Equations of motion method: Excitation energies and intensities in formaldehyde

    Get PDF
We have used the equations of motion method to study the excitation energies and intensities of electronic transitions in formaldehyde. The calculated excitation energies and oscillator strengths agree well with experiment and suggest explanations for some unusual features recently observed in the optical absorption and electron scattering spectrum of formaldehyde in the vacuum ultraviolet

A method for accurate electron-atom resonances: The complex-scaled multiconfigurational spin-tensor electron propagator method for the ^2P\, \mbox{Be}^{-} shape resonance problem

We propose and develop the complex scaled multiconfigurational spin-tensor electron propagator (CMCSTEP) technique for theoretical determination of resonance parameters with electron-atom/molecule systems including open-shell and highly correlated atoms and molecules. The multiconfigurational spin-tensor electron propagator method (MCSTEP) developed and implemented by Yeager his coworkers in real space gives very accurate and reliable ionization potentials and attachment energies. The CMCSTEP method uses a complex scaled multiconfigurational self-consistent field (CMCSCF) state as an initial state along with a dilated Hamiltonian where all of the electronic coordinates are scaled by a complex factor. CMCSCF was developed and applied successfully to resonance problems earlier. We apply the CMCSTEP method to get ^2 P\,\mbox{Be}^{-} shape resonance parameters using 14s11p5d14s11p5d, 14s14p2d14s14p2d, and 14s14p5d14s14p5d basis sets with a 2s2p3d2s2p3d\,CAS. The obtained value of the resonance parameters are compared to previous results. This is the first time CMCSTEP has been developed and used for a resonance problem. It will be among the most accurate and reliable techniques. Vertical ionization potentials and attachment energies in real space are typically within ±0.2 eV\pm 0.2\,eV or better of excellent experiments and full configuration interaction calculations with a good basis set. We expect the same sort of agreement in complex space.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figue

Government Control of and Influence on the Press in Latin America: The Case of Argentina during the Presidency of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (2007-2014)

    Get PDF
Latin American governments restrict the media for political, historical, and cultural reasons. As these governments trend toward socialism, their influence on media increases. This paper examines methods of media control and investigates whether the increased control leads to bias and inaccuracy of information, both of which jeopardize the functioning of a democratic political system. Four newspapers in Argentina were used as a case study; articles from 2004 to 2013 were evaluated for bias and accuracy. The expected outcome was that newspapers sympathetic toward her administration would become more favorably biased toward her while critical newspapers would become more unfavorably biased. In both cases, the accuracy of reported inflation rates would decrease. The results, however, show three newspapers became more neutral, increasingly printing articles that were not government related or that omitted references to the president. The analysis of the accuracy of the inflation rate was inconclusive due to data limitations

Equations for analyzing the potential gust-induced overspeed tendency of helicopter rotors are presented. A parametric analysis was also carried out to illustrate the sensitivity of rotor angular acceleration to changes in rotor lift, propulsive force, tip speed, and forward velocity

An Assessment of Usage and Physical Activity Patterns, Measurement of Satisfaction Indicators and Purpose of Visit at Two University Recreation Centers

    Get PDF
Research has demonstrated that building of student recreation/activity centers has been beneficial for university students who participate in informal recreation and programs during their out-of-class time. The utilization of an assessment tool created specifically to evaluate variables associated with usage and intention demonstrated that at vastly different university settings and type of recreation facilities, similar patterns suggested why university students are and are not utilizing the facilities that have been specifically built for their needs.;The first paper assessed usage and purpose of visit, and the importance of recreation and socialization in the setting of student recreation centers in university environments. The second paper examined a model of customer satisfaction of facilities, services and information and utilizing multiple regression statistics endeavored to predict overall satisfaction at two separate student recreation centers. Lastly, the third paper examined demographic characteristics of college students and investigated the relationships between these characteristics and physical activity patterns including reasons to exercise, attitudes toward physical activity and which variables would lead to the propensity to exercise vigorously.;Expanding on previous research, these findings will contribute to continuing research in the field of recreation and the importance of physical activity, recreation and socialization on university campuses. The three separate research articles shared a common theme of student interests and satisfaction with facilities on their campus. These findings indicate the need for management to continue to examine and assess the importance of physical activity, recreation and socialization in the setting of college environments
