    A new room temperature molten salt (RTMS) [1-methyl-3-ethylimidazolium/AlCl3/SnCl2 (3:2:0.5)] was developed for depositing tin on a copper electrode. Different tin crystallites were deposited at different temperatures, giving widely different performances of the assembled lithium cell [Sn (Cu)/LiCl buffered MEICl-AlCl3 RTMS/lithium]. Tin film deposited at 50°C or higher gave a more desirable crystal structure and an improved performance than films obtained at lower temperatures. Both cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic cycling show the formation of three major lithium-tin alloy phases corresponding to the phase transition of LiSn/Li7Sn3, Li13Sn5/Li7Sn2, and Li7Sn2/Li22Sn5. Increases in the charging and discharging capacities were found with the deposition of higher lithium-rich tin alloys, though at the degradation of the irreversible capacity at the first cycle. The discharging capacity decreased rapidly, producing loose, expanded, and irregular crystallites upon cycling at a high current density (cd) (1.0 mA/cm2). However, an average capacity of 140 mAh/g, coulombic efficiency around 85%, and more than 200 cycles were obtained at a low cd (0.4 mA/cm2). The improvement is attributed to the deposition of small and regular tin crystallites that allows reversible insertion and removal of lithium from a more stable crystal structure without a significant volume change during cycling.published_or_final_versio

    Crack identification of functionally graded beams using continuous wavelet transform

    © 2018 Elsevier Ltd This paper proposes a new damage index for the crack identification of beams made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) by using the wavelet analysis. The damage index is defined based on the position of the wavelet coefficient modulus maxima in the scale space. The crack is assumed to be an open edge crack and is modeled by a massless rotational spring. It is assumed that the material properties follow exponential distributions along the beam thickness direction. The Timoshenko beam theory is employed to derive the governing equations which are solved analytically to obtain the frequency and mode shape of cracked FGM beams. Then, we apply the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) to the mode shapes of the cracked FGM beams. The locations of the cracks are determined from the sudden changes in the spatial variation of the damage index. An intensity factor, which relates to the size of the crack and the coefficient of the wavelet transform, is employed to estimate the crack depth. The effects of the crack size, the crack location and the Young's modulus ratio on the crack depth detection are investigated

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Of three first-line anti-tuberculosis (anti-TB) drugs, isoniazid is most commonly associated with hepatotoxicity. Differences in INH-induced toxicity have been attributed to genetic variability at several loci, NAT2, CYP2E1, GSTM1and GSTT1, that code for drug-metabolizing enzymes. This study evaluated whether the polymorphisms in these enzymes were associated with an increased risk of anti-TB drug-induced hepatitis in patients and could potentially be used to identify patients at risk of liver injury. METHODS AND DESIGN: In a cross-sectional study, 2244 tuberculosis patients were assessed two months after the start of treatment. Anti-TB drug-induced liver injury (ATLI) was defined as an ALT, AST or bilirubin value more than twice the upper limit of normal. NAT2, CYP2E1, GSTM1 and GSTT1 genotypes were determined using the PCR/ligase detection reaction assays. RESULTS: 2244 patients were evaluated, there were 89 cases of ATLI, a prevalence of 4% 9 patients (0.4%) had ALT levels more than 5 times the upper limit of normal. The prevalence of ATLI was greater among men than women, and there was a weak association with NAT2*5 genotypes, with ATLI more common among patients with the NAT2*5*CT genotype. The sensitivity of the CT genotype for identifying patients with ATLI was 42% and the positive predictive value 5.9%. CT ATLI was more common among slow acetylators (prevalence ratio 2.0 (95% CI 0.95,4.20) )compared to rapid acetylators. There was no evidence that ATLI was associated with CYP2E1 RsaIc1/c1genotype, CYP2E1 RsaIc1/c2 or c2/c2 genotypes, or GSTM1/GSTT1 null genotypes. CONCLUSIONS: In Xinjiang Uyghur TB patients, liver injury was associated with the genetic variant NAT2*5, however the genetic markers studied are unlikely to be useful for screening patients due to the low sensitivity and low positive predictive values for identifying persons at risk of liver injury

    Soil biota, antimicrobial resistance and planetary health

    The concept of planetary health acknowledges the links between ecosystems, biodiversity and human health and well-being. Soil, the critical component of the interconnected ecosystem, is the most biodiverse habitat on Earth, and soil microbiomes play a major role in human health and well-being through ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling, pollutant remediation and synthesis of bioactive compounds such as antimicrobials. Soil is also a natural source of antimicrobial resistance, which is often termed intrinsic resistance. However, increasing use and misuse of antimicrobials in humans and animals in recent decades has increased both the diversity and prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in soils, particularly in areas affected by human and animal wastes, such as organic manures and reclaimed wastewater, and also by air transmission. Antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance are two sides of the sword, while antimicrobials are essential in health care; globally, antimicrobial resistance is jeopardizing the effectiveness of antimicrobial drugs, thus threatening human health. Soil is a crucial pathway through which humans are exposed to antimicrobial resistance determinants, including those harbored by human pathogens. In this review, we use the nexus of antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance as a focus to discuss the role of soil in planetary health and illustrate the impacts of soil microbiomes on human health and well-being. This review examines the sources and dynamics of antimicrobial resistance in soils and uses the perspective of planetary health to track the movement of antimicrobial-resistance genes between environmental compartments, including soil, water, food and air

    Identification of two phosphatidylinositol/phosphatidylcholine transfer protein genes that are predominately transcribed in the flowers of Arabidopsis thaliana

    The Sec14 protein (Sec14p) and its homologs are involved in the transfer of phosphatidylinositol/phosphatidylcholine phospholipids in eukaryotic cells. In the completely sequenced genome of Arabidopsis thaliana, multiple genes encoding putative Sec14p homologs have been Here we report the identification of two yeast Sec14-like genes (designated as AtSFH3 and AtSFH12, respectively) that are predominately transcribed in Arabidopsis flowers. The deduced amino acid sequences of, AtSfh3p and AtSfh12p exhibited high similarity to that of Sec14p. Ectopic expression of AtSfh3p or AtSfh12p corrected the high temperature sensitive phenotype caused by Sec14p functional deficiency in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, indicating that the two plant homologs are functional in the intracellular environment. AtSFH3 transcripts were detected in flowers, stems and immature siliques but not roots and leaves, with a relatively higher transcript level in the flowers. In contrast, AtSFH12 transcripts were only detectable in the flowers. Based on histochemical staining of beta-glucuronidase (GUS) activities in the transgenic Arabidopsis plants harboring promoter::GUS constructs, AtSFH3 transcription was first detected in the stigma papillae of the flowers at stage 11, and then in the pollen grains before and after fertilization. On the other hand, AtSFH12 transcription was only found in the mature and germinating pollen grains. The information from this study may provide useful clue for further analysis of the function of plant Sec14p homologs in the development of the mate gametic cells and/or the fertilization process in higher plants.     Classification of gluteal muscle contracture in children and outcome of different treatments

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Gluteal muscle contracture (GMC) is a clinical syndrome due to multiple etiologies in which hip movements may be severely limited. The aim of this study was to propose a detailed classification of GMC and evaluate the statistical association between outcomes of different management and patient conditions.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>One hundred fifty-eight patients, who were treated between January 1995 and December 2004, were reviewed at a mean duration of follow-up of 4.8 years. Statistical analyses were performed using X<sup>2 </sup>and Fisher's exact tests.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Non-operative management (NOM), as a primary treatment, was effective in 19 of 49 patients (38.8%), while operative management was effective in all 129 patients, with an excellence rating of 83.7% (108/129). The outcome of NOM in level I patients was significantly higher than in level II and III patients (<it>P </it>< 0.05). The results of NOM and operative management in the child group were better than the adolescent group (<it>P </it>< 0.05). Complications in level III were more than in level II.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>NOM was more effective in level I patients than in level II and III patients. Operative management was effective in patients at all levels, with no statistical differences between levels or types. We recommend NOM as primary treatment for level I patients and operative management for level II and III patients. Either NOM or operative management should be carried out as early as possible.</p

    Five-Year Longitudinal Assessment of the Downstream Impact on Schistosomiasis Transmission following Closure of the Three Gorges Dam

    Schistosomiasis, caused by Schistosoma japonicum, is a significant parasitic disease and public health problem in China. How the parasite is transmitted there can be categorized into four distinct modes (modes I–IV) and it is predicted that the Three Gorges Dam, recently completed, will affect the way schistosomiasis is spread in these modes. We monitored transmission for a 5-year period (2002–2006) in eight villages, representative of the three modes (I–III) below the dam across four provinces (Hunan, Jiangxi, Hubei and Anhui) to determine whether there was any immediate impact of the dam on schistosomiasis spread. Human schistosomiasis incidence declined considerably within individual villages and each mode, and the yearly odds ratios (adjusted) for infection risk showed significant downward trends in all three modes over the follow-up period. The decreased human S. japonicum incidence recorded across transmission modes I–III was probably attributable to annual human and bovine praziquantel drug treatment. If an increase in schistosome transmission had occurred as a result of the dam, it would be of negligible size compared with this treatment-induced decline. There had thus been virtually no immediate impact of the TGD on schistosomiasis transmission downstream of the dam over the 5-year surveillance period
