    Functional traits and environment jointly determine the spatial scaling of population stability in North American birds

    Understanding the spatial scaling of population stability is critical for informing conservation strategies. A recently proposed metric for quantifying how population stability varies across scales is the invariability-area relationship (IAR), but the underlying drivers shaping IARs remain unclear. Using 15-year records of 249 bird species in 1035 survey transects in North America, we derived the IAR for each species by calculating population temporal invariability at different spatial scales (i.e., number of routes) and investigated how species IARs were influenced by functional traits and environmental factors. We found that species with faster life history traits and reduced flight efficiency had higher IAR intercepts (i.e., locally more stable), whereas migratory species exhibited higher IAR slopes (i.e., a faster gain of stability with increasing spatial scale). In addition, spatial correlation in temperature and vegetation structure synchronized bird population dynamics over space and thus decreased IAR slopes. By demonstrating the joint influence of functional traits and environmental factors on bird population stability across scales, our results highlight the need for dynamic conservation strategies tailored to particular types of species in an era of global environmental changes.Peer reviewe

    The Prognostic Value of Left Ventricular Entropy From T1 Mapping in Patients With Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

    Background: The prognostic value of left ventricular (LV) entropy in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is unclear.Objectives: This study aimed to assess the prognostic value of LV entropy from T1 mapping in HCM.Methods: A total of 748 participants with HCM, who underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR), were consecutively enrolled. LV entropy was quantified by native T1 mapping. A competing risk analysis and a Cox proportional hazards regression analysis were performed to identify potential associations of LV entropy with sudden cardiac death (SCD) and cardiovascular death (CVD), respectively.Results: A total of 40 patients with HCM experienced SCD, and 65 experienced CVD during a median follow-up of 43 months. Participants with increased LV entropy ( β‰₯4.06 ) were more likely to experience SCD and CVD (all P &lt; 0.05) in the entire study cohort or the subgroup with low late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) extent ( &lt;15% ). After adjustment for the European Society of Cardiology predictors and the presence of high LGE extent ( β‰₯15% ), LV mean entropy was an independent predictor for SCD (HR: 1.03; all P &lt; 0.05) by the multivariable competing risk analysis and CVD (HR: 1.06; 95% CI: 1.03-1.09; P &lt; 0.001) by multivariable Cox regression analysis.Conclusions: LV mean entropy derived from native T1 mapping, reflecting myocardial tissue heterogeneity, was an independent predictor of SCD and CVD in participants with HCM.     Long non-coding RNA ATB promotes malignancy of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma by regulating miR-200b/Kindlin-2 axis

    Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death, especially in China. In addition, the prognosis of late stage patients is extremely poor. However, the biological significance of the long non-coding RNA lnc-ATB and its potential role in ESCC remain to be documented. In this study, we investigated the role of lnc-ATB and the underlying mechanism promoting its oncogenic activity in ESCC. Expression of lnc-ATB was higher in ESCC tissues and cell lines than that in normal counterparts. Upregulated lnc-ATB served as an independent prognosis predictor of ESCC patients. Moreover, loss-of-function assays in ESCC cells showed that knockdown of lnc-ATB inhibited cell proliferation and migration both in vitroand in vivo. Mechanistic investigation indicated that lnc-ATB exerted oncogenic activities via regulating Kindlin-2, as the anti-migration role of lnc-ATB silence was attenuated by ectopic expression of Kindlin-2. Further analysis showed that lnc-ATB functions as a molecular sponge for miR-200b and Kindlin-2. Dysregulated miR-200b/Kindlin-2 signaling mediated the oncogenic activity of lnc-ATB in ESCC. Our results suggest that lnc-ATB predicts poor prognosis and may serve as a potential therapeutic target for ESCC patients

    Serum metabolomics analysis in patients with alcohol dependence

    ObjectiveAlcohol dependence (AD) is a chronic recurrent mental disease caused by long-term drinking. It is one of the most prevalent public health problems. However, AD diagnosis lacks objective biomarkers. This study was aimed to shed some light on potential biomarkers of AD patients by investigating the serum metabolomics profiles of AD patients and the controls.MethodsLiquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC–MS) was used to detect the serum metabolites of 29 AD patients (AD) and 28 controls. Six samples were set aside as the validation set (Control: n = 3; AD group: n = 3), and the remaining were used as the training set (Control: n = 26; AD group: n = 25). Principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PCA-DA) were performed to analyze the training set samples. The metabolic pathways were analyzed using the MetPA database. The signal pathways with pathway impact &gt;0.2, value of p &lt;0.05, and FDR &lt; 0.05 were selected. From the screened pathways, the metabolites whose levels changed by at least 3-fold were screened. The metabolites with no numerical overlap in their concentrations in the AD and the control groups were screened out and verified with the validation set.ResultsThe serum metabolomic profiles of the control and the AD groups were significantly different. We identified six significantly altered metabolic signal pathways, including protein digestion and absorption; alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism; arginine biosynthesis; linoleic acid metabolism; butanoate metabolism; and GABAergic synapse. In these six signal pathways, the levels of 28 metabolites were found to be significantly altered. Of these, the alterations of 11 metabolites changed by at least 3-fold compared to the control group. Of these 11 metabolites, those with no numerical overlap in their concentrations between the AD and the control groups were GABA, 4-hydroxybutanoic acid, L-glutamic acid, citric acid and L-glutamine.ConclusionThe metabolite profile of the AD group was significantly different from that of the control group. GABA, 4-hydroxybutanoic acid, L-glutamic acid, citric acid, and L-glutamine could be used as potential diagnostic markers for AD

    Pre-Treatment with Melatonin Enhances Therapeutic Efficacy of Cardiac Progenitor Cells for Myocardial Infarction

    Background/Aims: Melatonin possesses many biological activities such as antioxidant and anti-aging. Cardiac progenitor cells (CPCs) have emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy for myocardial infarction (MI). However, the low survival of transplanted CPCs in infarcted myocardium limits the successful use in treating MI. In the present study, we aimed to investigate if melatonin protects against oxidative stress-induced CPCs damage and enhances its therapeutic efficacy for MI. Methods: TUNEL assay and EdU assay were used to detect the effects of melatonin and miR-98 on H2O2-induced apoptosis and proliferation. MI model was used to evaluate the potential cardioprotective effects of melatonin and miR-98. Results: Melatonin attenuated H2O2-induced the proliferation reduction and apoptosis of c-kit+ CPCs in vitro, and CPCs which pretreated with melatonin significantly improved the functions of post-infarct hearts compared with CPCs alone in vivo. Melatonin was capable to inhibit the increase of miR-98 level by H2O2 in CPCs. The proliferation reduction and apoptosis of CPCs induced by H2O2 was aggravated by miR-98. In vivo, transplantation of CPCs with miR-98 silencing caused the more significant improvement of cardiac functions in MI than CPCs. MiR-98 targets at the signal transducer and activator of the transcription 3 (STAT3), and thus aggravated H2O2-induced the reduction of Bcl-2 protein. Conclusions: Pre-treatment with melatonin protects c-kit+ CPCs against oxidative stress-induced damage via downregulation of miR-98 and thereby increasing STAT3, representing a potentially new strategy to improve CPC-based therapy for MI

    Disparities and risks of sexually transmissible infections among men who have sex with men in China: a meta-analysis and data synthesis.

    BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including Hepatitis B and C virus, are emerging public health risks in China, especially among men who have sex with men (MSM). This study aims to assess the magnitude and risks of STIs among Chinese MSM. METHODS: Chinese and English peer-reviewed articles were searched in five electronic databases from January 2000 to February 2013. Pooled prevalence estimates for each STI infection were calculated using meta-analysis. Infection risks of STIs in MSM, HIV-positive MSM and male sex workers (MSW) were obtained. This review followed the PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO. RESULTS: Eighty-eight articles (11 in English and 77 in Chinese) investigating 35,203 MSM in 28 provinces were included in this review. The prevalence levels of STIs among MSM were 6.3% (95% CI: 3.5-11.0%) for chlamydia, 1.5% (0.7-2.9%) for genital wart, 1.9% (1.3-2.7%) for gonorrhoea, 8.9% (7.8-10.2%) for hepatitis B (HBV), 1.2% (1.0-1.6%) for hepatitis C (HCV), 66.3% (57.4-74.1%) for human papillomavirus (HPV), 10.6% (6.2-17.6%) for herpes simplex virus (HSV-2) and 4.3% (3.2-5.8%) for Ureaplasma urealyticum. HIV-positive MSM have consistently higher odds of all these infections than the broader MSM population. As a subgroup of MSM, MSW were 2.5 (1.4-4.7), 5.7 (2.7-12.3), and 2.2 (1.4-3.7) times more likely to be infected with chlamydia, gonorrhoea and HCV than the broader MSM population, respectively. CONCLUSION: Prevalence levels of STIs among MSW were significantly higher than the broader MSM population. Co-infection of HIV and STIs were prevalent among Chinese MSM. Integration of HIV and STIs healthcare and surveillance systems is essential in providing effective HIV/STIs preventive measures and treatments. TRIAL REGISTRATION: PROSPERO NO: CRD42013003721
