    Turkey changed her economic policy in 1980s towards more liberal economy and higher exports. During this transition, the structure of the exports also changed from agricultural products towards industrial ones. Export of food products, for which the European Union is the largest market, has an important share in total exports. Recently, EU has started to increase the stringency of her regulations related to food quality, safety and environmental standards. This development necessitates the analysis of how Turkish firms exporting into EU should respond to them, and that is what this paper will try to demonstrate.     Benchmarking International Food Safety Performance in the Fresh Produce Sector

    The objective of this paper is to assess food systems performance in Mediterranean countries to deliver safe food (fresh produce), and to demonstrate the capacity to the satisfaction of private customers and public regulators. To that end, an international benchmarking exercise was developed to assess the quality performance gap in food standards across countries and food systems. The study was carried out in three Mediterranean countries: Spain, Morocco and Turkey and involved an audit of the citrus and tomatoes supply chains, and a comparison with existing "best practice" in infrastructure and management practices at both firm and industry level. The aim was to identify the gaps between fresh produce exporters and a best practice company.     Nodular melanoma presenting with rapid progression and widespread metastases: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Melanoma is responsible for 1% to 2% of all cancer deaths around the world. Nodular melanoma often carries a poor prognosis because of no prodromal radial growth phase, early distant metastasis and significant tumor volume.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We present a case of progressive melanoma. A 51-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with dyspnea and skin lesions. These were multiple, dark colored, firm, and nodular and varied in size. He was diagnosed with melanoma. Temozolomide was administered, but he died of respiratory failure within a week after diagnosis.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Nodular melanoma tends to spread rapidly and eventually metastasize to vital organs. It may be fatal within months of recognition.</p

    Cuscuta Arvensis Beyr “Dodder”: In Vivo Hepatoprotective Effects Against Acetaminophen-Induced Hepatotoxicity In Rats

    Cuscuta arvensis Beyr. is a parasitic plant, and commonly known as “dodder” in Europe, in the United States, and “tu si zi shu” in China. It is one of the preferred spices used in sweet and savory dishes. Also, it is used as a folk medicine for the treatment particularly of liver problems, knee pains, and physiological hepatitis, which occur notably in newborns and their mothers in the southeastern part of Turkey. The purpose of this study was to investigate the hepatoprotective effects and antioxidant activities of aqueous and methanolic extracts of C. arvensis Beyr. on acetaminophen (APAP)-induced acute hepatotoxicity in rats. The results were supported by subsequent histopathological studies. The hepatoprotective activity of both the aqueous and methanolic extracts at an oral dose of 125 and 250 mg/kg was investigated by observing the reduction levels or the activity of alkaline phosphatase, alkaline transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase, blood urine nitrogen, and total bilirubin content. In vivo antioxidant activity was determined by analyzing the serum superoxide dismutase, malondialdehyde, glutathione, and catalase levels. Chromatographic methods were used to isolate biologically active compounds from the extract, and spectroscopic methods were used for structure elucidation. Both the methanolic and aqueous extracts exerted noticable hepatoprotective and antioxidant effects supporting the folkloric usage of dodder. One of the bioactive compounds was kaempferol-3-O-rhamnoside, isolated and identified from the methanolic extract.PubMedWoSScopu

    Determining the best model for estimation the monthly mean daily global solar radiation on a horizontal surface - A case study in Nigde, Turkey

    WOS: 000218198200011Knowledge of the local solar radiation is important for many applications of solar energy systems. The global solar radiation on horizontal surface at the location of interest is the most critical input parameter employed in the design and prediction of the performance of solar energy systems. In this study, 3 empirical sunshine based models are compared correlating the monthly mean daily global solar radiation on a horizontal surface with monthly mean sunshine records for Nigde, Turkey. Models are compared using coefficient of determination (R-2), the root mean square error (RMSE), the mean bias error (MBE) and the t-statistic. According to our results, all the models fitted the data adequately and can be used to estimate the specific monthly global solar radiation. The t-statistic was used as the best indicator; this indicator depends on both, and is more effective for determining the model performance. The agreement between the estimated and the measured data were remarkable and the method was recommended for use in Nigde, Turkey
