The purpose of this thesis is to examine how religiosity affects both public attitudes about the importance of severe punishments (as a characteristic of democracy) and public confidence in the police and the justice system. This study also examines the socio-demographic (e.g., age, gender, education) factors that influence public perceptions about punishment and confidence in criminal justice institutions. In doing so, this study compares two countries that are both religious and democratic: Turkey and the United States. The current study employs data from Wave 5 (2005-2008) of the World Values Survey (WVS). The U.S. data is based on a sample of 1,249 respondents who participated in face-toace interviews in 2006. The Turkish data is based on a sample of 1,346 respondents who participated in face-toace interviews in 2007. Analyses were conducted using the SPSS 21 software program

Objective: The aim of the study is to carry out the adaptation of the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale to Turkish and seek evidence of validity and reliability of the scale. Methods: The study was conducted with a total of 334 health professionals, ranging in age from 17 to 64 years and seniority from 1 to 33 years. Of the participants, 197 (59%) were female, 137 (41%) were male. The study was conducted in psychiatry, emergency and intensive care services and outpatient clinics in Izmir Tepecik Training and Research Hospital. 103 of participants were physicians, 188 were nurses, 21 were emergency medical technicians, and 22 were other health professionals. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to test the construct validity of the scale in the study. The relationship between the scale and Organizational Cynicism Scale (OCS) and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) has been looked into to test criterion validity. The reliability of the scale was calculated by using the Cronbach's alpha internal consistency inference method and confirmatory factor analysis was calculated with the LISREL 8.7 program. Result: Confirmatory factor analysis resulted in compliance indices confirming three dimensional originality, factor loadings ranged from 0.29-0.79 and t values were found as significant. In addition, OCS and MBI Inventory which examined similar constructs resulted in high and significant relationships (0.59 and 0.70). The reliability coefficients of the scale were found to be alpha=0.91 for the total scale of 17 items. In addition, alpha=0.78 for avoidance from subdimension, alpha=0.82 for arousal and alpha=0.84 for emotional violation was calculated. Discussion: As a result of the analysis of the data, it was concluded that traumatic stress scale was a valid and reliable measurement tool

The study examined 50 children's 60-72-month picture books belonging to 3 different publishing houses in the Bornova Mehmet Akif Ersoy Cocuk ve Genclik Library in Bornova district of Izmir province. Outcomes and indicators in the field of social-emotional development of Ministry of National Education 2013 Preschool Education Program were determined as criteria and were used as a data collection tool. Five researchers who conducted the study in the analysis part of the study evaluated illustrated children's books individually according to the social-emotional field outcomes and indicators in the program in terms of their pictures and content elements. The obtained data were analyzed with frequency and percentage values. In the study, Miles and Huberman's formula was used to calculate the reliability among the researchers and the concordance was found to be 0,92. Results: In the study, it was concluded that in the pictures and content items of illustrated children's books, while the highest level of importance is given to this learning outcome which is "Describes the feelings of others about an event or situation."; the learning outcome of "Takes responsibility in activities related to Ataturk" is not mentioned. Originality: It is known that there are limited number of resources which examine the content elements of illustrated children's books in terms of social-emotional field in the literature. It is also known that there is no study examining the visual elements of illustrated children's books in terms of social-emotional field. Conclusion: The data obtained as a result of the study show that studies should be carried out to increase the quality books that include gains that are not included at all, like those that are frequently included in picture children's books for preschool children

Oral and dental findings of griscelli syndrome type 3

    No full text
Griscelli syndrome (GS) is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized by variable immunodeficiency, partial albinism, abnormal accumulation of melanosomes in melanocytes, pigmentary dilution of the skin, and shiny silver-gray hair. GS has three types, with the first and second types caused by mutations in two genes being located at band 15q21: RAB27A and MYO5A. The expression of the third form of GS is restricted to the characteristic hypopigmentation of GS, and results from mutation in the gene that encodes melanophilin MLPH. It has also been shown that an identical phenotype can result from the deletion of the MYO5A F-exon. The aim of this case report is the presentation of oral and dental features and SEM images of the hair of a 12-year-old girl with GS type 3. [Arch Clin Exp Surg 2015; 4(3.000): 164-167

Multimeric protein assemblies are abundant in nature. Streptavidin is an attractive protein that provides a paradigm system to investigate the intra- and intermolecular interactions of multimeric protein complexes. Also, it offers a versatile tool for biotechnological applications. Here, we present two apo-streptavidin structures, the first one is an ambient temperature Serial Femtosecond X-ray crystal (Apo-SFX) structure at 1.7 Å resolution and the second one is a cryogenic crystal structure (Apo-Cryo) at 1.1 Å resolution. These structures are mostly in agreement with previous structural data. Combined with computational analysis, these structures provide invaluable information about structural dynamics of apo streptavidin. Collectively, these data further reveal a novel cooperative allostery of streptavidin which binds to substrate via water molecules that provide a polar interaction network and mimics the substrate biotin which displays one of the strongest affinities found in nature

Introduction Brain metastasis prevalence is higher in patients with positive epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation, anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) and C-ROS oncogene 1 (ROS-1) fusion change in lung adenocarcinoma. Objectives The purpose of our study is to investigate the relation between the genetic change type and the initial distant metastasis in stage IV lung adenocarcinoma patients with genetic changes. Methods The study was conducted between January 2007 and December 2018 in a retrospective fashion with patients who had lung cancer diagnosed as stage IV adenocarcinoma. The relation between genetic mutation change (EGFR, ALK or ROS-1) and distant metastasis was analysed. Results A total of 845 patients were included in the study. The median age was 62 (28-88). It was determined that lung and pleura metastases were more frequent at a significant level in patients with positive EGFR mutation (P = 0.032,P = 0.004, respectively). In patients with positive ALK fusion change, pleura metastasis was determined to be more frequent (P = 0.001). Multiple metastases were determined to be significantly more in patients with positive ALK fusion change than single metastasis (P = 0.02). Conclusion In patients with EGFR mutant lung adenocarcinoma, lung and pleura metastasis is more frequent and pleura metastasis is more frequent in ALK positive adenocarcinoma. Additionally, multiple organ metastases are higher in ALK positive lung adenocarcinoma

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in 198 million reported infections and more than 4 million deaths as of July 2021 (covid19.who.int). Research to identify effective therapies for COVID-19 includes: (1) designing a vaccine as future protection; (2) de novo drug discovery; and (3) identifying existing drugs to repurpose them as effective and immediate treatments. To assist in drug repurposing and design, we determine two apo structures of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) main protease at ambient temperature by serial femtosecond X-ray crystallography. We employ detailed molecular simulations of selected known main protease inhibitors with the structures and compare binding modes and energies. The combined structural and molecular modeling studies not only reveal the dynamics of small molecules targeting the main protease but also provide invaluable opportunities for drug repurposing and structure-based drug design strategies against SARS-CoV-2
