliosis screening should be continued as a routine health service in schools or by general practitioners if there is no scoliosis screening policy.postprin

    Global sagittal alignment after surgery of right thoracic idiopathic scoliosis in adolescents and adults with and without thoracic hypokyphosis

Written informed consent was obtained from all subjects and their parents before participating in this study.AbstractThis study aimed to characterize global sagittal alignment in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) with normal kyphosis (NTK, kyphosis &gt; 10°) and with thoracic hypokyphosis (THK, kyphosis &lt; 10°), before and after posterior spinal fusion, and compare them with asymptomatic controls. 27 AIS girls and young adults with right thoracic curves were included (seventeen with age ≤ 18 years, then age &gt; 21). Biplanar radiographies were acquired at baseline, immediate post-operatively, 1-year and 2-year follow-up, and 3D reconstruction of the spine and pelvis was performed. NTK and THK showed different global sagittal alignment, as well as differences compared to controls. AIS with THK at baseline had higher SVA/SFD (2.0 ± 2.9 vs − 0.4 ± 1.9; P &lt; 0.05) and OD-HA (0.2 ± 1.4° vs − 1.3 ± 1.6°; P &lt; 0.05) than controls, indicating that THK had compensated balance with unusual forward leaning posture. Immediately post-operation, SVA/SFD remained high (1.3 ± 3.0) while OD-HA reversed (− 1.2 ± 1.7°), indicating that THK patients had found partially compensated balance. After 2-yeas, both SVA/SFD (− 1.3 ± 2.1) and OD-HA (− 1.4 ± 0.9°) were normalized. The changes in global sagittal alignment and mechanism of balance are different in AIS with or without THK.
