    Detection of human cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus in symptomatic and asymptomatic apical periodontitis lesions by real-time PCR

    Objectives: Recent studies have investigated the occurrence of human cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr Virus in samples from apical periodontitis lesions and a role in the pathogenesis of this disease has been suggested. Because genotype distribution and seroprevalence of EBV and HCMV differ among populations, it is important to determine the presence of these viruses in endodontic periapical lesions of different populations. The aims of this study were to determine the presence of HCMV and EBV DNAs in samples from Turkish patients with symptomatic and asymptomatic apical periodontitis lesions using real-time polymerase chain reaction method and to evaluate their presence in both symptomatic and asymptomatic apical periodontitis lesions. Study Design: Periapical samples were collected from 12 asymptomatic and 16 symptomatic periapical lesions in conjunction with apicectomy. HCMV and EBV DNAs were identified in the samples by real-time PCR. The chi- squared test with Yates's correction or the Fisher's exact test was used to analyse the significance of differences. Results: HCMV DNA was detected in 10 of the 16 (62.5%) symptomatic and in five of the 12 (41.7 %) asymptomatic periapical study lesions. The EBV DNA was identified in seven of the 16 (43.7 %) symptomatic and three of the 12 (25 %) asymptomatic periapical lesions. The difference in occurrence of HCMV and EBV DNA between symptomatic and asymptomatic periapical lesions was not statistically significant. (All comparisons have p > 0.05). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that HCMV and EBV is a frequent inhabitant of both symptomatic and asymptomatic apical periodontitis lesions of endodontic origin in Turkish population

    Anthropometric and Physical Performance Characteristics of Swimmers

    Introduction: The study of body measurements and proportions by anthropometry is important for the identification of young talents in swimming. Therefore, the aim of this study was to a) compare the physical performance profile of swimmers on land and in water and b) understand the relationship between anthropometric and physical performance tests. Methods: To this end, 31 anthropometric variables were determined in 6 male (n=3) and female (n=3) swimmers using the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK) protocols and VO2max laboratory tests. Body fractionation (adipose, muscle, bone, residual, and skin tissue masses) was determined using the validated Kerr & Ross five-way fractionation model for body composition. Data analysis included the person correlation coefficient. Results: The swimming performance test was positively strongly correlated with body height, seat height, arm span, shoulder and pelvic width, and arm and leg length (p ≤ 0.001). In conclusion, these studies reveal some potential key anthropometric factors in the performance of active swimmers. These results support the view that while swimmers have unique anthropometric profiles, more successful swimmers tend to have greater arm spans. Conclusion: These results suggest that anthropometric characteristics are important in swimming performance. This study concluded that improvement in swimming performance is strongly related to anthropometric and kinanthropometric profiles.Introducción: El estudio de las medidas y proporciones corporales por antropometría es importante para la identificación de jóvenes talentos en la natación. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de este estudio fue a) comparar el perfil de rendimiento físico de nadadores en tierra y en agua yb) comprender la relación entre las pruebas antropométricas y de rendimiento físico. Métodos: Para ello, se determinaron 31 variables antropométricas en 6 nadadores masculinos (n=3) y femeninos (n=3) utilizando los protocolos de la Sociedad Internacional para el Avance de la Cineantropometría (ISAK) y pruebas de laboratorio de VO2max. El fraccionamiento corporal (masa de tejido adiposo, muscular, óseo, residual y de la piel) se determinó utilizando el modelo de fraccionamiento de cinco vías validado de Kerr & Ross para la composición corporal. El análisis de datos incluyó el coeficiente de correlación persona. Resultados: La prueba de rendimiento de natación se correlacionó positivamente con la altura del cuerpo, la altura del asiento, la extensión de los brazos, el ancho de los hombros y la pelvis, y la longitud de los brazos y las piernas (p ≤ 0,001). En conclusión, estos estudios revelan algunos posibles factores antropométricos clave en el rendimiento de los nadadores activos. Estos resultados respaldan la opinión de que, si bien los nadadores tienen perfiles antropométricos únicos, los nadadores más exitosos tienden a tener una mayor amplitud de brazos. Conclusión: Estos resultados sugieren que las características antropométricas son importantes en el rendimiento de natación. Este estudio concluyó que la mejora en el rendimiento de natación está fuertemente relacionada con los perfiles antropométricos y cineantropométricos

    Leptospirosis during the COVID-19 pandemic: a case report

    ms. Leptospirosis is one of the most common zoonoses in the world, yet it is mainly a disease of differential diagnosis for places that do not have it as an endemic. Due to the high burden of COVID-19 on the healthcare field, patients suffering from other infections may have been inadvertently neglected. COVID-19 infection can mimic other infectious diseases and can confuse physicians in their search for a confirmatory diagnosis. Nonetheless, it is very crucial to broaden the differential diagnosis and keep diseases like leptospirosis within the differential diagnosis despite its rarity, especially in patients presenting with unexplained systemic infectious symptoms. This is a unique case of a patient who presented with dyspnea, jaundice and change in urine color who was suspected to be COVID-19 positive. After a detailed investigation, the patient was diagnosed with leptospirosis instead of COVID-19 and was treated with plasmapheresis and antibiotics accordingly

    G protein gene variants in schizophrenia

    Various studies demonstrating enhanced vulnerability to apoptosis may contribute to the pathobiology of schizophrenia. Objective: Thus, G proteins may provide an intriguing link between the signal transduction, and apoptotic hypotheses of schizophrenia. In the light of these findings, we investigated whether G protein gene polymorphisms (GNAS1-T393C and GNB3-C825T) accounted for an increased risk of schizophrenia. Methods: The present analyses were based on 100 subjects diagnosed with schizophrenia, and on 100 unrelated healthy controls. The genotyping of GNAS1-T393C, and GNB3-C825T gene polymorphisms were performed using the polymerase chain reaction- restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Results: We demonstrated the positive association of GNB3-C825T gene variants with schizophrenia risk (p: 0.023). In our study, more prevalent CC genotype frequencies were detected in GNB3 in patients compared with the frequencies in the controls. The individuals with GNB3-C825T CC genotype had 2 fold increased risk for schizophrenia (p: 0.011, c2: 6.39, OR:2.14, 95% CI: 1.18-3.90). Discussion: Our study results suggested that GNB3-C825T polymorphism might be associated with schizophrenia

    Chromium picolinate and chromium histidinate protects against renal dysfunction by modulation of NF-κB pathway in high-fat diet fed and Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Diabetic nephropathy is one of major complications of diabetes mellitus. Although chromium is an essential element for carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, its effects on diabetic nephropathy are not well understood. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of chromium picolinate (CrPic) and chromium histidinate (CrHis) on nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and nuclear factor-E2-related factor-2 (Nrf2) pathway in the rat kidney.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Male Wistar rats were divided into six groups. Group I received a standard diet (8% fat) and served as a control; Group II was fed with a standard diet and received CrPic; Group III was fed with a standard diet and received CrHis; Group IV received a high fat diet (HFD, 40% fat) for 2 weeks and then were injected with streptozotocin (STZ) (HFD/STZ); Group V was treated as group IV (HFD/STZ) but supplemented with CrPic for 12 weeks. Group VI was treated as group IV (HFD/STZ) but supplemented with CrHis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The increased NF-κβ p65 in the HFD/STZ group was inhibited by CrPic and CrHis supplementation (<it>P </it>< 0.05). In STZ-treated rats, a significant decrease in levels of nuclear factor of kappa light polypeptide gene enhancer in B-cells inhibitor, alpha (IκBα) was found in kidney tissues when compared to control rats (<it>P </it>< 0.05). A significant increase in the levels of IκBα was observed in CrPic- and CrHis-treated rats when compared with STZ-treated rats. Renal Nrf2 levels were significantly decreased in diabetic rats compared with the control rats. There was a higher tendency for increase of kidney Nrf2 level and decrease in kidney NFκBp65 levels and 4- hydroxyl nonenal (4-HNE) protein adducts (<it>P </it>< 0.05) in diabetic rats.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our result show that in kidney tissue CrHis/CrPic increases Nrf2 level, parallelly decreases NF-κB and partially restores IκBα levels in HFD/STZ group, suggesting that CrPic and CrHis may play a role in antioxidant defense system via the Nrf2 pathway by reducing inflammation through NF-κβ p65 inhibition. Moreover, a greater reduction in NF-κB expression and greater increases in expressions of IκBα and Nrf2 in diabetic rats supplemented with CrHis than rats supplemented with CrPic suggest that CrHis has more favorable effects than CrPic.</p

    Feelings of burden among family caregivers of people with spinal cord injury in Turkey

    Study design: The study was designed as a cross-sectional survey. Objectives: The purpose of the study was to examine the level of feelings of burden in family caregivers of people with spinal cord injury (SCI) in Turkey, and to explore its predictors. Setting: Turkey. Methods: One hundred family caregivers of people with SCI completed measures of burden of caregiving, depression, social support and physical health. The SCI participants completed a measure of functional independence. Multivariate statistics and structural equation modeling (SEM) were conducted to identify significant predictors of caregiver burden. Results: Caregiver burden was significantly related to caregivers’ feelings of depression. SEM analysis showed that social support from family and from friends predicted caregiver burden via depression. Caregivers’ age, sex, educational level, physical health and household income did not significantly predict their feelings of depression or burden. Conclusions: Our findings revealed that support received from both families and friends is an important source for alleviating the depressive feelings of caregivers and, in return, their burden in the caregiving. In Turkey, high support from family members is expected and is important for psychological well-being, yet the current study showed that the support received from friends also has unique contribution to the well-being of the caregivers of persons with SCI.
