    Explicit memory schemes for evolutionary algorithms in dynamic environments

    Copyright @ 2007 Springer-VerlagProblem optimization in dynamic environments has atrracted a growing interest from the evolutionary computation community in reccent years due to its importance in real world optimization problems. Several approaches have been developed to enhance the performance of evolutionary algorithms for dynamic optimization problems, of which the memory scheme is a major one. This chapter investigates the application of explicit memory schemes for evolutionary algorithms in dynamic environments. Two kinds of explicit memory schemes: direct memory and associative memory, are studied within two classes of evolutionary algorithms: genetic algorithms and univariate marginal distribution algorithms for dynamic optimization problems. Based on a series of systematically constructed dynamic test environments, experiments are carried out to investigate these explicit memory schemes and the performance of direct and associative memory schemes are campared and analysed. The experimental results show the efficiency of the memory schemes for evolutionary algorithms in dynamic environments, especially when the environment changes cyclically. The experimental results also indicate that the effect of the memory schemes depends not only on the dynamic problems and dynamic environments but also on the evolutionary algorithm used

    Tackling Challenges in Seebeck Coefficient Measurement of Ultra-High Resistance Samples with an AC Technique

    Seebeck coefficient is a widely studied semiconductor property. Conventional Seebeck coefficient measurements are based on DC voltage measurement. Normally this is performed on samples with moderate resistances (e.g., below a few MĪ© level). Certain semiconductors are intrinsic and highly resistive. Many examples can be found in optical and photovoltaic materials. The hybrid halide perovskites that have gained extensive attention recently are a good example. Despite great attention from the materials and physics communities, few successful studies exist of the Seebeck coefficient of these compounds, for example CH3NH3PbI3. An AC-technique-based Seebeck coefficient measurement is reported, which makes high-quality Seebeck voltage measurements on samples with resistances up to the 100 GĪ© level. This is achieved through a specifically designed setup to enhance sample isolation and increase capacitive impedance. As a demonstration, Seebeck coefficient measurement of a CH3NH3PbI3 thin film is performed at dark, with sample resistance 150 GĪ©, and found S = +550 ĀµV Kāˆ’1. The strategy reported could be applied to the studies of fundamental transport parameters of all intrinsic semiconductors that have not been feasible

    An Investigation of Intention to Explore Business Intelligence Systems: A Psychological Engagement Perspective

    Prior research has generally found that firm-specific information technology (IT) knowledge, behavioral, normative and control beliefs, and team empowerment contributed to intention to explore IT. However, little attention is directed towards how the user experience, specifically user engagement, influences usersā€™ intention to explore IT, such as business information systems (BIS). Toward this end, this paper explores how user engagement affects usersā€™ intention to explore BIS and how user engagement is promoted by the cognitive fit between BIS interface and tasks and the regulatory compatibility between BIS interface and personal characteristics, such as style of information processing. We conducted a lab experiment to empirically test the hypotheses. This study may contribute to the extant information systems (IS) literature by uncovering the impacts of engagement experience on intention to explore and responding to the call for investigation of the BIS context where rich visualizations of the systems influence usersā€™ interactive experience

    Inhibitory Effect of Polysaccharides from Scutellaria barbata D. Don on Invasion and Metastasis of 95-D Cells Lines via Regulation of C-MET and E-CAD Expressions

    Purpose: To investigate the inhibitory effect of polysaccharides from Scutellaria barbata (PSB) on invasion and metastasis of lung cancer, and study the possible mechanism.Methods: PSB was extracted with water and by alcohol precipitation, and purified by DEAE-52 column chromatography. A highly invasive and metastatic lung carcinoma cell, 95-D cell line, was used for the study. Cell adhesion and invasion assays in vitro were performed to evaluate the anti-invasive and antimetastatic effects of PSB (50 - 200 Ī¼g/ml) on 95-D cell. Immunocytochemical staining and Western blot techniques were employed to study the regulatory effects of PSB on the expression of C-MET and ECAD.Results: The results indicate that PSB significantly inhibited cell invasion and migration of 95-D in a concentration-dependent manner (p < 0.05). The adhesion of 95-D cells to fibronectin was also inhibited by PSB (p < 0.05). The expression of C-MET and E-CAD in 95-D cells treated with PSB were significantly down-regulated and up-regulated, respectivelt (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Treatment with PSB can significantly inhibit the invasion and metastasis of 95-D cells in vitro, probably through the regulation of C-MET and E-CAD.Keywords: Polysaccharide, Scutellaria barbata, 95-D cell lines, Invasion, Metastasi

    Dimerization-Induced Fermi-Surface Reconstruction in IrTe2

    We report a de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation study on IrTe2 single crystals showing complex dimer formations. By comparing the angle dependence of dHvA oscillations with band structure calculations, we show distinct Fermi surface reconstruction induced by a 1/5-type and a 1/8-type dimerizations. This verifies that an intriguing quasi-two-dimensional conducting plane across the layers is induced by dimerization in both cases. A phase transition to the 1/8 phase with higher dimer density reveals that local instabilities associated with intra-and interdimer couplings are the main driving force for complex dimer formations in IrTe2.X11149sciescopu
