    Intermittency and Structure of a Jet Exhausting into a Stratified Fluid

    This preliminary study of the mechanism by which local turbulent regions generate internal gravity waves in a stably stratified fluid is based on comparisons of the visual and hot-film- anemometer observations of a jet exhausting into a stratified fluid with those for a jet exhausting into a homogeneous medium. The stratified environment limits the growth of the mean jet boundary, or from another point of view, inhibits the vertical motion of the instantaneous turbulent/non-turbulent interface. The visual and non-conditional statistical averages agree with expectations and with previous measurements in stratified turbulent wakes. Application of a standard criterion to determine the intermittency function for both the stratified and homogeneous cases gives conflicting results. Modification of the intermittency trigger level in the stratified case based on the local turbulence intensity ratio resolves this conflict and indicates that the effect of stratification on the local turbulence properties must be taken into account if the conditionally averaged details of these flows are to be studied further

    Photon noise limited radiation detection with lens-antenna coupled Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors

    Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) have shown great potential for sub-mm instrumentation because of the high scalability of the technology. Here we demonstrate for the first time in the sub-mm band (0.1...2 mm) a photon noise limited performance of a small antenna coupled MKID detector array and we describe the relation between photon noise and MKID intrinsic generation-recombination noise. Additionally we use the observed photon noise to measure the optical efficiency of detectors to be 0.8+-0.2.Comment: The following article has been submitted to AP

    The cancer nurse coordinator service in Western Australia: Perspectives of specialist cancer nurse coordinators

    Objective: In Western Australia the cancer nurse coordinator (CNC) role is unique, state wide and situated in nursing. It requires the domains of clinical expert, resource consultant, educator, change agent, researcher and advocate to facilitate seamless coordination of care for patients across metropolitan, rural and remote geographical areas of Western Australia. This study examined the role, function and impact of CNCs from the perspective of coordinators themselves. Design: Prospective two-phase mixed method study. This paper reports data from the Self Report Activity Questionnaire in Phase one. Setting: The state-wide Western Australian Cancer Nurse Coordinator Service. Subjects: Metropolitan and rural CNCs (n=18) who had worked in the role for at least six months. Results: Overall, CNCs spent 70% of time in clinical consultation and 41% of CNCs reported having an educational role. Most CNCs (71%) noted that at least half of their patients had complex psychosocial needs at referral. Key role-related activities related to direct nursing care and patient education were performed most frequently on a daily basis. Tasks related to care management planning, patient advocacy and multidisciplinary clinical care were performed weekly. Strategic, team communication and professional development activities were performed less frequently. Conclusion: Diversity of the CNC role was demonstrated with findings showing that CNCs fulfilled the core components of the specialist cancer nurse. Given the clear need to provide consistent support to cancer patients in an increasingly individualised and integrated manner, we consider the CNC role a fundamental element of quality cancer care

    Statistical sensitivity for detection of spatial and temporal patterns in rodent population densities.

    A long-term monitoring program begun 1 year after the epidemic of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in the U.S. Southwest tracked rodent density changes through time and among sites and related these changes to hantavirus infection rates in various small-mammal reservoir species and human disease outbreaks. We assessed the statistical sensitivity of the program's field design and tested for potential biases in population estimates due to unintended deaths of rodents. Analyzing data from two sites in New Mexico from 1994 to 1998, we found that for many species of Peromyscus, Reithrodontomys, Neotoma, Dipodomys, and Perognathus, the monitoring program detected species-specific spatial and temporal differences in rodent densities; trap-related deaths did not significantly affect long-term population estimates. The program also detected a short-term increase in rodent densities in the winter of 1997-98, demonstrating its usefulness in identifying conditions conducive to increased risk for human disease

    Performance of Hybrid NbTiN-Al Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors as Direct Detectors for Sub-millimeter Astronomy

    In the next decades millimeter and sub-mm astronomy requires large format imaging arrays and broad-band spectrometers to complement the high spatial and spectral resolution of the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array. The desired sensors for these instruments should have a background limited sensitivity and a high optical efficiency and enable arrays thousands of pixels in size. Hybrid microwave kinetic inductance detectors consisting of NbTiN and Al have shown to satisfy these requirements. We present the second generation hybrid NbTiN-Al MKIDs, which are photon noise limited in both phase and amplitude readout for loading levels P850GHz≥10P_{850GHz} \geq 10 fW. Thanks to the increased responsivity, the photon noise level achieved in phase allows us to simultaneously read out approximately 8000 pixels using state-of-the-art electronics. In addition, the choice of superconducting materials and the use of a Si lens in combination with a planar antenna gives these resonators the flexibility to operate within the frequency range 0.09<ν<1.10.09 < \nu < 1.1 THz. Given these specifications, hybrid NbTiN-Al MKIDs will enable astronomically usable kilopixel arrays for sub-mm imaging and moderate resolution spectroscopy.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures.     Consequences of increased CD45RA and RC isoforms for TCR signaling and peripheral T cell deficiency resulting from heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein L-like mutation

    CD45 is the most abundant protein tyrosine phosphatase in the plasma membrane of T cells and serves a critical role in TCR signaling. Different CD45 isoforms are made by alternative mRNA splicing depending on the stage of T cell development and activation, yet their role remains unclear. Expression of CD45RA and RC isoforms is increased 20- to 200-fold on T cells from thunder mice with a loss-of-function mutation in the RNA-binding protein, heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein L-like (hnRNPLL), although total CD45 expression is unaltered. In this study, we test the hypothesis that this shift in CD45 isoform expression alters TCR signaling, thymic selection, and accumulation of peripheral T cells. There was no discernable effect of the change in CD45 isoform expression upon Lck phosphorylation or T cell positive and negative selection, whereas these indices were strongly affected by a decrease in the overall amount of CD45 in Ptprc mutant animals. The one exception to this conclusion was in thymocytes from Ptprcloc/loc animals with 4% of normal CD45 protein levels, where Lck505 phosphorylation was increased 25% in Hnrpll mutant cells, suggesting that high m.w. CD45 isoforms had lower Lck505 phosphatase activity in this context. In T cells with no CD45 protein, hnRNPLL mutation still diminished peripheral T cell accumulation, demonstrating that hnRNPLL regulates T cell longevity independently from its effects on CD45 splicing

    Use of Coconut COIR in Fiber Reinforced Concrete, Soil and Lime

    The use of lime as a binder and natural fibers as reinforcements have been in use since ancient human history. However, ordinary Portland cement and concrete have substituted these comparatively cheaper eco-friendlier materials due to their quick setting and strength parameters since the 19th century. However, their large-scale impact on the environment due to greenhouse gases emission has encouraged further research to develop novel composite materials comprising natural fibers like coconut coir and lime as partial cement substitute. In this review study, contemporary research studies conducted by different researchers were explored and has found this field quite encouraging and progressive for modern trends in construction materials. Coir is a material with great potential due to its high strength and ductility comparable to steel; the use of lime or saline treated coir in cement by 1% as optimum quantity and in some cases up to 2% quantity, enhanced the compressive, tensile and flexural strengths up to 5%-20%. Ductility and flexibility of concrete improved with more energy absorption capacity. However, more use of coir did not improve engineering properties of concrete rather deteriorated after 2% use by weight of cement. 1% to 2% coir use in expensive marine soil augmented by 5% use of lime revealed considerable increase in engineering properties of soil especially increase of compressive strength by 1.5 times, increase of compaction factor and plasticity and reduction in shrinkage and liquid limit thus supporting a fruitful use of coir and lime mixture in its properties enhancement. Coir being a natural fiber has a limitation of lesser degradation life so needs to be treated with some suitable natural coating material to enhance its life from 3 to 20 years and needs to be cleaned properly by soaking in lime or saline water to remove lignin, pith, cellulose and silicate crystals. The overall use of coir and lime as substituent of cement binders is highly recommended though further research is required to maximize usage for this economical and eco-friendly material
