    Results of newborn hearing screening in tepecik education and research hospital

    Objectives: This study aimed to emphasize the significance of newborn hearing screening for detecting congenital hearing loss within the first 6 months of birth. Methods: The data of 5399 infants born in the Izmir University of Health Science Tepecik Training and Research Hospital, Izmir, Turkey, and screened for hearing between January 2018 and December 2018 was presented in this study. All term, preterm, and asphytic newborn deliveries in the aforementioned hospital were included. The hearing screening was conducted using the auditory brainstem response (ABR) method. The first step involves the evaluation of the results of all infants before being discharged from the hospital and, the second step involves infants with problems in the results of their first step and subjected to advance testing. Results: This study included 5399 infants in the first and second steps. Of these infants, 5231 (96.9%) passed the first step. Consequently, 136 (2.5%) of the 168 infants evaluated in the second step passed it, while 32 (0.6%) of the infants were evaluated again in more detail in the third step. Six (0.2%) of the infants were not called for further evaluation, and 5 (0.2%) were diagnosed with advanced/very advanced bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Conclusion: Congenital hearing loss negatively affects the child's language, speaking, communication, and cognitive skills. Newborn hearing screening has an important place in the early diagnosis of congenital hearing loss. The number of diagnosed and treated babies suffering from hearing loss is increasing as the number of hearing screening tests becomes widespread in Turkey. © Anatolian Journal of Family Medicine 2021

    An unusual finding after adrenal surgery: a case series of adrenal schwannomas

    Adrenal schwannomas are rare benign tumors with no specific imaging and laboratory findings to diagnose preoperatively. Due to the limited number of cases in the literature, clinical, imaging, and pathological findings are presented in this study. Case 1 is a 61-year-old woman patient who has a 31-mm mass in the right adrenal gland. This mass was nonfunctional; in imaging studies, this mass had a cystic necrotic component, and high 18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake was seen. There was no metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) uptake. Laparoscopic transabdominal right adrenalectomy was performed, and the pathology result was consistent with adrenal schwannomas. Case 2 is a 63-year-old man patient who presented with a 38-mm mass in the left adrenal gland. This mass was nonfunctional and similar to that in Case 1; this mass had a cystic component. Laparoscopic transabdominal left adrenalectomy was performed. The diagnosis of adrenal schwannoma with degeneration was revealed. Case 3 was a 72-year-old woman patient admitted to the hospital for a 125-mm left adrenal mass. Similar to Case 1, this mass also had a cystic necrotic component in imaging studies. High FDG uptake was seen, and the patient underwent conventional adrenalectomy due to the suspicion of malignancy. After pathological evaluation, a diagnosis of adrenal schwannoma was made. A main diagnostic challenge in adrenal schwannomas is the preoperative diagnosis. These masses have no pathognomonic finding or specific hormonal function. Imaging findings of these masses may increase the suspicion of malignancy, which may affect decisions for surgery and the surgical technique

    COVID-19 in pediatric nephrology centers in Turkey

    Background/aim: There is limited data on COVID-19 disease in children with kidney disease. We aimed to investigate the characteristics and prognosis of COVID-19 in pediatric nephrology patients in Turkey. Materials and methods: This was a national, multicenter, retrospective cohort study based on an online survey evaluating the data between 11th March 2020 and 11th March 2021 as an initial step of a detailed pediatric nephrology COVID-19 registry. Results: Two hundred and three patients (89 girls and 114 boys) were diagnosed with COVID-19. One-third of these patients (36.9%) were between 10–15 years old. Half of the patients were on kidney replacement therapy: kidney transplant (KTx) recipients (n = 56, 27.5%), patients receiving chronic hemodialysis (n = 33, 16.3%) and those on peritoneal dialysis (PD) (n = 18, 8.9%). Fifty-four (26.6%) children were asymptomatic. Eighty-two (40.3%) patients were hospitalized and 23 (28%) needed intensive care unit admission. Fifty-five percent of the patients were not treated, while the remaining was given favipiravir (20.7%), steroid (16.3%), and hydroxychloroquine (11.3%). Acute kidney injury developed in 19.5% of hospitalized patients. Five (2.4%) had MIS-C. Eighty-three percent of the patients were discharged without any apparent sequelae, while 7 (3.4%) died. One hundred and eight health care staff were infected during the study period. Conclusion: COVID-19 was most commonly seen in patients who underwent KTx and received HD. The combined immunosuppressive therapy and frequent exposure to the hospital setting may increase these patients’ susceptibility. Staff infections before vaccination era were alarming, various precautions should be taken for infection control, particularly optimal vaccination coverage

    Durability and Shrinkage Characteristics of Self-Compacting Concretes Containing Recycled Coarse and/or Fine Aggregates

    This paper addresses durability and shrinkage performance of the self-compacting concretes (SCCs) in which natural coarse aggregate (NCA) and/or natural fine aggregate (NFA) were replaced by recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) and/or recycled fine aggregate (RFA), respectively. A total of 16 SCCs were produced and classified into four series, each of which included four mixes designed with two water to binder (w/b) ratios of 0.3 and 0.43 and two silica fume replacement levels of 0 and 10%. Durability properties of SCCs were tested for rapid chloride penetration, water sorptivity, gas permeability, and water permeability at 56 days. Also, drying shrinkage accompanied by the water loss and restrained shrinkage of SCCs were monitored over 56 days of drying period. Test results revealed that incorporating recycled coarse and/or fine aggregates aggravated the durability properties of SCCs tested in this study. The drying shrinkage and restrained shrinkage cracking of recycled aggregate (RA) concretes had significantly poorer performance than natural aggregate (NA) concretes. The time of cracking greatly prolonged as the RAs were used along with the increase in water/binder ratio

    Failure characteristics of self-compacting concretes made with recycled aggregates

    WOS: 000363069800036This study addresses the properties of self-compacting concretes (SCCs) produced with recycled coarse aggregates (RCAs) and/or recycled fine aggregates (RFAs) compared to SCCs with natural aggregates (NAs). The SCC mixtures were designed with a constant slump flow of 680 +/- 30 mm and two water/binder (w/b) ratios of 0.3 and 0.43. Silica fume (SF) was also used at two replacement levels of 0% and 10%. Hardened properties of the SCCs were evaluated in terms of compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, static modulus of elasticity, and net flexural strength after 56 days of water curing. Failure mechanism of the concretes was also monitored via three-point bending test on the notched beams. The results indicated that failure occurred throughout the recycled aggregates (RAs) which in-turn decreased the mechanical properties of SCCs. However, SCCs with both fine and coarse RAs (RCAs + RFAs) had relatively worse performance than those with only RCAs or RFAs such that the reduction in strength was about 30% as compared to the corresponding reference mixes.     Parent's report on oral health-related quality of life of children with cystic fibrosis

    Background Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scales are now widely used in children with cystic fibrosis (cwCF) which reflects the course of the disease. In this cross-sectional study, our primary aim was to compare the Pediatric Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (POQL) and Oral Health Score (OHS) between cwCF and healthy group. Our secondary aim was to evaluate the association between Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) colonization, pulmonary function test, OHS and POQL in cwCF. Methods The study population (age ranging 6-14) included 55 cwCF followed at the Marmara University Division of Pediatric Pulmonology compared with 50 healthy peers. A survey consisted of general questions (age, sex, etc.) and the POQL instrument were filled by parents. The decayed, missing, and filled teeth for both primary (dft) and permanent dentition (DMFT) was detected according to WHO criteria. Data like current body mass index (BMI z score), colonization status with PA, predicted value for forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1pp), and any hospitalizations during the previous year were obtained from their medical. Differences between the groups were evaluated using Chi-square and Mann-Whitney U test with a significance level set at 0.05. Results There was no significant difference between PA-colonized cwCF and healthy controls in DMFT (p = 0.916). For all domains of POQL (emotional function, social function, role function), scores of cwCF were significantly better than healthy controls (p 0.05). Conclusion Although POQL scores of cwCF were encouraging, dental caries prevention and regular follow-ups should be taken into consideration

    Aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between choose a contraceptive method and demographic values in patients who examined in our family planning clinic. This study included 252 patients who want to choose a contraceptive method to prevent pregnancy in Zekai Tahir Burak Women Health and Resource Hospital family planning clinic. Risk factors recorded were age, gravidity, parity, duration of marriage, education status, systemic disease and selected contraceptive method. The mean age of the study group was 30.4±8.6 and the mean of the duration of marriage, gravidity, parity were 9.4±6.2(0-12) years, 3.1±1.6 (0-7), 2.6±1.4 (0-5); respectively. The most commonly used method were coitus interruptus (% 30.6). The frequency of other methods were; intrauterine device (IUD) (%29.7),oral contraceptives (%15.1), condom (%11.5), tubal ligation (% 3.1), depot progesterone (%9.12), subcutaneous implants (%0.8); respectively.
