AbstractHangjinhouqi is one of the most serious endemic arsenic and fluorosis areas in Hetao Plain, China. Groundwater samples (n=97) and two sediment cores issued from boreholes were collected to characterize the hydrogeochemistry of groundwater and sediment lithology of aquifers. Results showed that arsenic and fluoride content in groundwater range from 1 to 1093μg/L and from 0.30 to 6.01mg/L, respectively. The highest concentrations are mainly found in the flat areas of the Yin Mountains. As and F are not correlated, suggesting that their origin and/or geochemical processes leading to their release to groundwater are different. Between 15 and 45m of depth, both arsenic and fluoride are more easily released into groundwater. The external environment of high As and high F groundwater formation consisted of a lake-based geographical environment in a long term and closed geological structure, arid and semi-arid climatic conditions, as well as hydrogeological characteristics

Selecting suitable light conditions according to the plant growth characteristics is one of the important approaches to cultivating high-quality vegetable seedlings. To determine the more favorable LED light conditions for producing high-quality tomato and cucumber seedlings in plant factories with artificial light (PFALS), the growth characteristics of tomato and cucumber seedlings under seven LED light environments (CK, B, UV-A, FR, B+UV-A, UV-A+FR, and B+FR) and the development of these seedlings after transplanting into a plastic greenhouse were investigated. The results showed that the seedling height and hypocotyl length increased in treatments with far-red light supplementation (FR, UV-A+FR, and B+FR), but decreased in the B treatment, in both varieties. The seedling index of tomato seedlings increased in the B+UV-A treatment, while that of cucumber seedlings increased in the FR treatment. After transplanting into a plastic greenhouse, tomato plants that radiated with UV-A had greater flower numbers on the 15th day after transplanting. In cucumber plants of the FR treatment, the flowering time was significantly delayed, and the female flower exhibited at a lower node position. By using a comprehensive scoring analysis of all detected indicators, light environments with UV-A and FR were more beneficial for improving the overall quality of tomato and cucumber seedlings, respectively

Molecular characterization based on tumor microenvironment-related signatures for guiding immunotherapy and therapeutic resistance in lung adenocarcinoma

Background: Although the role of tumor microenvironment in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) has been explored in a number of studies, the value of TME-related signatures in immunotherapy has not been comprehensively characterized.Materials and Methods: Consensus clustering was conducted to characterize TME-based molecular subtypes using transcription data of LUAD samples. The biological pathways and immune microenvironment were assessed by CIBERSORT, ESTIMATE, and gene set enrichment analysis. A TME-related risk model was established through the algorithms of least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) and stepwise Akaike information criterion (stepAIC).Results: Four TME-based molecular subtypes including C1, C2, C3, and C4 were identified, and they showed distinct overall survival, genomic characteristics, DNA methylation pattern, immune microenvironment, and biological pathways. C1 had the worst prognosis and high tumor proliferation rate. C3 and C4 had higher enrichment of anti-tumor signatures compared to C1 and C2. C4 had evidently low enrichment of epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) signature and tumor proliferation rate. C3 was predicted to be more sensitive to immunotherapy compared with other subtypes. C1 is more sensitive to chemotherapy drugs, including Docetaxel, Vinorelbine and Cisplatin, while C3 is more sensitive to Paclitaxel. A five-gene risk model was constructed, which showed a favorable performance in three independent datasets. Low-risk group showed a longer overall survival, more infiltrated immune cells, and higher response to immunotherapy than high-risk group. Conclusion: This study comprehensively characterized the molecular features of LUAD patients based on TME-related signatures, demonstrating the potential of TME-based signatures in exploring the mechanisms of LUAD development. The TME-related risk model was of clinical value to predict LUAD prognosis and guide immunotherapy

LAC: Practical Ring-LWE Based Public-Key Encryption with Byte-Level Modulus

We propose an instantiation of public key encryption scheme based on the ring learning with error problem, where the modulus is at a byte level and the noise is at a bit level, achieving one of the most compact lattice based schemes in the literature. The main technical challenges are a) the decryption error rates increases and needs to be handled elegantly, and b) we cannot use the Number Theoretic Transform (NTT) technique to speed up the implementation. We overcome those limitations with some customized parameter sets and heavy error correction codes. We give a treatment of the concrete security of the proposed parameter set, with regards to the recent advance in lattice based cryptanalysis. We present an optimized implementation taking advantage of our byte level modulus and bit level noise. In addition, a byte level modulus allows for high parallelization and the bit level noise avoids the modulus reduction during multiplication. Our result shows that \LAC~is more compact than most of the existing (Ring-)LWE based solutions, while achieving a similar level of efficiency, compared with popular solutions in this domain, such as Kyber

Morphology-Specific Inhibition of β-Amyloid Aggregates by 17β-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Type 10

A major hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the formation of toxic aggregates of the β-amyloid peptide (Aβ). Given that Aβ peptides are known to localise within mitochondria and interact with 17β-HSD10, a mitochondrial protein expressed at high levels in AD brains, we investigated the inhibitory potential of 17β-HSD10 against Aβ aggregation under a range of physiological conditions. Fluorescence self-quenching (FSQ) of Aβ(1-42) labelled with HiLyte Fluor 555 was used to evaluate the inhibitory effect under conditions established to grow distinct Aβ morphologies. 17β-HSD10 preferentially inhibits the formation of globular and fibrillar-like structures but has no effect on the growth of amorphous plaque-like aggregates at endosomal pH 6. This work provides insights into the dependence of the Aβ-17β-HSD10 interaction with the morphology of Aβ aggregates and how this impacts enzymatic function. 17 β-HSD10 interaction with Aβ amyloid: what type of amyloid? 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 10 interacts with β-amyloid (Aβ) aggregates and suppresses Aβ-induced apoptosis in neurons, but the aggregate morphology inhibited by 17β-HSD10 remains unknown. Fluorescence self-quenching demonstrated that fibrils and globular aggregates, but not plaques, are targeted by 17β-HSD10
