Differentiation of Murine Embryonic Stem Cells to Thyrocytes Requires Insulin and Insulin-like Growth Factor-1
[Abstract] The mechanisms controlling thyrocyte development during embryonic stem (ES) cell differentiation have only been partially elucidated, although previous studies have suggested the participation of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in these processes. To further define the role of TSH in this context, we have studied a murine ES cell line in which green fluorescent protein (GFP) cDNA is targeted to the TSH receptor (TSHR) gene, linking the expression of GFP to the transcription of the endogenous TSHR gene. We demonstrate that, in the initial stages of embryoid body formation, activin A and TSH induce the differentiation of definitive endoderm and thyrocyte progenitors expressing Sox17, Foxa2, and TSHR. These thyrocyte progenitors are then converted into cellular aggregates that, in the presence of insulin and IGF-1, further differentiate into mature thyroglobulin-expressing thyrocytes. Our data suggest that, despite the fact that TSH is important for the induction and specification of thyrocytes from ES cells, insulin and IGF-1 are crucial for thyrocyte maturation. Our method provides a powerful in vitro differentiation model for studying the mechanisms of early thyrocyte lineage development.United States. National Institutes of Health; DK06805

The Search for Benchmarks: When Do Crowds Provide Wisdom?
We compare the performance of a comprehensive set of alternative peer identification schemes used in economic benchmarking. Our results show the peer firms identified from aggregation of informed agents' revealed choices in Lee, Ma, and Wang (2014) perform best, followed by peers with the highest overlap in analyst coverage, in explaining cross-sectional variations in base firms' out-of-sample: (a) stock returns, (b) valuation multiples, (c) growth rates, (d) R&D expenditures, (e) leverage, and (f) profitability ratios. Conversely, peers firms identified by Google and Yahoo Finance, as well as product market competitors gleaned from 10-K dis-closures, turned in consistently worse performances. We contextualize these results in a simple model that predicts when information aggregation across heterogeneously informed individuals is likely to lead to improvements in dealing with the problem of economic benchmarking
Demonstration of large ionization coefficient ratio in AlAs0.56Sb0.44 lattice matched to InP
The electron and hole avalanche multiplication characteristics have been measured in bulk AlAs0.56Sb0.44 p-i-n and n-i-p homojunction diodes, lattice matched to InP, with nominal avalanche region thicknesses of ~0.6 μm, 1.0 μm and 1.5 μm. From these and data from two much thinner devices, the bulk electron and hole impact ionization coefficients (α and β respectively), have been determined over an electric-field range from 220-1250 kV/cm for α and from 360-1250 kV/cm for β for the first time. The α/β ratio is found to vary from 1000 to 2 over this field range, making it the first report of a wide band-gap III-V semiconductor with ionization coefficient ratios similar to or larger than that observed in silicon

Search-Based Peer Firms: Aggregating Investor Perceptions Through Internet Co-Searches
Applying a "co-search" algorithm to Internet traffic at the SEC's EDGAR website, we develop a novel method for identifying economically-related peer firms and for measuring their relative importance. Our results show that firms appearing in chronologically adjacent searches by the same individual (Search-Based Peers or SBPs) are fundamentally similar on multiple dimensions. In direct tests, SBPs dominate GICS6 industry peers in explaining cross-sectional variations in base firms' out-of-sample (a) stock returns, (b) valuation multiples, (c) growth rates, (d) R&D expenditures, (e) leverage, and (f) profitability ratios. We show that SBPs are not constrained by standard industry classification and are more dynamic, pliable, and concentrated. We also show that co-search intensity captures the degree of similarity between firms. Our results highlight the potential of the collective wisdom of investors―extracted from co-search patterns―in addressing long-standing benchmarking problems in finance
Modeling realistic Earth matter density for CP violation in neutrino oscillation
We examine the effect of a more realistic Earth matter density model which
takes into account of the local density variations along the baseline of a
possi ble 2100 km very long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Its
influence to the measurement of CP violation is investigated and a comparison
with the commonly used global density models made. Significant differences are
found in the comparison of the results of the different density models.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure

Bi-Large Neutrino Mixing See-Saw Mass Matrix with Texture Zeros and Leptogenesis
We study constraints on neutrino properties from texture zeros in bi-large
mixing See-Saw mass matrix and also from leptogenesis. Texture zeros may occur
in the light (class a)) or in the heavy (class b)) neutrino mass matrices. Each
of these two classes has 5 different forms which can produce non-trivial three
generation mixing with at least one texture zero. We find that two types of
texture zero mass matrices in both class a) and class b) can be consistent with
present data on neutrino masses, mixing and produce the observed baryon
asymmetry of the universe. None of the neutrinos can have zero masses with the
lightest of the light neutrinos having a mass larger than about 0.039 eV for
class a) and 0.002 eV for class b). In these models although CKM CP violating
phase vanishes, non-zero Majorana phases, however, can exist and play an
important role in producing the observed baryon asymmetry in our universe
through leptogenesis mechanism. The requirement of producing the observed
baryon asymmetry can further distinguish different models and also restrict the
See-Saw scale to be in the range GeV.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures revised version, some references added, to be

Bound state solutions of the Dirac-Rosen-Morse potential with spin and pseudospin symmetry
The energy spectra and the corresponding two- component spinor wavefunctions
of the Dirac equation for the Rosen-Morse potential with spin and pseudospin
symmetry are obtained. The wave ( state) solutions for this
problem are obtained by using the basic concept of the supersymmetric quantum
mechanics approach and function analysis (standard approach) in the
calculations. Under the spin symmetry and pseudospin symmetry, the energy
equation and the corresponding two-component spinor wavefunctions for this
potential and other special types of this potential are obtained. Extension of
this result to state is suggested.Comment: 18 page
Combined constraints on modified Chaplygin gas model from cosmological observed data: Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach
We use the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to investigate a global
constraints on the modified Chaplygin gas (MCG) model as the unification of
dark matter and dark energy from the latest observational data: the Union2
dataset of type supernovae Ia (SNIa), the observational Hubble data (OHD), the
cluster X-ray gas mass fraction, the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO), and the
cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. In a flat universe, the constraint

Observational constraint on generalized Chaplygin gas model
We investigate observational constraints on the generalized Chaplygin gas
(GCG) model as the unification of dark matter and dark energy from the latest
observational data: the Union SNe Ia data, the observational Hubble data, the
SDSS baryon acoustic peak and the five-year WMAP shift parameter. It is
obtained that the best fit values of the GCG model parameters with their
confidence level are ()

evolution of equation of state (EOS) for dark energy is similar to quiessence,
