Effects of avitriptan, a new 5 HT(1B/1D) receptor agonist, in experimental models predictive of antimigraine activity and coronary side-effect potential
Abstract
Several acutely acting antimigraine drugs, including ergotamine and sumatriptan, have the ability to constrict porcine arteriovenous anastomoses as well as the human isolated coronary artery. These two experimental models seem to serve as indicators, respectively, f
Federal Practice - Venue - Applicability of General Venue Satute to Defendant Brought Into a Case After Removal from the State Court
Plaintiffs, citizens of Missouri, originally brought suit in an Alabama state court against D1, a citizen of Virginia, and D2, a citizen of Minnesota, to recover for injuries sustained in an automobile accident which occurred in Alabama. After defendants had removed to the federal district court, plaintiffs amended their complaint to include D3, a citizen of Florida, service of process having been made in accordance with the Alabama nonresident motorist statute. By special appearance, D3 moved for dismissal because of improper venue. Held, motion granted and cause dismissed as to D3. While the original action was removed from the state court, the action against D3 was commenced in the federal court and is subject to the general venue provisions which apply to diversity of citizenship cases and which require that all plaintiffs or\u27 all defendants reside within the judicial district. Criminal Law - Felony - Murder-Guilt of Robber for the Justifiable Killing of His Accomplice by a Policeman
The defendant was convicted of murder in the first degree for the death of his co-felon resulting from a wound inflicted by a policeman while the felons were fleeing the scene of a robbery. On appeal to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, held, reversed, one judge dissenting. For conviction in felony-murder, the killing must be done by the defendant or by one acting in furtherance of the felonious undertaking. One cannot be convicted for the consequences of lawful conduct of another person. Commonwealth v. Redline, 391 Pa. 486, 137 A. (2d) 472 (1958)
Origin and evolution of the octoploid strawberry genome.
Cultivated strawberry emerged from the hybridization of two wild octoploid species, both descendants from the merger of four diploid progenitor species into a single nucleus more than 1 million years ago. Here we report a near-complete chromosome-scale assembly for cultivated octoploid strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) and uncovered the origin and evolutionary processes that shaped this complex allopolyploid. We identified the extant relatives of each diploid progenitor species and provide support for the North American origin of octoploid strawberry. We examined the dynamics among the four subgenomes in octoploid strawberry and uncovered the presence of a single dominant subgenome with significantly greater gene content, gene expression abundance, and biased exchanges between homoeologous chromosomes, as compared with the other subgenomes. Pathway analysis showed that certain metabolomic and disease-resistance traits are largely controlled by the dominant subgenome. These findings and the reference genome should serve as a powerful platform for future evolutionary studies and enable molecular breeding in strawberry
Eticidad y situacionalidad. Elementos para una crítica social
This article proposes, in the first step, to undertake a reconstructive exploration of the meanings and uses that Hegel develops and applies to his notion of ethical life (Sittlichkeit) through the analysis in three of his key works: System of Ethical Life, Encyclopedia of Philosophical Sciences, and eventually the discussion of its application in the foundational lines of Philosophy of Right. This key concept will show its effectiveness in contributing to Hegel’s diagnosis of his era, in an attempt to restore meaning and integrity amidst the fragmentation of his contemporary society.
This first step leads, in turn, to a second instance where it is possible to find an updated version of this Hegelian idea in the work of Axel Honneth in connection with the ideas of freedom and justice. Following the model of a normative reconstruction derived from Hegel, the formalization of the concept of ethical life will be further proposed to enhance its productivity in social analysis and contemporary theoretical debates.
Finally, the formal concept of ethical life implies the thematization of aspects that require a “situational approach” as a key relevant analytic tool, one that must adopt a critical perspective in order to properly understand social and political processes with effective geo-historical-political determinations. The aim is to bring into tension the “formal concept of ethical life” and the elements of a “situational approach” in order to show how the situation becomes relevant to foster critical thinking about reality.

Leveraging angiosperm pangenomics to understand genome evolution
My dissertation work focused on species-level comparative genomics and pangenomics to describe patterns of genetic variation. I studied multiple systems and unsurprisingly discovered different patterns of variation. Within a species, individuals are genetically diverse. There are some DNA regions present in every individual (core), while others may be specific to a single individual or lineage (variable). The sum of the genetic sequences found across an entire taxonomic group is called the pangenome. This DNA variation greatly contributes to observed phenotypic differences between individuals. Therefore, to understand genome evolution and the link between genotype and phenotype, we must understand the pangenome. In this work, I compare the core and variable genetic regions both coding and noncoding across different flowering plant lineages. I note many consistent features across lineages as well as ways in which each pangenomic pattern is unique. These consistencies and differences can be leveraged in the future to better understand genome evolution as well as how genotype relates to phenotype. Specifically, my dissertation includes four chapters; (1) Evolution of Conserved Noncoding Sequences in Arabidopsis thaliana, (2) Machine learning identifies differences between core and variable genes in Brachypodium distachyon and Oryza sativa, (3) Current status and future perspectives on the evolution of cis-regulatory elements in plants, and (4) A pangenome for Vaccinium.Thesis (Ph. Stigma Towards Offenders Diagnosed with Mental Illness
Mental health stigma is a key factor to what makes members of the community who are diagnosed with mental illness feel like outcasts to the “normal” population. This study investigated the relationship between right-winged beliefs and offenders diagnosed with mental illness. Sigma as it relates to mental health, offenders, and right-winged beliefs have been studied separately before, but there is a lack of information on the stigma that the public has towards offenders who struggle with their mental health and the possible predictors of stigma towards this group. Overall, this study aimed to further research in the intersectionality of stigmatized groups by examining the extent to which community members stigmatize offenders diagnosed with mental illness. Community members completed a survey that included the Public Attitudes Towards Offenders with Mental Illness scale, which is made up of 28 Likert scale questions, as well as 20-item Right Wing Authoritarianism scale. Participants also answered a set of open-ended questions that were related to potential bias and perceptions, and demographic questions to examine possible predictors of public attitudes. This research shed light on public perception and gained insight into possible predictors of these attitudes to understand difficulties and judgement this population may face when trying to reintegrate back into the community
