NMR Studies of Field Induced Magnetism in CeCoIn
Recent Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and elastic neutron scattering experiments
have revealed conclusively the presence of static incommensurate magnetism in
the field-induced B phase of CeCoIn5. We analyze the NMR data assuming the
hyperfine coupling to the In(2) nuclei is anisotropic and simulate the spectra
for several different magnetic structures. The NMR data are consistent with
ordered Ce moments along the [001] direction, but are relatively insensitive to
the direction of the incommensurate wavevector.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Evidence for internal field in graphite: A conduction electron spin resonance study
We report conduction electron spin resonance measurements performed on highly
oriented pyrolitic graphite samples between 10 K and 300 K using S (f = 4 GHz),
X (f = 9.4 GHz), and Q (f = 34.4 GHz) microwave bands for the external
dc-magnetic field applied parallel (H || c) and perpendicular (H perp c) to the
sample hexagonal c-axis. The results obtained in the H || c geometry are
interpreted in terms of the presence of an effective internal
ferromagnetic-like field Heff-int(T,H) that increases as the temperature
decreases and the applied dc-magnetic field increases. We associate the
occurrence of the Heff-int(T,H) with the field-induced metal-insulator
transition in graphite and discuss its origin in the light of relevant
theoretical models.Comment: 10 pages (tex), 5 figures (ps
HYPOGLYCEMIC, ANTI-INFLAMMATORY EFFECT OF PORANG (AMORPHOPHALLUS ONCHOPYLLUS) ON ALLOXAN-INDUCED DIABETIC RATS
Introduction: Iles-iles / Porang is a tuber-producing plant that is commonly found in Indonesia. One of the most sought after content from Porang is Glucomannan. One of Porang’s health benefit is related to the effect of lowering blood glucose levels because it can prevent glucose absorption. These benefit is interesting to study because there has been no research linking the use of Porang to reduce inflammatory process in hyperglycmic conditions.
Purpose: This study aims to analyze the anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and hypoglycemis effects of Glucomannan from Porang (Amorphophallus onchophyllus) extract in experimental animals.
Method: The research design was a true experimental post-test only control group with random sampling to determine 5 white rats into the normal group, positive control group, negative control group and treatment 1, 2 and 3. The positive control group received Acarbose therapy thile the negative control group received carboxy-methyl-cellulose (CMC) therapy. This study used Porang extract (Amorphophallus onchophyllus) with concentrations of 200, 400 and 800 mg/Kg in hyperglycemic white rats that had been induced by Aloxan. The study was conducte for 50 days and then blood and serum samples were taken to assess the effect of hypoglycemia, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant using blood glucose, Malondialdehyde and C-reactiveprotein (CRP) measurement.
Result and Discussion: The results showed no significant difference between the groups of rats receiving Porang extract and the positive and negative control groups. However, the MDA levels after 50 days of intervention between the negative control group and the therapy with doses of 200, 400 and 800 mg/Kg showed significant differences. Similarly found for blood glucose levels after intervention between negative control group and the 200 and 400 mg/Kg therapy group. This results may be caused by the type of Porang used, the form of the Porang and the concentration level of the Porang extract.
Conclusion: Porang with the type of Amorphophallus onchophyllus can’t be used directly, but requires further processing to obtain the active substance Glucomannan
Hemipteran Beneficiosos: Damsel Bugs
Los insectos depredadores pueden proveer un control de pestes natural al comer insectos no deseados. Este servicio beneficioso se llama control biológico. Los insectos depredadores son una de las razones por las que las poblaciones de pestes pueden mantenerse a niveles no-dañinos
Possible new ways in the pharmacological treatment of bipolar disorder and comorbid alcoholism.
Possible new ways in the pharmacological treatment of bipolar disorder and comorbid alcoholism. Azorin JM, Bowden CL, Garay RP, Perugi G, Vieta E, Young AH. Source Department of Psychiatry, CHU Sainte Marguerite, Marseilles, France. Abstract About half of all bipolar patients have an alcohol abuse problem at some point of their lifetime. However, only one randomized, controlled trial of pharmacotherapy (valproate) in this patient population was published as of 2006. Therefore, we reviewed clinical trials in this indication of the last four years (using mood stabilizers, atypical antipsychotics, and other drugs). Priority was given to randomized trials, comparing drugs with placebo or active comparator. Published studies were found through systematic database search (PubMed, Scirus, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Science Direct). In these last four years, the only randomized, clinically relevant study in bipolar patients with comorbid alcoholism is that of Brown and colleagues (2008) showing that quetiapine therapy decreased depressive symptoms in the early weeks of use, without modifying alcohol use. Several other open-label trials have been generally positive and support the efficacy and tolerability of agents from different classes in this patient population. Valproate efficacy to reduce excessive alcohol consumption in bipolar patients was confirmed and new controlled studies revealed its therapeutic benefit to prevent relapse in newly abstinent alcoholics and to improve alcohol hallucinosis. Topiramate deserves to be investigated in bipolar patients with comorbid alcoholism since this compound effectively improves physical health and quality of life of alcohol-dependent individuals. In conclusion, randomized, controlled research is still needed to provide guidelines for possible use of valproate and other agents in patients with a dual diagnosis of bipolar disorder and substance abuse or dependence

Spatial housing economics: a survey
This introduction to the Virtual Special Issue surveys the development of spatial housing economics from its roots in neo-classical theory, through more recent developments in social interactions modelling, and touching on the role of institutions, path dependence and economic history. The survey also points to some of the more promising future directions for the subject that are beginning to appear in the literature. The survey covers elements hedonic models, spatial econometrics, neighbourhood models, housing market areas, housing supply, models of segregation, migration, housing tenure, sub-national house price modelling including the so-called ripple effect, and agent-based models. Possible future directions are set in the context of a selection of recent papers that have appeared in Urban Studies. Nevertheless, there are still important gaps in the literature that merit further attention, arising at least partly from emerging policy problems. These include more research on housing and biodiversity, the relationship between housing and civil unrest, the effects of changing age distributions - notably housing for the elderly - and the impact of different international institutional structures. Methodologically, developments in Big Data provide an exciting framework for future work
