Keck-I MOSFIRE spectroscopy of compact star-forming galaxies at z2: High velocity dispersions in progenitors of compact quiescent galaxies
We present Keck-I MOSFIRE near-infrared spectroscopy for a sample of 13
compact star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at redshift with star
formation rates of SFR100M y and masses of
log(M/M). Their high integrated gas velocity dispersions of
=230 km s, as measured from emission
lines of H and [OIII], and the resultant
M relation and MM all
match well to those of compact quiescent galaxies at , as measured from
stellar absorption lines. Since log(M/M)
dex, these compact SFGs appear to be dynamically relaxed and more evolved,
i.e., more depleted in gas and dark matter (13\%) than their
non-compact SFG counterparts at the same epoch. Without infusion of external
gas, depletion timescales are short, less than 300 Myr. This discovery
adds another link to our new dynamical chain of evidence that compact SFGs at
are already losing gas to become the immediate progenitors of
compact quiescent galaxies by .Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Ap
The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey. XV. The photometric redshift estimation for background sources
The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey is an optical imaging survey
covering 104 deg^2 centered on the Virgo cluster. Currently, the complete
survey area has been observed in the u*giz-bands and one third in the r-band.
We present the photometric redshift estimation for the NGVS background sources.
After a dedicated data reduction, we perform accurate photometry, with special
attention to precise color measurements through point spread
function-homogenization. We then estimate the photometric redshifts with the Le
Phare and BPZ codes. We add a new prior which extends to iAB = 12.5 mag. When
using the u*griz-bands, our photometric redshifts for 15.5 \le i \lesssim 23
mag or zphot \lesssim 1 galaxies have a bias |\Delta z| < 0.02, less than 5%
outliers, and a scatter \sigma_{outl.rej.} and an individual error on zphot
that increase with magnitude (from 0.02 to 0.05 and from 0.03 to 0.10,
respectively). When using the u*giz-bands over the same magnitude and redshift
range, the lack of the r-band increases the uncertainties in the 0.3 \lesssim
zphot \lesssim 0.8 range (-0.05 < \Delta z < -0.02, \sigma_{outl.rej} ~ 0.06,
10-15% outliers, and zphot.err. ~ 0.15). We also present a joint analysis of
the photometric redshift accuracy as a function of redshift and magnitude. We
assess the quality of our photometric redshifts by comparison to spectroscopic
samples and by verifying that the angular auto- and cross-correlation function
w(\theta) of the entire NGVS photometric redshift sample across redshift bins
is in agreement with the expectations.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS. 24 pages, 21 Figures (some with

Morphological Mutations of Dwarf Galaxies
Dwarf galaxies (DGs) are extremely challenging objects in extragalactic
astrophysics. They are expected to originate as the first units in Cold
Dark-Matter cosmology. They are the galaxy type most sensitive to environmental
influences and their division into multiple types with various properties have
invoked the picture of their variant morphological transformations. Detailed
observations reveal characteristics which allow to deduce the evolutionary
paths and to witness how the environment has affected the evolution. Here we
review peculiarities of general morphological DG types and refer to processes
which can deplete gas-rich irregular DGs leading to dwarf ellipticals, while
gas replenishment implies an evolutionary cycling. Finally, as the less
understood DG types the Milky Way satellite dwarf spheroidal galaxies are
discussed in the context of transformation.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, Proceedings of Symposium 3 of JENAM 2010 "Dwarf

A Virgo Environmental Survey Tracing Ionised Gas Emission (VESTIGE) IV. A tail of ionised gas in the merger remnant NGC4424
We observed the late-type peculiar galaxy NGC4424 during the Virgo Environmental Survey Tracing Galaxy Evolution (VESTIGE), a blind narrow-band H alpha+ [NII] imaging survey of the Virgo cluster carried out with MegaCam at the Canada-French-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). The presence of a similar to 110 kpc (in projected distance) HI tail in the southern direction indicates that this galaxy is undergoing a ram pressure stripping event. The deep narrow-band image revealed a low surface brightness (Sigma(H alpha) similar or equal to 4 x 10(-18) erg s(-1) cm(-2) arcsec(-2)) ionised gas tail similar to 10 kpc in length extending from the centre of the galaxy to the north-west, thus in the direction opposite to the HI tail. Chandra and XMM X-rays data do not show a compact source in the nucleus or an extended tail of hot gas, while IFU spectroscopy (MUSE) indicates that the gas is photo-ionised in the inner regions and shock-ionised in the outer parts. Medium-resolution (MUSE) (MUSE) indicates that the gas is photo-ionised in the inner regions and shock-ionised in the outer parts. Medium-resolution (MUSE) and high-resolution (Fabry-Perot) IFU spectroscopy confirms that the ionised gas is kinematically decoupled from the stellar component and indicates the presence of two kinematically distinct structures in the stellar disc. The analysis of the SED of the galaxy indicates that the activity of star formation was totally quenched in the outer disc similar to 250-280 Myr ago, while only reduced by similar to 80% in the central regions. All this observational evidence suggests that NGC4424 is the remnant of an unequal-mass merger that occurred less than or similar to 500 Myr ago when the galaxy was already a member of the Virgo cluster, and is now undergoing a ram pressure stripping event that has removed the gas and quenched the activity of star formation in the outer disc. The tail of ionised gas probably results from the outflow produced by a central starburst fed by the collapse of gas induced by the merging episode. This outflow is sufficiently powerful to overcome the ram pressure induced by the intracluster medium on the disc of the galaxy crossing the cluster. This analysis thus suggests that feedback can participate in the quenching process of galaxies in high-density regions
Galaxy bulges and their massive black holes: a review
With references to both key and oft-forgotten pioneering works, this article
starts by presenting a review into how we came to believe in the existence of
massive black holes at the centres of galaxies. It then presents the historical
development of the near-linear (black hole)-(host spheroid) mass relation,
before explaining why this has recently been dramatically revised. Past
disagreement over the slope of the (black hole)-(velocity dispersion) relation
is also explained, and the discovery of sub-structure within the (black
hole)-(velocity dispersion) diagram is discussed. As the search for the
fundamental connection between massive black holes and their host galaxies
continues, the competing array of additional black hole mass scaling relations
for samples of predominantly inactive galaxies are presented.Comment: Invited (15 Feb. 2014) review article (submitted 16 Nov. 2014). 590
