A rare case of giant dermoid cyst with ipsilateral paratubal cystadenoma during pregnancy

Dermoid cysts are considered the most common ovarian cysts in adolescents and pregnant women. In rare cases, they can attain a huge size. Paratubal cysts are also common in adolescents. They are usually simple cysts present in the broad ligament. In this case, we report a giant dermoid cyst with ipsilateral paratubal serous cystadenoma discovered during pregnancy of a 20-year-old primigravida. Both cysts were managed conservatively, and then removed successfully at the time of cesarean section by cystectomy

Global prevalence and genotype distribution of hepatitis C virus infection in 2015 : A modelling study

Publisher Copyright: © 2017 Elsevier LtdBackground The 69th World Health Assembly approved the Global Health Sector Strategy to eliminate hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection by 2030, which can become a reality with the recent launch of direct acting antiviral therapies. Reliable disease burden estimates are required for national strategies. This analysis estimates the global prevalence of viraemic HCV at the end of 2015, an update of—and expansion on—the 2014 analysis, which reported 80 million (95% CI 64–103) viraemic infections in 2013. Methods We developed country-level disease burden models following a systematic review of HCV prevalence (number of studies, n=6754) and genotype (n=11 342) studies published after 2013. A Delphi process was used to gain country expert consensus and validate inputs. Published estimates alone were used for countries where expert panel meetings could not be scheduled. Global prevalence was estimated using regional averages for countries without data. Findings Models were built for 100 countries, 59 of which were approved by country experts, with the remaining 41 estimated using published data alone. The remaining countries had insufficient data to create a model. The global prevalence of viraemic HCV is estimated to be 1·0% (95% uncertainty interval 0·8–1·1) in 2015, corresponding to 71·1 million (62·5–79·4) viraemic infections. Genotypes 1 and 3 were the most common cause of infections (44% and 25%, respectively). Interpretation The global estimate of viraemic infections is lower than previous estimates, largely due to more recent (lower) prevalence estimates in Africa. Additionally, increased mortality due to liver-related causes and an ageing population may have contributed to a reduction in infections. Re-imaging Palestine in selected poems from Handal’s the lives of rain

This paper investigates Nathalie Handal’s re-imaging of Palestine as the Promised Land. Such a re-imaging is crystallized through two perspectives: identity politics, which spotlights two distinctively separated groups, viz., the Palestinians and the Israelis, and shared/global identity which depends on transcendence to common humanity. Handal is a French-American poet, born in Haiti to a Palestinian family from Bethlehem. She has lived in different places in Europe, the US and Arab World. She reconstructs an image of Palestine from family memories and from her strong sense of belonging enhanced by frequent journeys to Palestine in the hope that she might have a home in poetry. In many poems such as “Ephratha” , “Bethlehem”, “ Regrets in Galilee”, “Jenin”, “Gaza City”, “Haifa”, “Baladna” and “Amrika” , Handal recalls a geomental image of home. However, a geopolitical image of home is put in juxtaposition in order to highlight Handal’s journey for obtaining global identity. I argue that the two perspectives, which are intricately intertwined in Handal’s poems due to her life and travels, provide a version of complete portrait of Palestine

Epidemiology of dysmenorrhea among workers in Upper Egypt; A cross sectional study

Objective: To investigate the epidemiology of dysmenorrhea amongst women in two textile factories in Beni-Suef, Egypt compared to non-working controls. Study design: A cross sectional study. Setting: Beni-Suef, Egypt. Materials and methods: The study was conducted on 554 working women in two textile factories in Beni-Suef and 1081 non-working women, matched for age and residence. A structured questionnaire was used and a team of data collectors interviewed the women. The questionnaire included questions about the socio-demographic characteristics of women, history of dysmenorrhea during the past 12 months, associating symptoms, pain relief methods, and sources of information. Results: The study reported higher rates of dysmenorrhea during the past 12 months (94.6%) amongst the working women, compared to their controls (90.7%) (p < 0.05). Backaches, generalized aching and nervousness were the most likely symptoms reported with menstruation72.2%, 56.3% and 41% respectively. More than half of the working women who experienced dysmenorrhea reported drinking herbal fluids and taking analgesics to alleviate their symptoms, while 43% had to take sick leaves due to their condition. Women in the study group resorted mostly to family members to get information about menstruation and menstrual disturbances. Conclusions: Dysmenorrhea is highly prevalent among women working in the textile factories in Beni-Suef. Further research should focus on the adaptive strategies used by women to avoid the negative impacts of dysmenorrhea. Structuring occupational health programs that handle the menstrual disorders amongst the working women, especially in the industrial settings, should be considered

Prevalence and patterns of female sexual dysfunction among overweight and obese premenopausal women in Upper Egypt; a cross sectional study

Objective: Obesity is a growing public health concern. Many reports link obesity to female sexuality. The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence and patterns of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) among overweight and obese premenopausal women in Beni-Suef, Egypt. Study design: A cross sectional study. Setting: Beni-Suef, Egypt. Subjects and methods: 150 premenopausal non-pregnant married women were enrolled for the study. Socio-demographic characteristics and obstetric history were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Sexual dysfunction was assessed using the Arabic version of female sexual function index (ArFSFI). Results: The mean age of the participating women was 31.2 ± 7.3 years and the mean BMI was 27.5 ± 1.9 kg/m2. Circumcision was reported by 59.3% of women. Precisely, 42 (28%) of women had FSD. Pain, lubrication and arousal were the most common reported problems 69.3%, 53.3% and 52%, respectively. Obese women were more likely to have desire, arousal and lubrication problems compared to the overweight. FSFI total score correlated negatively with age of women, marriage duration and parity (p  0.05). Conclusion: Problems in pain, lubrication and arousal were the most common patterns of sexual dysfunction among overweight Egyptian women. Further research over the effect of certain interventional programs on FSD should be considered

Can Wearable Devices Accurately Measure Heart Rate Variability? A Systematic Review

    No full text
Background: A growing number of wearable devices claim to provide accurate, cheap and easily applicable heart rate variability (HRV) indices. This is mainly accomplished by using wearable photoplethysmography (PPG) and/or electrocardiography (ECG), through simple and non-invasive techniques, as a substitute of the gold standard RR interval estimation through electrocardiogram. Although the agreement between pulse rate variability (PRV) and HRV has been evaluated in the literature, the reported results are still inconclusive especially when using wearable devices
