    An Investigation on the Students’ Opinions of Bilingual Teaching in Universities of Western China

    In the western areas of China, bilingual teaching is in the beginning phrase, and hasn’t reached the desirable outcomes. In order to know the development phase of bilingual teaching in less-developed areas of China, this paper chose students and teachers from two universities which respectively located in two provinces of the western areas of China and have different teaching levels as representative examples, and issued total of 352 valid questionnaires to reflect the bilingual teaching comprehensively. The research finds that learners have pessimistic attitude toward bilingual teaching and don’t realize that the great importance of bilingual teaching in terms of personal development in the long run. The efficiency of bilingual teaching is affected by multitude of factors, including students’ attitudes and learning methods, learning situation in and after class, teacher’s levels, assessment methods and students’ understanding levels. The thesis also investigates the evaluation systems of bilingual teaching and finds that students prefer the combination of oral and written exam

    Analysis of the Quality on English Microlectures of Senior High School from Perspectives of Teaching Philosophy, Second Language Acquisition Mechanism and Education Psychology

    Concerning the fact that a large amount of teachers have been participated in the microlectures competition, it means the concept of microlectures has been recognized. However, English teachers are devoted to participating in these competitions but fail to put microlectures into practical teaching. Therefore, the focus of this paper is going to answer the following two questions, that is, how to make a good microlecture and how to use it properly. This paper chooses four videos from The Third China’s Microlectures Competition to analysis from three aspects: teaching philosophy, second language acquisition mechanism and education psychology. It is found that English teachers from senior high school generally do not understand the concept of microlectures. Generally speaking, teachers are intended to win the award of the competition but fail to put microlectures in the practical teaching. Teachers are inclined to select big topics, untypical teaching materials. What’s more, the structure of microlectures isn’t complete since some teachers ignore the exercise part. Based on these problems, on the one hand, English teachers should insist on life-long study and apply the latest education technologies into practical teaching. On the other hand, the organization of the whole microlecture should be developed logically. Suggestions are provided with teachers on how to make a make a good microlecture and how to use it properly

    Does Public Servants’ Low Trust in Citizen Raters Really Matter? Evidence from Mainland China

    This article examines the trust that public servants have in Chinese citizens using a typical public service rating and ranking system: the Assessment and Discussion of Professional Ethos (ADPE). We pose questions on whether public servants expressed concerns about trusting citizens as raters, whether the seemingly low interest of citizens in rating means that their ratings are reliable, what the relationship was between low trust and the citizens, whether the ADPE was an incentive, and public service responsiveness after the ADPE had been completed. These questions are assessed by (1) a content analysis of official and scholastic ADPE articles, (2) a survey of municipal officials in Yuncheng City where an ADPE operated for several years and (3) the opinions of interviewees. The content analysis reveals that public servants seemed to trust citizens, but the survey data reveals that the opposite might be true. Nevertheless, low trust in citizens did not affect either public service responsiveness or incentivization. Using a gaming perspective, we argue that the ADPE might be an ineffective institutional arrangement. We suggest methods for eliminating public servants lack of trust that include enhancing the value of trust shown in citizens, making trust matter, developing techniques to select citizens experienced in using public services for rankings, and enhancing the transparency of the rating information

    Measuring cosmogenic Li9 background in a reactor neutrino experiment

    Cosmogenic isotopes 9Li and 8He produced in the detector are the most problematic background in the reactor neutrino experiments designed to determine precisely the neutrino mixing angle theta13. The average time interval of cosmic-ray muons in the detector is often on the order of the lifetimes of the 9Li and 8He isotopes. We have developed a method for determining this kind of background from the distribution of time since last muon for muon rate up to about 20 Hz when the background-to-signal ratio is small, on the order of a few percents.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures.     Accelerated quantum adiabatic transfer in superconducting qubits

    Quantum adiabatic transfer is widely used in quantum computation and quantum simulation. However, the transfer speed is limited by the quantum adiabatic approximation condition, which hinders its application in quantum systems with a short decoherence time. Here we demonstrate quantum adiabatic state transfers that jump along geodesics in one-qubit and two-qubit superconducting transmons. This approach possesses the advantages of speed, robustness, and high fidelity compared with the usual adiabatic process. Our protocol provides feasible strategies for improving state manipulation and gate operation in superconducting quantum circuits

    Horizontal Pyramid Matching for Person Re-identification

    Despite the remarkable recent progress, person re-identification (Re-ID) approaches are still suffering from the failure cases where the discriminative body parts are missing. To mitigate such cases, we propose a simple yet effective Horizontal Pyramid Matching (HPM) approach to fully exploit various partial information of a given person, so that correct person candidates can be still identified even even some key parts are missing. Within the HPM, we make the following contributions to produce a more robust feature representation for the Re-ID task: 1) we learn to classify using partial feature representations at different horizontal pyramid scales, which successfully enhance the discriminative capabilities of various person parts; 2) we exploit average and max pooling strategies to account for person-specific discriminative information in a global-local manner. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed HPM, extensive experiments are conducted on three popular benchmarks, including Market-1501, DukeMTMC-ReID and CUHK03. In particular, we achieve mAP scores of 83.1%, 74.5% and 59.7% on these benchmarks, which are the new state-of-the-arts. Our code is available on GithubComment: Accepted by AAAI 201

    Associations between gut microbiota and adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study

    Gut microbiota are associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants; however, the precise causal relationship remains unclear. In this study, we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to comprehensively study the relationship between gut microbiota and adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants and identify specific causal bacteria that may be associated with the occurrence and development of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants. The genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) of the MiBioGen biogroup was used as the exposure data. The GWAS of six common adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in premature infants from the FinnGen consortium R9 was used as the outcome data. Genetic variations, namely, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) below the locus-wide significance level (1 × 10−5) and genome-wide statistical significance threshold (5 × 10−8) were selected as instrumental variables (IVs). MR studies use inverse variance weighting (IVW) as the main method. To supplement this, we also applied three additional MR methods: MR-Egger, weighted median, and weighted mode. In addition, the Cochrane’s Q test, MR-Egger intercept test, Mendelian randomization pleiotropy residual sum and outlier (MR-PRESSO), and leave-one-out methods were used for sensitivity analysis. Our study shows a causal relationship between specific gut microbiota and neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants. These findings provide new insights into the mechanism by which gut microbiota may mediate adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants
