Effect of memory load on eye movement control: A study using the reading span test

    Get PDF
We investigated the effect of memory load on attentional control using the Reading Span Test (RST), a task that requires working memory capacity. Previous studies have shown that a shortage of working memory resources leads to a deficit of inhibition of taskirrelevant information and that memory load affects eye movement control. Here, we recorded eye movement and integrated it with RST performance. Total fixation time and the number of regressions showed a memory load effect with the to-be-remembered word, and RST performance was also affected under high memory load. We concluded that a shortage of working memory resources caused by memory load prevents flexible eye movement control and may cause a deficit in inhibitory control based on intrusion errors

ABSTRACTSmall scale industries are gaining importance and their contribution to pollution problems cannot be ignored. One of small scale industry having the potential to cause environment problems is centralized of small scale tapioca industries. Small scale industries typically have limited space for the installation of treatment system. In addition, often small scale industries are only marginally profitable, so waste treatment investment may threaten their viability. This problem can be solved by applying cleaner production strategy. This research studies the potentials of cleaner production application and formulating alternatives of cleaner production strategy in order to develop centralized small scale tapioca industry in Ciluar. The cleaner production alternatives which are potential to be applied are good housekeeping, usage of “gobegan”extractor, washing of sedimentation  tank daily, water controling, and worker supervision. The investment of these alternatives is Rp 10.052.000 and pay back period (PBP) one year seven manths. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) analysis shows that technology is the most important factor to maximize crude tapioca production efficiency by applying cleaner production. The priority of cleaner production program from AHP analysis is socialization and training of cleaner production application, integrated waste management, and socialization and training of crude tapioca quality increasing procedures. Keywords : cleaner production, small scale industry, tapioca, AH

Technology transfer and performance of improved vertisol management technology in Karnataka State

Vertisol is one of the ten orders in the soil taxonomy. The formative element "Vert" is derived from the Latin word "Verto" meaning turn or invert. Inversion takes place in the soil because of tracking that is the characteristic of Vertisols..

Neural responses to syllable-induced P1m and social impairment in children with autism spectrum disorder and typically developing Peers

    Get PDF
In previous magnetoencephalography (MEG) studies, children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been shown to respond differently to speech stimuli than typically developing (TD) children. Quantitative evaluation of this difference in responsiveness may support early diagnosis and intervention for ASD. The objective of this research is to investigate the relationship between syllable-induced P1m and social impairment in children with ASD and TD children. We analyzed 49 children with ASD aged 40–92 months and age-matched 26 TD children. We evaluated their social impairment by means of the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) and their intelligence ability using the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC). Multiple regression analysis with SRS score as the dependent variable and syllable-induced P1m latency or intensity and intelligence ability as explanatory variables revealed that SRS score was associated with syllable-induced P1m latency in the left hemisphere only in the TD group and not in the ASD group. A second finding was that increased leftward-lateralization of intensity was correlated with higher SRS scores only in the ASD group. These results provide valuable insights but also highlight the intricate nature of neural mechanisms and their relationship with autistic traits

Prenatal and Lactational Exposure to Bisphenol A in Mice Alters Expression of Genes Involved in Cortical Barrel Development without Morphological Changes

It has been reported that premature infants in neonatal intensive care units are exposed to a high rate of bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disrupting chemical. Our previous studies demonstrated that corticothalamic projection was disrupted by prenatal exposure to BPA, which persisted even in adult mice. We therefore analyzed whether prenatal and lactational exposure to low doses of BPA affected the formation of the cortical barrel, the barreloid of the thalamus, and the barrelette of the brainstem in terms of the histology and the expression of genes involved in the barrel development. Pregnant mice were injected subcutaneously with 20 µg/kg of BPA daily from embryonic day 0 (E0) to postnatal 3 weeks (P3W), while the control mice received a vehicle alone. The barrel, barreloid and barrelette of the adult mice were examined by cytochrome C oxidase (COX) staining. There were no significant differences in the total and septal areas and the patterning of the posterior medial barrel subfield (PMBSF), barreloid and barrelette, between the BPA-exposure and control groups in the adult mice. The developmental study at postnatal day 1 (PD1), PD4 and PD8 revealed that the cortical barrel vaguely appeared at PD4 and completely formed at PD8 in both groups. The expression pattern of some genes was spatiotemporally altered depending on the sex and the treatment. These results suggest that the trigeminal projection and the thalamic relay to the cortical barrel were spared after prenatal and lactational exposure to low doses of BPA, although prenatal exposure to BPA was previously shown to disrupt the corticothalamic projection

Structure and expression of two highly related genes encoding SCM-1/human lymphotactin

    Get PDF
AbstractSCM-1/lymphotactin is a chemokine-like molecule produced selectively, if not exclusively, by activated CD8+ T cells. Here we report that there are two highly homologous SCM-1 genes, which we designate as SCM-1α and SCM-1β. Both genes have three exons and two introns. The 1st intron of SCM-1α contains a pseudogene of the ribosomal large subunit L7a. In SCM-1β, a 1.5-kb region including about a quarter of the L7a pseudogene is deleted from the 1st intron. Otherwise, the two genes are highly homologous including the 5′ and 3′ flanking regions. Both genes were mapped to human chromosome 1q23. The two genes were similarly induced in peripheral blood mononuclear cells by mitogenic stimulation. Primer extension and RNase protection revealed several transcription initiation sites. The biological activities of SCM-1α and SCM-1β, which have two amino acid differences at positions 7 and 8 in the mature proteins, remain to be compared

First-Person Perspective Effects on Theory of Mind without Self-Reference

This study examined dissociations between brain networks involved in theory of mind, which is needed for guessing others' mental states, and the self, which might constitute the basis for theory of mind's development. We used event-related fMRI to compare a condition that required participants to guess the mental state of a subject featured in first-person perspective sentences (1stPP condition) with a third-person perspective sentence condition (3rdPP condition). The caudate nucleus was marginally more activated in the 1stPP than in the 3rdPP condition, while the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) was significantly more activated in the 3rdPP condition as compared to the 1stPP condition. Furthermore, we examined the correlation between activation (signal intensity) of the caudate nucleus and left DLPFC with that of the right DLPFC, which is thought to be closely connected with sense of self. We found a significant correlation between caudate nucleus and right DLPFC activation in the 1stPP condition, and between left and right DLPFC activation in the 3rdPP condition. Although theory of mind and the self both appear to recruit the right DLPFC, this region seems to be accessed through the left DLPFC during theory of mind tasks, but through the caudate nucleus when tasks require self reference
