    ‘My family’s goals are also my goals’: the relationship between collectivism, distal utility value, and learning and career goals of international university students in Germany

    The utility value of an academic task can affect university students’ learning behavior and career choices. For collectivistic-oriented students, learning and career goals also matter to their families. Following expectancy-value theory, we assumed that families’ achievement-related expectations would affect collectivistic-oriented students’ utility value. We conducted a survey study with 154 international university students in Germany. We found a significant mediation effect of students’ distal utility value of their university coursework on the relationship between students’ collectivism, learning goal orientation, and motivation to follow family-oriented distal career goals, respectively. Practical implications for career counselors and university teachers are discussed

    La Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira cuenta actualmente con un Sistema de Gestión de la Calidad que tiene dentro de su visión al cliente como ente principal de su desempeño. Hoy por hoy el área administrativa de la institución mide la satisfacción de sus clientes a través de un instrumento estándar. Con la intensión de mejorar las actividades internas y de poder tomar mejores decisiones, se ha hecho una propuesta de mejoramiento al instrumento actual de medición de la satisfacción del usuario únicamente para el proceso de Planeación, quien por iniciativa y necesidad propia busca continuar con la premisa sobre la Mejora Continua practicada por los Sistemas de Gestión. El instrumento propuesto, construido con base a la información otorgada por los funcionarios de la oficina de Planeación, evalúa la satisfacción del usuario a través de dos macrovariables, proceso y servicio, quienes a su vez son valoradas por subvariables. Adicionalmente se presenta una propuesta para el esquema del proceso de Planeación y algunas recomendaciones para la metodología al momento de recoger la información, la cual abarca los diferentes tipos de usuarios y los diferentes medios de comunicación utilizados por los usuarios.Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira has a quality management system that has within its vision to the client as the main body of their performance. Today the administrative area of the institution measured customer satisfaction through a standard instrument. With the intention of improving internal activities and make better decisions, has become a proposal for improving the current instrument measuring user satisfaction only to the process of planning, who initiative and their own requirements seeks to continue with the premise on the continuous improvement by the management systems. The instrument proposed, built on the basis of the information given by officials of the Office of planning, evaluates user satisfaction two macrovariables, process and service, who in turn are valued by subvariables. Additionally presents a proposal for the layout of the planning process and some recommendations for the methodology at the time of collecting the information, which covers the different types of users and the various means of communication used by users

    Uncovering Critical Considerations: Using a Culturally Relevant Analysis to Reveal Teachers' Diversity and Equity Beliefs within Visions and Practice

    The primary purpose of this study was to examine teachers' beliefs about diversity and equity through a culturally relevant analysis of their visions of teaching and practice. The secondary purpose was to identify how centrally located these beliefs were within their visions. Participants included a Black British female second grade teacher, a White Cajun-American male pre-kindergarten and a White American female art teacher within one public elementary school in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Using qualitative case study methodology, participants' visions and practices were collected through individual interviews and observations of teaching over the course of one unit of study. Data included interview transcripts, observational field notes and teaching artifacts (e.g., lesson plans, student work). Using Atlas.ti Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) software, data were analyzed using teacher vision and culturally relevant teaching (CRT) frameworks. Both open and a priori codes were assigned to data for each case analysis. Findings reveal underlying positive beliefs for all three teachers as evidenced by the presence of culturally relevant elements in their visions and practice. All teachers also held these elements centrally within their visions of teaching and their practice. The framework for this study as well as its findings demonstrate how vision and CRT may be used to reveal underlying asset rather than deficit teacher beliefs about students

    Stereotype threat-effects for Turkish-origin migrants in Germany: Taking stock of cumulative research evidence

This achievement gap cannot be fully explained by socio-economic differences between the groups. Negative competence stereotypes about Turkish-origin students predict the causal attributions that German preservice teachers make for migrants’ academic underperformance. Specifically, the more strongly preservice teachers endorse negative competence stereotypes, the more likely they are to attribute academic underperformance of Turkish-origin migrants to the migrants themselves and less to the educational system. Stereotype threat theory posits that the activation of stereotypes in test situations can reduce the performance of members of the negatively stereotyped group. Based on this theory, we propose that negative stereotypes provide a social-psychological explanation for the academic underperformance of Turkish-origin migrants compared to Germans. A series of six experiments conducted within a research project funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research investigated stereotype threat effects for Turkish-origin migrants. Two new moderator variables were identified: implicit theory of intelligence and vertical collectivism. A meta-analysis of the six studies showed a small, non-significant mean effect for stereotype threat main effects, but a significant medium-sized mean effect for moderated stereotype threat effects. Limitations and practical implications of stereotype threat effects in educational settings are discussed

    Advanced Glycation End Products: Formation, Role in Diabetic Complications, and Potential in Clinical Applications

    Hyperglycemic conditions and disruptions to glucose-regulating pathways lead to increased formation of highly reactive aldehydes, methylglyoxal and glyoxal, which react with certain arginine and lysine residues in proteins to form advanced glycation end products (AGEs). These AGEs damage the integrity of the retinal vasculature predominantly through two mechanisms: non-receptor-mediated damage, which pertains to the interaction with extracellular matrix and its functional properties, and receptor-mediated damage through AGE interactions with their receptors (RAGE) on pericytes and Muller cells. Damage occurring between AGE and RAGE potentially generates reactive oxygen species, inflammatory cytokines, and growth factors. Both mechanisms result in increased permeability of endothelial tight junctions, and this increased permeability can lead to leaking and eventually ischemia. Once this ischemia becomes significant, neovascularization can occur, the hallmark of proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Current pharmaceutical studies have shown the potential of AGE inhibitors, such as aminoguanidine, in decreasing AGE production, thus minimizing its effects in hyperglycemic conditions. Other pharmaceutical interventions, such as Tanshinone IIA, aim to protect cells from the impacts of AGEs. Future research will not only continue to understand the properties of AGEs and their effects on diabetes and diabetic complications like diabetic retinopathy but will also explore how they impact other diseases

    The Role of the Hypothalamic Paraventricular Nucleus and the Organum Vasculosum Lateral Terminalis in the Control of Sodium Appetite in Male Rats

    Angiotensin II (AngII) and aldosterone cooperate centrally to produce a robust sodium appetite. The intracellular signaling and circuitry that underlie this interaction remain unspecified. Male rats pretreated with both deoxycorticosterone (DOC; a synthetic precursor of aldosterone) and central AngII exhibited a marked sodium intake, as classically described. Disruption of inositol trisphosphate signaling, but not extracellular-regulated receptor kinase 1 and 2 signaling, prevented the cooperativity of DOC and AngII on sodium intake. The pattern of expression of the immediate early gene product cFos was used to identify key brain regions that may underlie this behavior. In the paraventricular nuclei (PVN) of the hypothalamus, DOC pretreatment diminished both AngII-induced cFos induction and neurosecretion of oxytocin, a peptide expressed in the PVN. Conversely, in the organum vasculosum lateral terminalis (OVLT), DOC pretreatment augmented cFos expression. Immunohistochemistry identified a substantial presence of oxytocin fibers in the OVLT. In addition, when action potentials in the PVN were inhibited with intraparenchymal lidocaine, AngII-induced sodium ingestion was exaggerated. Intriguingly, this treatment also increased the number of neurons in the OVLT expressing AngII-induced cFos. Collectively, these results suggest that the behavioral cooperativity between DOC and AngII involves the alleviation of an inhibitory oxytocin signal, possibly relayed directly from the PVN to the OVLT

    The relationship between ethnic classroom composition and Turkish-origin and German students’ reading performance and sense of belonging

    Past research on ethnic composition effects on migrant and ethnic majority students’ performance has reported inconclusive results: Some studies have found no relationship between the proportion of migrant students in school and students’ performance, some revealed positive effects, whereas others showed negative effects of the proportion of migrant students. Most of the studies did not consider whether an increase in the proportion of migrant students in the classroom has different effects on migrant and ethnic majority students’ performance. For this reason, the present study (N = 9215) extends previous research by investigating the cross-level interaction effect of the proportion of Turkish-origin students in classrooms on Turkish-origin and German students’ reading performance with data based on the German National Assessment Study 2008/2009 in the school subject German. In addition, we examined the cross-level interaction effect of Turkish-origin students’ proportion on sense of belonging to school of Turkish-origin and German students, as sense of belonging has been shown to be an important predictor of well-being and integration. No cross-level interaction effect on performance emerged. Only a small negative main effect of the Turkish-origin students’ proportion on all students’ performance was found. As predicted, we showed a cross-level interaction on sense of belonging. Only Turkish-origin students’ sense of belonging was positively related to the proportion of Turkish-origin students: The more Turkish-origin students there were in a classroom, the higher Turkish-origin students’ sense of belonging. German students’ sense of belonging was not related to the ethnic classroom composition. Implications of the results in the educational context are discussed

    Endogenous Angiotensin II‐induced p44/42 Mitogen‐Activated Protein Kinase Activation Mediates Sodium Appetite but not Thirst or Neurohypophysial Secretion in Male Rats

    The renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system makes a critical contribution to body fluid homeostasis, and abnormalities in this endocrine system have been implicated in certain forms of hypertension. The peptide hormone angiotensin II (AngII) regulates hydromineral homeostasis and blood pressure by acting on both peripheral and brain targets. In the brain, AngII binds to the angiotensin type 1 receptor (AT1R) to stimulate thirst, sodium appetite and both arginine vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin (OT) secretion. The present study used an experimental model of endogenous AngII to examine the role of p44/42 mitogen‐activated protein kinase (MAPK) as a signalling mechanism to mediate these responses. Animals were given a combined treatment of furosemide and a low dose of captopril (furo/cap), comprising a diuretic and an angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitor, respectively, to elevate endogenous AngII levels in the brain. Furo/cap induced p44/42 MAPK activation in key brain areas that express AT1R, and this effect was reduced with either a centrally administered AT1R antagonist (irbesartan) or a p44/42 MAPK inhibitor (U0126). Additionally, furo/cap treatment elicited water and sodium intake, and irbesartan markedly reduced both of these behaviours. Central injection of U0126 markedly attenuated furo/cap‐induced sodium intake but not water intake. Furthermore, p44/42 MAPK signalling was not necessary for either furo/cap‐ or exogenous AngII‐induced AVP or OT release. Taken together, these results indicate that p44/42 MAPK is required for AngII‐induced sodium appetite but not thirst or neurohypophysial secretion. This result may allow for the discovery of more specific downstream targets of p44/42 MAPK to curb sodium appetite, known to exacerbate hypertension, at the same time as leaving thirst and neurohypophysial hormone secretion undisturbed
