Kinetics of chain collapse in dilute polymer solutions: Molecular weight and solvent dependences

    Get PDF
The molecular weight and solvent dependences of the characteristic time of chain collapse were studied for poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) of the molecular weight Mw =6.4× 106 and 1.14× 107 in pure acetonitrile (AcN) and in the mixed solvent of AcN+water (10 vol %). The size of PMMA chains was measured as a function of the time after the quench by static light scattering and the chain collapse processes were expressed by the plot of the expansion factor α2 vs ln t. The chain collapse in the mixed solvent AcN+water (10 vol %) was found to occur much faster than that in pure AcN, though the measurement of the former collapse process required several hours. In order to make a comparison between the rates of chain collapses, the fast chain collapse process was superposed on the slow one by scaling the time of the fast process as γt. The scale factor γ was determined by comparing the chain collapse processes of nearly the same equilibrium expansion factor with each other. Accordingly, the superposition of the collapse for Mw =6.4× 106 on that for Mw =1.14× 107 yielded γm =4.0±0.6 for the process in AcN+water and 5.5±0.6 in AcN. The superposition of the chain collapse process in AcN+water on that in AcN yielded γs =9.5±1.4 for Mw =6.4× 106 and 12.0±1.8 for Mw =1.14× 107. This analysis suggests that γm and γs are constant independent of each other. Thus, by assuming the molecular weight dependence of γm ∼ Mz, the characteristic time τexp of chain collapse was conjectured as τexp ∼κ Mz, where κ reflects the nature of solvent species. The ratio of κ for PMMA in AcN to that in AcN+water is given by γs. The exponent was estimated to be z=2.4±0.7 for AcN+water and 3.0±0.7 for AcN. These values are compatible with the theoretical prediction z=3 based on a phenomenological model, though the observed characteristic times are longer by several orders of magnitude than those of the theoretical prediction

Psychological characteristics of Japanese patients with chronic pain assessed by the Rorschach test

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The increasing number of patients with chronic pain in Japan has become a major issue in terms of the patient's quality of life, medical costs, and related social problems. Pain is a multi-dimensional experience with physiological, affective, cognitive, behavioral and social components, and recommended to be managed via a combination of bio-psycho-social aspects. However, a biomedical approach is still the dominant method of pain treatment in Japan. The current study aimed to evaluate comprehensive psychological functions and processes in Japanese chronic pain patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The Rorschach Comprehensive System was administered to 49 in-patients with non-malignant chronic pain. Major variables and frequencies from the test were then compared to normative data from non-patient Japanese adults by way of the t-test and chi-square test.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Patients exhibited high levels of emotional distress with a sense of helplessness with regard to situational stress, confusion, and ambivalent feelings. These emotions were managed by the patients in an inappropriate manner. Cognitive functions resulted in moderate dysfunction in all stages. Information processing tended to focus upon minute features in an inflexible manner. Mediational dysfunction was likely to occur with unstable affective conditions. Ideation was marked by pessimistic and less effective thinking. Since patients exhibited negative self-perception, their interpersonal relationship skills tended to be ineffective. Originally, our patients displayed average psychological resources for control, stress tolerance, and social skills for interpersonal relationships. However, patient coping styles were either situation- or emotion-dependent, and patients were more likely to exhibit emotional instability influenced by external stimuli, resulting in increased vulnerability to pain.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Data gathered from the Rorschach test suggested psychological approaches to support chronic pain patients that are likely to be highly beneficial, and we thus recommend their incorporation into the course of current pain treatments.</p

Therapeutic effect of aged garlic extract on gingivitis in dogs

Periodontal disease is one of the most common dental health problems in dogs. Clinical studies in humans have shown that aged garlic extract (AGE), which contains stable and water-soluble sulfur-containing bioactive compounds, improves the symptoms of periodontal diseases. Our previous study demonstrated that oral administration of AGE in healthy Beagle dogs at 90 mg/kg/day for 12 weeks had no adverse effects such as hemolytic anemia, which is well known to occur as a result of ingestion of Allium species, including onions and garlic, in dogs. However, the therapeutic potential of AGE in canine periodontal disease remains unclear. Accordingly, we investigated the therapeutic effects of AGE in Beagle dogs with mild gingivitis. Feeding 18 mg/kg/day of AGE for 8 weeks resulted in the improvement of gingival index score, level of volatile sulfur compounds in exhaled air, and enzyme activity of periodontal pathogens without any adverse effects on clinical signs and hematological and serum biochemical parameters. Moreover, AGE increased the concentration of salivary cathelicidin, an antimicrobial peptide that contributes to the oral innate immune response. These results suggest that AGE could be a potential therapeutic agent for canine gingivitis

Brain Training Game Improves Executive Functions and Processing Speed in the Elderly: A Randomized Controlled Trial

The beneficial effects of brain training games are expected to transfer to other cognitive functions, but these beneficial effects are poorly understood. Here we investigate the impact of the brain training game (Brain Age) on cognitive functions in the elderly.Thirty-two elderly volunteers were recruited through an advertisement in the local newspaper and randomly assigned to either of two game groups (Brain Age, Tetris). This study was completed by 14 of the 16 members in the Brain Age group and 14 of the 16 members in the Tetris group. To maximize the benefit of the interventions, all participants were non-gamers who reported playing less than one hour of video games per week over the past 2 years. Participants in both the Brain Age and the Tetris groups played their game for about 15 minutes per day, at least 5 days per week, for 4 weeks. Each group played for a total of about 20 days. Measures of the cognitive functions were conducted before and after training. Measures of the cognitive functions fell into four categories (global cognitive status, executive functions, attention, and processing speed). Results showed that the effects of the brain training game were transferred to executive functions and to processing speed. However, the brain training game showed no transfer effect on any global cognitive status nor attention. Our results showed that playing Brain Age for 4 weeks could lead to improve cognitive functions (executive functions and processing speed) in the elderly. This result indicated that there is a possibility which the elderly could improve executive functions and processing speed in short term training. The results need replication in large samples. Long-term effects and relevance for every-day functioning remain uncertain as yet.UMIN Clinical Trial Registry 000002825

The Hitomi (ASTRO-H) mission is the sixth Japanese x-ray astronomy satellite developed by a large international collaboration, including Japan, USA, Canada, and Europe. The mission aimed to provide the highest energy resolution ever achieved at E  >  2  keV, using a microcalorimeter instrument, and to cover a wide energy range spanning four decades in energy from soft x-rays to gamma rays. After a successful launch on February 17, 2016, the spacecraft lost its function on March 26, 2016, but the commissioning phase for about a month provided valuable information on the onboard instruments and the spacecraft system, including astrophysical results obtained from first light observations. The paper describes the Hitomi (ASTRO-H) mission, its capabilities, the initial operation, and the instruments/spacecraft performances confirmed during the commissioning operations for about a month
