Characterization of a wheat HSP70 gene and its expression in response to stripe rust infection and abiotic stresses
Members of the family of 70-kD heat shock proteins (HSP70 s) play various stress-protective roles in plants. In this study, a wheat HSP70 gene was isolated from a suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) cDNA library of wheat leaves infected by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici. The gene, that was designated as TaHSC70, was predicted to encode a protein of 690 amino acids, with a molecular mass of 73.54 KDa and a pI of 5.01. Further analysis revealed the presence of a conserved signature that is characteristic for HSP70s and phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that TaHSC70 is a homolog of chloroplast HSP70s. TaHSC70 mRNA was present in leaves of both green and etiolated wheat seedlings and in stems and roots. The transcript level in roots was approximately threefold less than in leaves but light–dark treatment did not charge TaHSC70 expression. Following heat shock of wheat seedlings at 40°C, TaHSC70 expression increased in leaves of etiolated seedlings but remained stable at the same level in green seedlings. In addition, TaHSC70 was differentially expressed during an incompatible and compatible interaction with wheat-stripe rust, and there was a transient increase in expression upon treatment with methyl jasmonate (MeJA) treatment. Salicylic acid (SA), ethylene (ET) and abscisic acid (ABA) treatments had no influence on TaHSC70 expression. These results suggest that TaHSC70 plays a role in stress-related responses, and in defense responses elicited by infection with stripe rust fungus and does so via a JA-dependent signal transduction pathway
Relationship between lipoproteins, thrombosis and atrial fibrillation
The prothrombotic state in atrial fibrillation (AF) occurs as a result of multifaceted interactions, known as Virchow’s triad of hypercoagulability, structural abnormalities, and blood stasis. More recently, there is emerging evidence that lipoproteins are implicated in this process, beyond their traditional role in atherosclerosis. In this review, we provide an overview of the various lipoproteins and explore the association between lipoproteins and AF, the effects of lipoproteins on haemostasis, and the potential contribution of lipoproteins to thrombogenesis in AF. There are several types of lipoproteins based on size, lipid composition, and apolipoprotein category, namely: chylomicrons, very low-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), intermediate-density lipoprotein, and high-density lipoprotein. Each of these lipoproteins may contain numerous lipid species and proteins with a variety of different functions. Furthermore, the lipoprotein particles may be oxidized causing an alteration in their structure and content. Of note, there is a paradoxical inverse relationship between total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) levels, and incident AF. The mechanism by which this occurs may be related to the stabilizing effect of cholesterol on myocardial membranes, along with its role in inflammation. Overall, specific lipoproteins may interact with haemostatic pathways to promote excess platelet activation and thrombin generation, as well as inhibiting fibrinolysis. In this regard, LDL-C has been shown to be an independent risk factor for thromboembolic events in AF. The complex relationship between lipoproteins, thrombosis and AF warrants further research with an aim to improve our knowledge base and contribute to our overall understanding of lipoprotein-mediated thrombosis
History effect in inhomogeneous superconductors
A model was proposed to account for a new kind of history effect in the
transport measurement of a sample with inhomogeneous flux pinning coupled with
flux creep. The inhomogeneity of flux pinning was described in terms of
alternating weak pinning (lower jc) and strong pinning region (higher jc). The
flux creep was characterized by logarithmic barrier. Based on this model, we
numerically observed the same clockwise V-I loops as reported in references.
Moreover, we predicted behaviors of the V-I loop at different sweeping rates of
applied current dI/dt or magnetic fields Ba, etc. Electric transport
measurement was performed in Ag-sheathed Bi2-xPbxSr2Ca2Cu3Oy tapes immersed in
liquid nitrogen with and without magnetic fields. V-I loop at certain dI/dt and
Ba was observed. It is found that the area of the loop is more sensitive to
dI/dt than to Ba, which is in agreement well with our numerical results.Comment: To appear in Phys Rev B, October 1 Issu

Simplified Geleijnse score for identifying chest pain features associated with coronary ischemia
BackgroundThe Geleijnse score, which was proposed to assess for coronary ischemia, has practical limitations.ObjectivesOur aim was to design and evaluate a simplified version of the Geleijnse score.MethodsWe enrolled patients with suspected coronary heart disease but negative troponin T or absence of enzymatic curve, and a non-diagnostic 12-lead ECG. The initial study was performed in a retrospective derivation cohort and the results were subsequently validated in a prospective cohort.ResultsFrom 109 patients included in the derivation cohort, 33 (30.3%) received a diagnosis of coronary heart disease. Chest pain with both arms radiation (OR 3.54), severe intensity (OR 2.41), improvement by nitroglycerin (OR 1.61), associated dyspnea (OR 1.97) and prior exertional angina history (OR 2.91) were independently associated with an ischemic origin on multivariate logistic regression analysis. ROC curves comparison demonstrated both the original and simplified scores presented modest predictive ability with significant difference when analyzed using dichotomous cut-offs (0.647 [simplified] vs. 0.544 [original], p = 0.042) but not as a continuous variable (0.670 [simplified] vs. 0.621 [original], p = 0.396). In 305 patients from the validation cohort, the simplified score presented extensively increased predictive accuracy than the Geleijnse, in the continuous (c-indexes = 0.735 vs. 0.685, p = 0.040) and the dichotomic (c-indexes = 0.682 vs. 0.514, pConclusionsA simplified version of the Geleijnse score, including some routine clinical manifestations associated with coronary heart disease, presented significantly better predictive ability compared to the original score
MARS therapy, the bridging to liver retransplantation-Three cases from the Hungarian liver transplant program
Besides orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) there is no long-term and effective replacement therapy for severe liver failure. Artificial extracorporeal liver supply devices are able to reduce blood toxin levels, but do not replace any synthetic function of the liver. Molecular adsorbent recirculating system (MARS) is one of the methods that can be used to treat fulminant acute liver failure (ALF) or acute on chronic liver failure (AoCLF). The primary non-function (PNF) of the newly transplanted liver manifests in the clinical settings exactly like acute liver failure. MARS treatment can reduce the severity of complications by eliminating blood toxins, so that it can help hepatic encephalopathy (HE), hepatorenal syndrome (HRS), and the high rate mortality of cerebral herniation. This might serve as a bridging therapy before orthotopic liver retransplantation (reOLT). Three patients after a first liver transplantation became candidate for urgent MARS treatment as a bridging solution prior to reOLT in our center. Authors report these three cases, focusing on indications, MARS sessions, clinical courses, and final outcomes. © 2013 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest
The energy spectrum of all-particle cosmic rays around the knee region observed with the Tibet-III air-shower array
We have already reported the first result on the all-particle spectrum around
the knee region based on data from 2000 November to 2001 October observed by
the Tibet-III air-shower array. In this paper, we present an updated result
using data set collected in the period from 2000 November through 2004 October
in a wide range over 3 decades between eV and eV, in which
the position of the knee is clearly seen at around 4 PeV. The spectral index is
-2.68 0.02(stat.) below 1PeV, while it is -3.12 0.01(stat.) above 4
PeV in the case of QGSJET+HD model, and various systematic errors are under
study now.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted by Advances in space researc
Moon Shadow by Cosmic Rays under the Influence of Geomagnetic Field and Search for Antiprotons at Multi-TeV Energies
We have observed the shadowing of galactic cosmic ray flux in the direction
of the moon, the so-called moon shadow, using the Tibet-III air shower array
operating at Yangbajing (4300 m a.s.l.) in Tibet since 1999. Almost all cosmic
rays are positively charged; for that reason, they are bent by the geomagnetic
field, thereby shifting the moon shadow westward. The cosmic rays will also
produce an additional shadow in the eastward direction of the moon if cosmic
rays contain negatively charged particles, such as antiprotons, with some
fraction. We selected 1.5 x10^{10} air shower events with energy beyond about 3
TeV from the dataset observed by the Tibet-III air shower array and detected
the moon shadow at level. The center of the moon was detected
in the direction away from the apparent center of the moon by 0.23 to
the west. Based on these data and a full Monte Carlo simulation, we searched
for the existence of the shadow produced by antiprotons at the multi-TeV energy
region. No evidence of the existence of antiprotons was found in this energy
region. We obtained the 90% confidence level upper limit of the flux ratio of
antiprotons to protons as 7% at multi-TeV energies.Comment: 13pages,4figures; Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physic
