Character association and path analysis studies in germplasm lines of rabi sorghum (Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench)
The field experiment was carried out using 121 germplasm lines of rabi sorghum to study association among the yield and its component traits, direct and indirect effects of traits on the yield. Association studies indicat-ed that at both genotypic and phenotypic levels, panicle width (rg=0.190; rp=0.204) and 1000 grain weight (rg=0.450; rp=0.520) showed significantly positive correlation with grain yield per plant. Genotypic correlation magnitude was higher than phenotypic correlation. Partitioning of yield and yield components both at phenotypic and genotypic levels into direct and indirect effects revealed that the characters that had positive direct effects on grain yield were 1000 grain weight (Ppi=+0.3085, Pgi=+0.4621), panicle length (Ppi=+0.1516, Pgi=+0.2843), days to maturity (Ppi=+0.1539, Pgi=+0.1391) at both genotypic and phenotypic level. On grain yield indicating importance of these characters hence, due consideration should be given to these characters while planning a breeding strategy by utilizing rabisorghum
Diagnostic efficacy of panoramic mandibular index to identify postmenopausal women with low bone mineral densities
Objectives:
The aim of the study was to compare and assess the accuracy of panoramic mandibular index (PMI) and
antegonial index (AI) in the panoramic radiographs of postmenopausal women with normal and low skeletal bone
mineral densities( BMD) diagnosed by using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry ( DXA).
Study Design:
In panoramic radiographs obtained from 40 post menopausal women( 20 normal and 20 osteoporo
tic) aged between 50-75 who’s BMD has already been assessed by a DXA, the mean was calculated for PMI and
AI index values measured in the right and left mandibles. The PMI and AI index values were evaluated using the
student’s t test. The correlation between the observers for indices was calculated by Pearson correlation coefficient
test.
Results:
A statistically difference was shown between the PMI values in the osteoporotic group and normal group
(t = 13.280, p < 0.001); however, AI showed no significant difference between the groups. For PMI, the area under
the receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis in identifying women with low BMD was 0.821 ( Standard error: SE
= 0.0676), 95% confidence interval (Cl) = 0.668 to 0.924) which was moderately accurate.
Conclusion:
PMI values were found to be smaller among female patients with osteoporosis, compared with normal
patients in the present study. Our results suggest that PMI has a better efficacy in identifying postmenopausal women with osteoporosis in comparison with AI
Leukocyte adhesion deficiency type I - a focus on oral disease in a young child
This paper presents a case of the moderate form of Leukocyte adhesion deficiency type 1 (LAD-1) in a 4 year-old boy. LAD-1 is a rare, inherited immunodeficiency that affects 1 in 1 million people yearly. Affected patients are susceptible to recurrent bacterial and fungal infections, impaired pus formation and delayed wound healing. In the oral clinical finding, more important is a generalized prepuberal periodontitis that can affect the primary and permanent dentitions. For this reason cooperation between dentists and pediatricians is essential in these patients. Evaluating immune system in these patients included peripheral blood leukocyte counts, measurement of serum immunoglobulin levels, assessment of complement level and function, flow cytometric analysis of lymphocyte subsets, and tests of phagocytic function (nitrobluetetrazolium test (NBT)). In families with known molecular defect, an earlier prenatal diagnosis is possible by chorionic villi biopsy. The most important focus should be to control infections. Treatment includes systemic antibiotics and in many cases bone marrow transplantation
Langerhans cell histiocytosis with oral manifestations: a rare and unusual case report
Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), is a rare, proliferative disorder in which the accumulation of pathologic
Langerhans cells leads to local tissue infiltration and destruction. We present a case of a 32 years old, completely
edentulous female patient who presented with erythema of hard palate, maxillary alveolar mucosa and mucosa over
the distobuccal part of mandibular alveolar ridge with foci of ulcerations. Histopathologic features were suggestive
of LCH which was confirmed by immunohistochemistry which was CD1a positive, confirmatory for LCH. Bone
scan revealed multiple bone involvement. At this stage, disease had already progressed to multisystem involvement
with endocrinal abnormalities (primary hypothyroidism and hyperprolactinemia), requiring aggressive treatment.
Therefore, this case is a reminder of the possibility of occurrence of this rare disease in the oral cavity which might
manifest itself in multiple presentations thus easily leading to the misdiagnosis and therefore, it could be easily
overlooked by dentists
Tumour associated tissue eosinophilia as a predictor of locoregional recurrence in oral squamous cell carcinoma
Objectives: The increasing global burden of oral cancer has driven much of the focus of research to the determina
-
tion of reliable prognostic markers which may have significant effects on survival and the control of post-treatment
morbidity. This study was undertaken to evaluate tumour associated tissue eosinophilia (TATE) quantitatively in
oral cancer specimens and observe for its possible association with tumour stage, patterns of locoregional recurren
-
ce and overall prognosis.
Study Design: 14 patients undergoing surgical resection for primary oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) were
subjected to grey scale ultrasonography (USG) to assess tumour dimensions. The findings were compared with the
cTNM stage initially documented. TATE was evaluated along the invasive tumour front (ITF) using H & E stained
sections of histopathological specimens for 10 continuous high power fields (HPF) and graded as mild, moderate
or intense. Patients were followed up over 5 years and observed for patterns of recurrence.
Results: Loco regional recurrence was significantly associated with intense degree of TATE. (
p
<0.001) cTNM stage
as well as USG stage did not correlate with the degree of TATE with
p
=0.419 and 0.772 respectively. None of the
patients with mild/ moderate dysplasia developed locoregional recurrence within the period of follow up.
Conclusions: Analysis of TATE in OSCC patients may provide an early indication of future locoregional recurren
-
ce. Identification of an appropriate biopsy site representing the ITF where TATE analysis can be performed may be
a simple, inexpensive method of obtaining valuable prognostic information at the time of diagnosis
TcI isolates of Trypanosoma cruzi exploit the antioxidant network for enhanced intracellular survival in macrophages and virulence in mice
Trypanosoma cruzi species is categorized into six discrete typing units (TcI to TcVI) of which TcI is most abundantly noted in the sylvatic transmission cycle and considered the major cause of human disease. In our study, the TcI strains Colombiana (COL), SylvioX10/4 (SYL), and a cultured clone (TCC) exhibited different biological behavior in a murine model, ranging from high parasitemia and symptomatic cardiomyopathy (SYL), mild parasitemia and high tissue tropism (COL), to no pathogenicity (TCC). Proteomic profiling of the insect (epimastigote) and infective (trypomastigote) forms by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis/ matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry, followed by functional annotation of the differential proteome data sets (≥2-fold change, P<0.05), showed that several proteins involved in (i) cytoskeletal assembly and remodeling, essential for flagellar wave frequency and amplitude and forward motility of the parasite, and (ii) the parasite-specific antioxidant network were enhanced in COL and SYL (versus TCC) trypomastigotes. Western blotting confirmed the enhanced protein levels of cytosolic and mitochondrial tryparedoxin peroxidases and their substrate (tryparedoxin) and iron superoxide dismutase in COL and SYL (versus TCC) trypomastigotes. Further, COL and SYL (but not TCC) were resistant to exogenous treatment with stable oxidants (H2O2 and peroxynitrite [ONOO-]) and dampened the intracellular superoxide and nitric oxide response in macrophages, and thus these isolates escaped from macrophages. Our findings suggest that protein expression conducive to increase in motility and control of macrophage-derived free radicals provides survival and persistence benefits to TcI isolates of T. cruzi.Fil: Zago, María Paola. Efficacy of light based detection systems for early detection of oral cancer and oral potentially malignant disorders: systematic review
Background: Earlier detection of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and oral potentially malignant disorders
(OPMD) is essential for dental professionals to improve patient survival rates. The aim of this systematic review
is to to evaluate the effectiveness of devices that utilise the principles of chemiluminescence and tissue autofluorescence
as adjuncts in the detection of OSCC and OPMD.
Material and Methods: The electronic retrieval systems and databases searched for relevant articles were PubMed
[MEDLINE] and Science direct. The search was for limited articles published in English or with an English abstract
and articles published during the period from January 2005 to April 2014. Clinical trials utilized ViziLite,
Microlux TM/DL and Visual Enhanced Light scope (VELscope) for early detection of OPMD and OSCC.
Results: Twenty primary studies published satisfied our criteria for selection - 10 utilised chemiluminescence and
10 tissue autofluorescence. Senstivity of Vizilite for detecting OSCC nad OPMD ranged from 77.1 % to 100% and
specificity was low that ranged from 0% to 27.8%.Most have shown that chemiluminescence increases the brightness
and margins of oral mucosal white lesions and thus assist in identification of mucosal lesions not considered
under Conventional visual examination. However, it preferentially detects leukoplakia and may fail to spot red
patches. Clinical trials demonstrated that sensitivity of VELscope in detecting malignancy and OPMD ranged
from 22 % to 100 % and specificity ranged from 16 % to 100%. Most studies concluded that VELscope can help
the experienced clinician to find oral precursor malignant lesions. But it couldnot differentiate between dysplasia
and benign inflammatory conditions.
Conclusions: Both devices are simple, non-invasive test of the oral mucosa but are suited for clinicians with sufficient
experience and training. More clinical trials in future should be conducted to establish optical imaging as an efficacious
adjunct tool in early diagnosis of OSCC and OPMD
Digital Social Enterprise for Sustainable Development: Insights from the Case Study in Nepal
It is generally agreed that digital social enterprises (DSE) through the digitalization process can contribute to sustainable development. However, there are a few theoretical and empirical studies in this research stream. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a qualitative interpretive case study in Nepal. Applying the theory of affordances as an analytical tool, we identified five digital affordances: transactability, communicability, accessibility, manageability, and digitizability. By actualizing these affordances, DSEs can contribute to access to market and finance, social engagement, waste management, and digitized information. We also identified various challenges such as lack of awareness about digital affordances and capabilities to actualize those affordances, lack of digital culture, and poor mapping system that can inhibit the actualization of the affordances and showed the facilitating conditions that can address these challenges. Finally, we suggest future research avenues
SWOT ANALYSIS OF MODERN AND TRADITIONAL SHOPS IN THANE CITY
There has been an increase in the number of retail formats emerging in India. The last few years have seen new formats of retail spreading out to the second-tier cities and towns. Consumers in these areas are exposed to modern shopping options and experiences like never before. Competition amongst formats is increasing with Modern Trade eating into the pie of Traditional retailers. Retailers need to become aware of their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, Maximize their strengths and opportunities, Minimize their weaknesses and threats, and develop suitable/appropriate strategies to benefit by applying the same. Hence a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, and Opportunities, Threats) analysis of Modern and Traditional retailers will help to capture, analyze and convert consumer data into actionable information and transform their professional models to survive and thrive. A Quota Sample of 559 Households of Low, Medium, and High-income groups was studied through the Survey method, in Thane City, Maharashtra, India. This paper attempts to explore Product, Service, Customer, Promotion, Payment and Other considerations that are essential to shoppers which both Modern and Traditional retailers need to take cognizance of
