Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma: three protocols combining doxorubicin, hyperfractionated radiotherapy and surgery

Patients with anaplastic thyroid carcinoma can rarely be cured, but every effort should be made to prevent death due to suffocation. Between 1984 and 1999, 55 consecutive patients with anaplastic thyroid carcinoma were prospectively treated according to a combined regimen consisting of hyperfractionated radiotherapy, doxorubicin, and when feasible surgery. Radiotherapy was carried out for 5 days a week. The daily fraction until 1988 was 1.0 Gy×2 (A) and 1989–92 1.3 Gy×2 (B) . Thereafter 1.6 Gy×2 (C) was administered. Radiotherapy was administered to a total target dose of 46 Gy; of which 30 Gy was administered preoperatively in the first two protocols (A and B), while the whole dose was given preoperatively in the third protocol (C). The therapy was otherwise identical. Twenty mg doxorubicin was administered intravenously weekly. Surgery was possible in 40 patients. No patient failed to complete the protocol due to toxicity. In only 13 cases (24%) was death attributed to local failure. Five patients (9%) ‘had a survival’ exceeding 2 years. No signs of local recurrence were seen in 33 patients (60%); 5 out of 16 patients in Protocol A, 11 out of 17 patients in Protocol B, 17 out of 22 patients in Protocol C (P=0.017). In the 40 patients undergoing additional surgery, no signs of local recurrence were seen in 5 out of 9 patients, 11 out of 14 patients and 17 out of 17 patients, respectively (P=0.005)

Academic well-being and smoking among 14-to 17-year-old schoolchildren in six European cities

It is well established that poor academic performance is related to smoking, but the association between academic well-being and smoking is less known. We measured academic well-being by school burnout and schoolwork engagement and studied their associations with smoking among 14- to 17-year-old schoolchildren in Belgium, Germany, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, and Portugal. A classroom survey (2013 SILNE survey, N = 11,015) was conducted using the Short School Burnout Inventory and the Schoolwork Engagement Inventory. Logistic regression, generalized linear mixed models, and ANOVA were used. Low schoolwork engagement and high school burnout increased the odds for daily smoking in all countries. Academic performance was correlated with school burnout and schoolwork engagement, and adjusting for it slightly decreased the odds for smoking. Adjusting for socioeconomic factors and school level had little effect. Although high school burnout and low schoolwork engagement correlate with low academic performance, they are mutually independent risk factors for smoking. (C) 2016 The Authors. Negotiating English language teacher identity—an autoethnography

Identity construction is an integral part of learning how to teach. As a former British colony, Hong Kong provides a unique educational and research context where East meets West. This study examines my identity construction as an English language teacher (ELT) in Hong Kong and the United States using an autoethnographic approach, which serves as an attempt to answer recent calls in the field of applied linguistics for more innovative and authentic research. Reflexive journals and essays written for my postgraduate courses were used to reconstruct my life stories and identify the critical events pertinent to my professional identity formation as an ELT and meaningful lived experiences as a transnational woman. To analyse the important events that contributed to the construction of my professional identity, critical event analysis was used in tandem with salient literature pertaining to teacher identity development and teacher education. Based on my lived experiences as a transnational woman educator, I provide some suggestions regarding teacher identity construction for school administrators, researchers, and teacher educators to consider when implementing ways to recruit, support, and retain English language teachers

Impact of Anthropogenic Pressures on the Flora of the Haut-Sassandra Classified Forest (Central-West of CĂŽte d'Ivoire). The classified forest of Haut-Sassandra located in the center-west of Ivory Coast is subjected to a strong anthropization since the politico-military conflicts of the year 2002. This study aims to quantify the degradation in the northern, central and southern zones of this domain. To achieve this, a spatiotemporal analysis of the dynamics of the three zones was made based on five Landsat images from 1990, 1997, 2002, 2006 and 2013. It was supplemented by a floristic inventory of each zone. The results show that forest cover conversions of the three zones occurred during the conflict period with regression rates of more than 50 %. At the floristic level, 622 plant species distributed among 410 genera and 104 families were recorded in all three zones. The North and the Center differ significantly from the South by the average specific richness. The inventoried flora generally differs from one zone to another depending on the degradation factors, with a greater diversity in cocoa plantations. However, this flora, although diversified, does not have any similarity with that of the forest relics still present in the classified forest of Haut-Sassandra

Role of hypoxia-induced upregulation of caveolin-1 in hepatocellular carcinoma cell migration and invasion

Poster Session: Cellular and Molecular Biology 30 Hypoxia: abstract no. 2049Intratumoral hypoxia occurs when cells in the inner core of solid tumor mass become deprived of oxygen. It correlates with an increased risk to develop metastasis. However, the molecular basis about the adaptation and survival of tumor cells in hypoxic environment remains obscure. Our recent data revealed that Cav1, a component of focal adhesion, is dramatically increased in metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell lines and tissues, suggesting a role of Cav1 in HCC metastasis. In this study, we further investigated the potential role of Cav1 in HCC metastasis under hypoxia. Our data revealed that Cav1 mRNA and protein expressions were enhanced in various HCC cells lines when placed in hypoxic chamber or treated with hypoxic mimetic drug. Such upregulation of Cav1 was abolished with the addition of HIF1α inhibitor or depletion of HIF1α by siRNA. This suggests that hypoxia-induced Cav1 expression is HIF1α-dependent. Our findings also showed that HCC cells possessed enhanced motility under hypoxia. However, knockdown of Cav1 in HCC cells attenuated the capacity of cells to migrate and invade. Collectively, our study suggests that the increased motility of HCC cells conferred by the hypoxia-induced Cav1 expression is an adaptive mechanism of cells to survive under hypoxic stress.link_to_OA_fulltex

1-Pentene epoxidation in titanium silicalite-1 microchannel reactor - Experiments and modelling

    No full text
ATS-1 coated, microchannel reactor was fabricated onto silicon substrate using selective seeding and regrowth. The preparation technique's ability to engineer the zeolite film microstructure and chemistry was used to prepare TS-1 coatings with different titanium-contents and crystal sizes. The zeolite microreactor was utilized for 1-pentene epoxidation to 1,2-epoxypentane with hydrogen peroxide. This exothermic reaction can benefit by good heat transfer and containment of the oxidizing agent. A computational model was employed to simulate the reaction in the microreactor using kinetic data from batch reactor experiments. The influence of reactor geometry, catalyst properties and reaction conditions was evaluated and the results compared with experimental data
