Language attitudes and religion: Kurdish Alevis in the UK
In this article I report on results of a Matched Guise Tests (MGT) study investigating attitudes towards Bohtan (BHKr) and Maraş Kurmanji (MRKr) spoken among the UK diaspora. I focus on BHKr, which I use to refer to the Kurmanji that is identified as “good Kurmanji”, also referred to as “academic”/ “proper”, and MRKr to refer to the Kurmanji that is referred to as “bad Kurmanji” by Kurmanji speakers in the UK (Author 2018). The MGT, and questions pertaining to perceptual dialectology such as respondents’ perceptions of region, religion, gender and class in this study, show that attitudes towards what is perceived as BHKr and MRKr differ significantly. By concentrating on language attitudes towards Kurmanji which have never been studied in the UK context before, this paper investigates negative and positive evaluations of both BHKr and MRKr in relation to religious affiliation
Multi-Nucleon Exchange in Quasi-Fission Reactions
Nucleon exchange mechanism is investigated in the central collisions of
Ca + U and Ca + U systems near the
quasi-fission regime in the framework of the Stochastic Mean-Field (SMF)
approach. Sufficiently below the fusion barrier, di-nuclear structure in the
collisions is maintained to a large extend. Consequently, it is possible to
describe nucleon exchange as a diffusion process familiar from deep-inelastic
collisions. Diffusion coefficients for proton and neutron exchange are
determined from the microscopic basis of the SMF approach in the semi-classical
framework. Calculations show that after a fast charge equilibration the system
drifts toward symmetry over a very long interaction time. Large dispersions of
proton and neutron distributions of the produced fragments indicate that
diffusion mechanism may help to populate heavy trans-uranium elements near the
quasi-fission regime in these collisions
Nucleon exchange in heavy-ion collisions within stochastic mean-field approach
Nucleon exchange mechanism is investigated in deep-inelastic symmetric
heavy-ion collisions in the basis of the Stochastic Mean-Field approach. By
extending the previous work to off-central collisions, analytical expression is
deduced for diffusion coefficient of nucleon exchange mechanism. Numerical
calculations are carried out for Ca + Ca and Zr +
Zr systems and the results are compared with the phenomenological
nucleon exchange model. Also, calculations are compared with the available

Language ideologies and identities in Kurdish heritage language classrooms in London
This article investigates the way that Kurdish language learners construct discourses around identity in two language schools in London. It focuses on the values that heritage language learners of Kurdish-Kurmanji attribute to the Kurmanji spoken in the Bohtan and Maraş regions of Turkey. Kurmanji is one of the varieties of Kurdish that is spoken mainly in Turkey and Syria. The article explores the way that learners perceive the language from the Bohtan region to be “good Kurmanji”, in contrast to the “bad Kurmanji” from the Maraş region. Drawing on ethnographic data collected from community-based Kurdish-Kurmanji heritage language classes for adults in South and East London, I illustrate how distinctive lexical and phonological features such as the sounds [a:] ~ [ɔ:] and [ɛ]/[æ] ~ [a:] are associated with regional (and religious) identities of the learners. I investigate how these distinct features emerge in participants’ discourses as distinctive identity markers. More specifically this article examines how language learners construct, negotiate and resist language ideologies in the classroom

Polarization Beam Splitter Based on Self-Collimation of a Hybrid Photonic Crystal
A photonic crystal polarization beam splitter based on photonic band gap and self-collimation effects is designed for optical communication wavelengths. The photonic crystal structure consists of a polarization-insensitive self-collimation region and a splitting region. TM- and TE-polarized waves propagate without diffraction in the self-collimation region, whereas they split by 90 degrees in the splitting region. Efficiency of more than 75% for TM- and TE-polarized light is obtained for a polarization beam splitter size of only 17 μm x 17 μm in a wavelength interval of 60 nm including 1.55 μm

The effects of storage temperature and position on embryonic mortality of ostrich (Struthio camelus) eggs
The present study was carried out with the aim of determining the effects of storage temperature and storage position on embryonic mortalities in ostrich eggs. A total of 229 ostrich eggs was collected from two commercial ostrich farms. The effects of storage temperature on embryonic mortality differed. Embryonic deaths (totalled for early, medium and late incubation) were determined at respectively 28.6, 32.0, 42.9% in groups of eggs from stored immediately after collection for seven days at 16 °C, 21 °C and 25 °C. Embryonic mortality was not affected by storing eggs for one week at 16 °C in either the vertical position (with the aircell at the top, or the aircell at the bottom) or the horizontal position. The percentage of embryonic mortalities was 25.8, 26.7, 24.1 for the different storage positions, respectively. These results indicate that ostrich eggs must be stored at 21 °C or less after collection to maximise hatchability and that embryonic survival is not affected by storing position
The linguistic repertoire, language ideologies and space: The case of a young asylum seeker on the island of Lesvos
This paper discusses the construction of the linguistic repertoire and the ways in which it is shaped in connection to space - in the context of im/mobility and institutionalisation as part of the asylum procedure in a transit shelter for unaccompanied minors on Lesvos Island in Greece. The article examines a young person’s (Amir, aged 17) linguistic repertoire in his metalinguistic interpretations by using a multimodal biographical approach developed by Busch (2012), which involves visual and verbal representation of linguistic experience. In most linguistic repertoire studies, linguistic and semiotic resources are seen as a whole – a move away from named bounded languages – and a focus on the relationality of the resources including language, body and other semiotic resources. However, the invisibilised parts of the linguistic repertoire in migratory settings are less dealt with. By focusing on the semiotic process of erasure in the context of an in-transit individual, this paper argues that the linguistic repertoire is a unintegrated whole that involves the expansion of the resources as well as the invisibilisation of the resources
