    Critical current and topology of the supercooled vortex state in NbSe2

    We study the behavior of the critical current, Ic(H,T), of pure and Fe doped NbSe2 crystals in the denominated disordered vortex region, limited by the critical field Hc2(T) and the field Hp(T) at which the peak effect in Ic(H,T) is detected. The critical current follows an individual pinning response as demonstrated by its field independent universal function of the superfluid density. Transport measurements combined with Bitter decorations show no evidence of the existence of an amorphous phase in the high temperature region.Comment: 7 pages, figures included. Submitted to Phys.     Emergency Department Utilization: A Qualitative Analysis of Illinois Medical Home Network Patients.

    Background Inappropriate emergency department (ED) use continues to plague healthcare in terms of disease management and costs. In 2012, the State of Illinois implemented Medical Home Network (MHN) where Medicaid recipients were assigned to primary care providers to, in part, reduce overreliance on EDs. However, MHN patients have continued to use EDs. Objective The purpose of this study is to provide a qualitative analysis of Medicaid patient-identified barriers to primary care, facilitators of emergency use, and related mental health and psychosocial factors. Methods Patients who presented themselves at the ED located at an urban, academic medical center participated in one-time, individual interviews. Participants arrived with non-urgent, minor, or moderate acuity. Interviews were digitally audiorecorded and transcribed for data analysis. Researchers analyzed data using the Grounded Theory approach. Results Four themes were identified: 1) barriers related to visiting a primary care provider (not having an appointment and scheduling issues), 2) elements of ED use (the experience of physical pain), 3) mental health and stress (a lack of willingness to discuss mental health issues), and 4) varying perceptions of primary care and the ED (the ED provides care that is fast, solution-oriented, team-based, and patient-centered within an environment containing necessary equipment). Conclusions Findings may inform interventions such as the use of community health workers as liaisons between MHN, the ED, primary care, and patients. Addressing patient perceptions regarding the role of primary care and stigma surrounding mental health can lead to decreasing ED use and increasing continuous primary care use for vulnerable patients

    Online eye tracking and real-time sentence processing: On opportunities and efficacy for capturing psycholinguistic effects of different magnitudes and diversity

    Online research methods have the potential to facilitate equitable accessibility to otherwise-expensive research resources, as well as to more diverse populations and language combinations than currently populate our studies. In psycholinguistics specifcally, webcam-based eye tracking is emerging as a powerful online tool capable of capturing sentence processing efects in real time. The present paper asks whether webcam-based eye tracking provides the necessary granularity to replicate efects—crucially both large and small—that tracker-based eye tracking has shown. Using the Gorilla Experiment Builder platform, this study set out to replicate two psycholinguistic efects: a robust one, the verb semantic constraint efect, frst reported in Altmann and Kamide, Cognition 73(3), 247–264 (1999), and a smaller one, the lexical interference efect, frst examined by Kukona et al. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 40(2), 326 (2014). Webcam-based eye tracking was able to replicate both efects, thus showing that its functionality is not limited to large efects. Moreover, the paper also reports two approaches to computing statistical power and discusses the diferences in their outputs. Beyond discussing several important methodological, theoretical, and practical implications, we ofer some further technical details and advice on how to implement webcam-based eye-tracking studies. We believe that the advent of webcam-based eye tracking, at least in respect of the visual world paradigm, will kickstart a new wave of more diverse studies with more diverse populations

    Sustained exocytosis after action potential-like stimulation at low frequencies in mouse chromaffin cells depends on a dynamin-dependent fast endocytotic process

    Under basal conditions the action potential firing rate of adrenal chromaffin cells is lower than 0.5 Hz. The maintenance of the secretory response at such frequencies requires a continuous replenishment of releasable vesicles. However, the mechanism that allows such vesicle replenishment remains unclear. Here, using membrane capacitance measurements on mouse chromaffin cells, we studied the mechanism of replenishment of a group of vesicles released by a single action potential-like stimulus (APls). The exocytosis triggered by APls (ETAP) represents a fraction (40%) of the immediately releasable pool, a group of vesicles highly coupled to voltage dependent calcium channels. ETAP was replenished with a time constant of 0.73 � 0.11 s, fast enough to maintain synchronous exocytosis at 0.2-0.5 Hz stimulation. Regarding the mechanism involved in rapid ETAP replenishment, we found that it depends on the ready releasable pool; indeed depletion of this vesicle pool significantly delays ETAP replenishment. On the other hand, ETAP replenishment also correlates with a dynamin-dependent fast endocytosis process (τ = 0.53 � 0.01 s). In this regard, disruption of dynamin function markedly inhibits the fast endocytosis and delays ETAP replenishment, but also significantly decreases the synchronous exocytosis during repetitive APls stimulation at low frequencies (0.2 and 0.5 Hz). Considering these findings, we propose a model in where both the transfer of vesicles from ready releasable pool and fast endocytosis allow rapid ETAP replenishment during low stimulation frequencies.Fil: Moya Diaz, José Abelino.     Light effects on seed germination of two spontaneous populations of Pappophorum vaginatum

    Our objectives were to determine the effects of light on seed germination of 2 populations (P1, P2) of Pappophorum vaginatum, and compare the germination responses between these populations. Because of this, two studies were conducted. The first study evaluated the effects of 2 light conditions (L0=darkness, and L1=14 h light) on the cumulative germination (%) after 4, 8, 15 and 19 days from imbibition. The second study was conducted only under L1 conditions, and it evaluated the (a) cumulative germination, (b) germination speed index, (c) time to 50% of cumulative germination (T50), (d) percentage of empty spikelets (i.e., without cariopsis), and percentage spikelets with imbibed, but not germinated cariopsis after 19 days from imbibition of seeds. Pappophorum vaginatum was the dominant species in both study communities, but total, live plant cover was 37.5% in community 1, and 62.5% in community 2. Both populations were sensitive to light. After 19 days from imbibition there was a significant, positive effect of light on cumulative germination. In the second study, cumulative germination and germination speed index were greater (p≤0.01) in P1 than in P2. At the same time, T50 and the percentage of spikelets with imbibed, but not germinated cariopsis, were greater (p≤0.01) in P2 than in P1; no differences were found in the percentage of empty spikelets. Our results demonstrated that light was important for seed germination in P. vaginatum, and that the timing for initiating germination as a response to light differed between the two study P. vaginatum populations.Nuestros objetivos fueron determinar el efecto de la luz en la germinación de dos poblaciones (P1, P2) de Pappophorum vaginatum, y comparar las respuestas de la germinación entre estas poblaciones. Se condujeron dos estudios. El primer estudio evaluó los efectos de dos condiciones de luz (L0=oscuridad, y L1=14 h de luz) en la germinación acumulada (%) después de 4, 8, 15 y 19 días desde la imbibición. El segundo estudio solo se condujo bajo las condiciones L1, y se evaluaron (a) la germinación acumulada, (b) el índice de velocidad de germinación, (c) el tiempo al 50% de germinación acumulada (T50), (d) el porcentaje de espiguillas vacías (sin cariopse), y el porcentaje de espiguillas con cariopses embebidos, pero no germinados. Pappophorum vaginatum fue la especie dominante en ambas comunidades estudiadas, pero la cobertura vegetal viva, total, fue 37.5% en la comunidad 1 y 62.5% en la comunidad 2. Ambas poblaciones fueron sensibles a la luz. Después de 19 días desde la imbibición, hubo un efecto positivo, significativo de la luz sobre la germinación acumulada. En el segundo estudio, realizado solo bajo las condiciones de luz indicadas para el primer estudio, la germinación acumulada y el índice de la velocidad de germinación fueron mayores (p≤0.01) en P1 que en P2. Al mismo tiempo, T50 y el porcentaje de espiguillas con cariopses embebidos, pero no germinados, fueron mayores (p≤0.01) en P2 que en P1; no se hallaron diferencias en el porcentaje de espiguillas vacías. Nuestros resultados demostraron que la luz fue importante para la germinación de las semillas en P. vaginatum, y que el momento de la iniciación de la germinación en respuesta a la luz difirió entre las poblaciones de P. vaginatum estudiadas.La fecha de publicación es correcta aunque la impresión de la revista se realizó en agosto 2017.     First order phase transition from the vortex liquid to an amorphous solid

    We present a systematic study of the topology of the vortex solid phase in superconducting Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CaCu2_{2}O8_{8} samples with low doses of columnar defects. A new state of vortex matter imposed by the presence of geometrical contours associated with the random distribution of columns is found. The results show that the first order liquid-solid transition in this vortex matter does not require a structural symmetry change.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Fashion is predictable, its behavior is based on certain patterns that are repeated, it generates models and triggers actions that are also contemplated in said patterns; It goes through stages that, from before its emergence and until its decline, are already corresponding to a life cycle. In each season the cycle repeats itself, and like a true ouroboro, fashion proposes an eternal return, a rebirth twice a year, two seasons that move a great industry; multiple products are offered to the market that are quickly consumed, waiting for new launches to repeat the cyclical pattern. Just as the ouroboro symbolizes the present moment that is devoured by the future to start over, the cyclical nature of fashion proposes instants, which culminate and start over at each moment. Fashion on a large scale, progresses in spirals through time, renews interest in itself, proposes fantasy, luxury, beauty and at the same time generates pollution, an alarming consumption of water, and carbon emissions; sufficient reasons to orient its cyclical nature towards a circular ethic in pursuit of a sustainable future.La moda es previsible, su conducta está basada en ciertos patrones que se repiten, genera modelos y desencadena acciones que están también contemplados en dichos patrones; atraviesa etapas que, desde antes de su surgimiento y hasta su declinación están previstas ya que corresponden a un ciclo de vida.     Se propone un recorrido que comienza con la obtención de las materias primas, pero que no finaliza en el producto terminado, sino que se diversifica en muchas otras rutas vinculadas, cada una de ellas orientadas a distribuir, mostrar, promocionar, publicitar; es decir, permitir la llegada a cada uno de los posibles consumidores, ofreciéndoles mucho más que el producto en sí. Desde sus orígenes, la moda propone y produce conductas y cambios en las sociedades, en muchos casos, dichos cambios, han logrado mantenerse de forma permanente, aunque la moda que los impulsó desapareciera. De todos modos, se puede afirmar que la moda, como fenómeno social efímero, no desaparece completamente, sino que produce una huella permanente; un rastro que se puede recorrer, un rastro que funciona como testigo y permite identificar patrones, para evaluar y proponer acciones con el fin de minimizar y desacelerar el impacto de la producción de artículos de moda a gran escala, crear nuevos hábitos y sostenerlos en el tiempo.A route is proposed that begins with obtaining raw materials, but does not end in the finished product, but rather diversifies into many other linked routes, each one aimed at distributing, showing, promoting, advertising; that is to say, to allow the arrival to each one of the possible consumers, offering them much more than the product itself.
