    Airborne microorganisms and dust from livestock houses

    The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiencies and suitability of samplers for airborne microorganisms and dust, which could be used in practical livestock houses. Two studies were performed: 1) Testing impaction and cyclone pre-separators for dust sampling in livestock houses; 2) Determining sampling efficiencies of four bioaerosol samplers for bacteria and virus. Study 1. The overloading problem of the EU reference impaction pre-separator (IPS) was tested in layer houses and compared with cyclone pre-separators (CPS) for sampling PM10 and PM2.5. Study 2. Physical and biological efficiencies of Andersen 6-stage impactor, all glass impinger (AGI-30), high air flow rate sampler OMNI-3000, and MD8 with gelatin filter were investigated for collecting aerosolized bacteria, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Campylobacter jejuni and Mycoplasma synoviae and live Gumboro vaccine virus. A tracer (uranine) was used to determine physical efficiencies and bioaerosol deposition. The study was done in a HEPA isolator (volume: 1.3 m3). The results show the PM10 IPS did not become overloaded in 24 h measurements in layer houses, whereas PM2.5 IPS became overloaded within 1 h. CPS did not become overloaded during 48 h sampling of both dust fractions. The OMNI-3000 (62%) had lower physical efficiency than the MD8, while the other samplers had similar efficiencies as MD8. All the bioaerosol samplers had high biological efficiencies for all four bacterial species, except for C. jejuni (1%) when measured with the OMNI-3000 and for E. coli (38%) and C. jejuni (2%) when measured with the MD8. The biological efficiencies of the Andersen impactor (61%), the AGI-30 (90%) and the MD8 (163%) were not significantly different from 100% for collecting the aerosolized virus. However, the biological efficiency (23%) of the OMNI-3000 was significantly lower than 100%

    Detection of airborne Campylobacter with three bioaerosol samplers for alarming bacteria transmission in broilers.

    In an airborne transmission experiment, Campylobacter in the air was sampled by three types of bioaerosol samplers (all-glass impinger AGI-30, Andersen six-stage impactor, and OMNI-3000) in four broiler rooms. In each room, five 14-day- old broilers inoculated with Campylobacter jejuni were kept in a central cage located in the middle of the room. Another ten broilers, as susceptible animals, were kept individually in ten cages surrounding the central cage at a distance of approximately 75 cm. Air samples were taken on eight days: the day before inoculation (BI) as a negative control, and 1, 3, 6, 9, 14, 21, and 29 days post-inoculation (PI). Presence of C. jejuni was investigated with the culture method for culturable bacteria and with the PCR test for bacterial DNA. Results showed that Campylobacter infection of susceptible broilers occurred in all four rooms; however, no culturable C. jejuni could be detected in any of the air samples. This might have been the result of the low number of broilers in the room and the unfavorable conditions for Campylobacter survival, leading to Campylobacter concentrations below the detection limits of the bioaerosol samplers. The PCR test showed that DNA of C. jejuni was detected in the air samples on the first day PI, but no bacterial DNA was detected on the following days. It is concluded that the three samplers used in this study are not able to alarm Campylobacter outbreaks through an airborne route when low bacterial concentrations are present. Developments of new sampling techniques with low detection limits are required for biosecurity assessment

    Scattering Theory of Charge-Current Induced Magnetization Dynamics

    In ferromagnets, charge currents can excite magnons via the spin-orbit coupling. We develop a novel and general scattering theory of charge current induced macrospin magnetization torques in normal metal∣|ferromagnet∣|normal metal layers. We apply the formalism to a dirty GaAs∣|(Ga,Mn)As∣|GaAs system. By computing the charge current induced magnetization torques and solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, we find magnetization switching for current densities as low as 5×106 5\times 10^{6}~A/cm2^2. Our results are in agreement with a recent experimental observation of charge-current induced magnetization switching in (Ga,Mn)As.Comment: Final version accepted by EP

    Onsager approach to 1D solidification problem and its relation to phase field description

    We give a general phenomenological description of the steady state 1D front propagation problem in two cases: the solidification of a pure material and the isothermal solidification of two component dilute alloys. The solidification of a pure material is controlled by the heat transport in the bulk and the interface kinetics. The isothermal solidification of two component alloys is controlled by the diffusion in the bulk and the interface kinetics. We find that the condition of positive-definiteness of the symmetric Onsager matrix of interface kinetic coefficients still allows an arbitrary sign of the slope of the velocity-concentration line near the solidus in the alloy problem or of the velocity-temperature line in the case of solidification of a pure material. This result offers a very simple and elegant way to describe the interesting phenomenon of a possible non-single-value behavior of velocity versus concentration which has previously been discussed by different approaches. We also discuss the relation of this Onsager approach to the thin interface limit of the phase field description.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review

    Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Diabetes Complications in the Northeastern United States: The Role of Socioeconomic Status

    The role of socioeconomic status (SES) in explaining racial/ethnic disparities in diabetes remains unclear. We investigated disparities in self-reported diabetes complications, and the role of macro (e.g., income, education) and micro (e.g., ‘owning a home’ or ‘having a checking account’) SES indicators in explaining these differences. The sample included individuals with a diagnosis of diabetes (N=795) who were on average 55 years old, and 55.6% non-Hispanic White, 25.0% African American, and 19.4% Hispanic. Approximately 8% reported nephropathy, 35% reported retinopathy, and 16% reported cardiovascular disease. There were significant disparities in the rates of complications among non-Hispanic White, African American and Hispanic participants, with Hispanics having the highest rates of nephropathy, retinopathy, and cardiovascular disease. Macro SES indicators (e.g., income) mediated racial differences (i.e., non-Hispanic Whites vs. African Americans) in self-reported retinopathy, a combination of macro and more micro SES indicators (e.g., education, income, and ‘owning a home’ or ‘having a checking account’) mediated racial/ethnic differences (i.e., non-Hispanic Whites vs. Hispanics) in self-reported cardiovascular disease, and only micro SES indicators (e.g., ‘owning a home’ or ‘having a checking account’) mediated differences between lower income SES racial/ethnic minority groups (i.e., African Americans vs. Hispanics) in self-reported retinopathy and cardiovascular disease. Findings underscore that indicators of SES must be sensitive to the outcome of interest and the racial/ethnic groups being compared

Het zorgt voor de systematische inwinning, centrale opslag en presentatie van monitoringgegevens die nodig zijn om de effectiviteit en efficiency van het plattelandsbeleid zoals vastgelegd in AVP te kunnen evalueren. Dit document beschrijft de ontwerp en implementatie van de Monitor Agenda Vitaal Platteland. Het document is bedoeld als naslagwerk voor technici die met de monitor werken. In such a context all non-trivial ergodic theory issues are by-passed, and the theorem takes a particularly simple form.     Non-equilibrium approach for binding free energies in cyclodextrins in SAMPL7: force fields and software

    In the current work we report on our participation in the SAMPL7 challenge calculating absolute free energies of the host–guest systems, where 2 guest molecules were probed against 9 hosts-cyclodextrin and its derivatives. Our submission was based on the non-equilibrium free energy calculation protocol utilizing an averaged consensus result from two force fields (GAFF and CGenFF). The submitted prediction achieved accuracy of 1.38kcal/mol in terms of the unsigned error averaged over the whole dataset. Subsequently, we further report on the underlying reasons for discrepancies between our calculations and another submission to the SAMPL7 challenge which employed a similar methodology, but disparate ligand and water force fields. As a result we have uncovered a number of issues in the dihedral parameter definition of the GAFF 2 force field. In addition, we identified particular cases in the molecular topologies where different software packages had a different interpretation of the same force field. This latter observation might be of particular relevance for systematic comparisons of molecular simulation software packages. The aforementioned factors have an influence on the final free energy estimates and need to be considered when performing alchemical calculations

    Spin-Electromagnetic Hydrodynamics and Magnetization Induced by Spin-Magnetic Interaction

    The hydrodynamic model including the spin degree of freedom and the electromagnetic field was discussed. In this derivation, we applied electromagnetism for macroscopic medium proposed by Minkowski. For the equation of motion of spin, we assumed that the hydrodynamic representation of the Pauli equation is reproduced when the many-body effect is neglected. Then the spin-magnetic interaction in the Pauli equation was converted to a part of the magnetization. The fluid and spin stress tensors induced by the many-body effect were obtained by employing the algebraic positivity of the entropy production in the framework of the linear irreversible thermodynamics, including the mixing effect of the irreversible currents. We further constructed the constitutive equation of the polarization and the magnetization. Our polarization equation is more reasonable compared to another result obtained using electromagnetism for macroscopic medium proposed by de Groot-Mazur.Comment: 24 pages, no figure, the discussion for the modifed thermodynamic relation is added, several errors are corrected, accepted for publication in PR
